Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is the first film in the Harry Potter series based off the novels by J.K. Rowling. It is the tale of Harry Potter, an ordinary 11-year-old boy serving as a sort of slave for his aunt and uncle who learns that he is actually a wizard and has been invited to attend the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry is snatched away from his mundane existence by Hagrid, the grounds keeper for Hogwarts, and quickly thrown into a world completely foreign to both him and the viewer. Famous for an incident that happened at his birth, Harry makes friends easily at his new school. He soon finds, however, that the wizarding world is far more dangerous for him than he would have imagined, and he quickly learns that not all wizards are ones to be trusted. Written by Carly

Harry Potter is an average bespectacled 11 year old boy who has lived with the Dursley family ever since his parents died in a car crash. For some reason the family has always mistreated him. On his 11th birthday a giant man named Rubeus Hagrid hands him a letter telling him that he has been accepted as a student at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry learns that his parents were wizards and were killed by an evil wizard Voldemort, a truth that was hidden from him all these years. He embarks for his new life as a student, gathering two good friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger along the way. They soon learn that something very valuable is hidden somewhere inside the school and Voldemort is very anxious to lay his hands on it. Written by Soumitra

Young Harry Potter has to lead a hard life: His parents have died in a car crash when he was still a baby, and he is being brought up by his Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia. For some reason unbeknownst to the bespectacled ten-year-old, the Dursleys let him live in the small chamber under the stairs, and treat him more like vermin than like a family member. His fat cousin Dudley, the Dursley's real son, keeps bothering Harry all the time. On his eleventh birthday, Harry Potter finally receives a mysterious letter from a certain Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, telling him that he is chosen as one of the future students of that supposedly renowned school. Hagrid, the gigantic man who brought the letter, finally introduces Harry into the real circumstances of his life: His parents were a wizard and a witch, they were killed by the evil wizard Voldemort protecting him. Harry still has a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead from that event. Since he survived the attack as a baby, and also somehow deprived Voldemort from his powers, he has been famous in the wizarding world ever since. The Dursleys, strong disbelievers in that magical crap, never told Harry anything about his true self. So, Harry is strongly surprised, yet absolutely happy to start his training. At Hogwarts, Harry meets his teachers, and becomes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The three of them accidentally find out that the potions master, Severus Snape, seems to plot on stealing something that is guarded by a three-headed dog. Since nobody would believe some first years to have found out such important things that even would incriminate a Hogwarts teacher, they take it on themselves to find out what Snape is up to. Their quest for the truth leads across many obstacles, from keeping up the everyday school life, a bewitched Quidditch match (Quidditch is a popular wizard sport), Fluffy, the three-headed monster dog and quite some tasks one has to overcome to get to the guarded object. Harry Potter has spent the first ten years of his life living under the stairs in the house of his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon, who generally dislike him. Then, one day, a giant, named Hagrid, comes to him with an invitation to study at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry soon discovers that there are two worlds: one is the dreary world of the Muggles where he's grown up, and the other is one of magic and fantasy, and it's the latter in which he's destined to live. Written by {Laffz00@aol.com}

On his 11th birthday, young Harry Potter discovers the life he never knew he had, the life of a wizard. In his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he meets his two best friends Ron Weasley, an expert at Wizard Chess, and Hermione Granger, a girl with non-magic parents. Harry learns the game of Quiditch and Wizard Chess on his way to facing a Dark Arts teacher who is bent on destroying him. Written by Shaun Ouimette {xextreemshaun589@hotmail.com}

People are becoming petrified, and no-one knows what is doing it. Harry keeps hearing a voice.. a voice which seems to be coming from within the walls. They are told the story of the Chamber of Secrets. It is said that only Salazar Slytherin's true descendent will be able to open it. Harry, it turns out, is a Parsel-tongue. This means that he is able to speak/understand snakes. Everyone thinks that it's him that has opened the Chamber of Secrets because that is what Slytherin was famous for. Written by Sarah

And, of course, the growing threat of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, who may just be the one planning the attacks. But, could he have an accomplice? Written by tatersaladmercer

"Mudbloods" (people of Muggle families) are "petrified" by an evil monster lurking in the grounds. HERE IS THE IMDB SUMMARY OF HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN

Harry Potter is having a tough time with his relatives (yet again). He runs away after using magic to blow Uncle Vernon's sister Marge who was being offensive towards Harry's parents. Initially scared for using magic outside the school, he is pleasantly surprised that he won't be penalized after all. However, he soon learns that a dangerous criminal and Voldemort's trusted aide Sirius Black has escaped from the Azkaban prison and wants to kill Harry to avenge the Dark Lord. To worsen the conditions for Harry, vile shape-shifters called Dementors are appointed to guard the school gates and inexplicably happen to have the most horrible effect on him. Little does Harry know that by the end of this year, many holes in his past (whatever he knows of it) will be filled up and he will have a clearer vision of what the future has in store... Written by Soumitra

"He's at Hogwarts. He's at Hogwarts." The infamous Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban Prison and all sources believe he's after Harry Potter's life. It's Harry's third year at Hogwart's, but a shadow hangs over the school. A dangerous mass murderer, Sirius Black, has escaped Azkaban Fortress - the Wizards' Prison. While learning to cope with the Dementors sent to protect Hogwart's, Harry learns the disturbing story of Sirius Black and yet more of his own history. Written by Travers Naran

Harry's life is in mortal danger yet again, this time more than ever. First, a killer named Sirus Black has escaped from Azkaban Prison, and it seems that he broke out just to finish what his master wanted to do 13 years ago: kill Harry Potter!. Also, for Harry's protection, Azkaban has sent hundreds of Dementors to guard Hogwarts in an attempt to catch Black. But will they turn out to be a great help or a big mistake? Written by Prince

Approaching his third year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter has had enough of his muggle relatives. He runs away from them (finally) and enters his third term facing trouble from more than one side: for using magic outside the school and from the news that a notorious criminal, serial killer Sirius Black, has escaped the wizard's prison at Azkaban and apparently is headed for Harry. The school calls in supernatural help against Black in the form of Dementors, but unusual things continue to put Harry in peril. He is thrown into a confusing panoply of shifting alliegences and shifting shapes where nobody is who or what they seem. Who is the real criminal? What is the real crime? Who is telling or knows the truth? Written by Anonymous

HERE IS THE IMDB SUMMARY FOR HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE

Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts is about to start and he is enjoying the summer vacation with his friends. They get the tickets to The Quidditch World Cup Final but after the match is over, people dressed like Lord Voldemort's 'Death Eaters' set a fire to all the visitors' tents, coupled with the appearance of Voldemort's symbol, the 'Dark Mark' in the sky, which causes a frenzy across the magical community. That same year, Hogwarts is hosting 'The Triwizard Tournament', a magical tournament between three well-known schools of magic : Hogwarts, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. The contestants have to be above the age of 17, and are chosen by a magical object called Goblet of Fire. On the night of selection, however, the Goblet spews out four names instead of the usual three, with Harry unwittingly being selected as the Fourth Champion. Since the magic cannot be reversed, Harry is forced to go with it and brave three exceedingly difficult tasks. Written by Soumitra

Harry's fourth summer and the following year at Hogwarts are marked by the Quidditch World Cup and the Triwizard Tournament, in which student representatives from three different wizarding schools compete in a series of increasingly challenging contests. However, Voldemort's Death Eaters are gaining strength and even creating the Dark Mark giving evidence that the Dark Lord is ready to rise again. In the unsuspecting lives of the young wizard and witches at Hogwarts the competitors are selected by the goblet of fire, which this year makes a very surprising announcement: Hogwarts will have two representatives in the tournament, including Harry Potter! Will Harry be able to rise to the challenge for the Tri Wizard Tournament while keeping up with school or will the challenges along with Voldemort's rebirth be too much for the young hero? Written by imann

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire takes us deeper into the characters' minds and the darkness of the Wizarding World. At the Quidditch World Cup, Voldemort's followers gather and wreak havoc. Then, at Hogwarts, a legendary event takes place. The Triwizard Tournament! The Goblet of Fire judges who gets in and who doesn't. On the fateful night, three champions are selected. But then the Goblet spits out one other. Harry's. These two major events point to the return of Lord Voldemort. Dumbledore and the other teachers sense it, but it is inevitable. And Harry is no longer safe at Hogwarts. This fourth installment is the most dramatic, and also the scariest. Let me just say that all does not necessarily end well... Written by Josh Millhouse

Another strong summer stanza on the international circuit saw a reshuffle at the top during the weekend, when "Transformers" emerged as the new No. 1 title with an estimated $43.6 million gross from 3,503 screens in 29 territories.
Although not as muscular overall as the previous weekend's exceptionally strong showing -- when a half-dozen titles grossed more than $10 million, compared with three this stanza -- the weekend's action reinforced the view that summer 2007 remains sizzling overseas for the major U.S. studios. Sony Pictures Releasing International said Sunday that the international boxoffice for its films this year passed the $1 billion mark faster than ever before in the distributor's history, making Sony the first studio to reach that milestone in 2007. Sony's previous international record was set last year on Aug. 24. (By the end of 2006, Sony generated $1.634 billion overseas, its biggest year to date.) The biggest of Sony's titles overseas so far this year are "Ghost Rider" ($103.9 million gross), "The Pursuit of Happyness" ($120.1 million), "Casino Royale" (which grossed $87.9 million of its $428 million total in 2007) and, of course, "Spider-Man 3" ($549.4 million, $215 million more than its domestic gross). "Transformers," the sci-fi/action film directed by Michael Bay and based on the popular toy line and animated TV series, broadened its international rollout in its second weekend by opening in 19 new territories, finishing No. 1 in Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland and Turkey. The DreamWorks/Paramount Pictures International release has an international gross of $93.6 million; it has grossed $246.1 million worldwide. $8.3 million from 394 screens), followed by Spain ($5.2 million from 706 sites) and the Netherlands ($1.4 million from 111 situations). The title also remained No. 1 in Australia ($3.8 million from 231 screens for a cume of $13.5 million) and in New Zealand ($1 million from 63 sites for a cume of $3 million). Finishing second for the weekend is 20th Century Fox International's "Die Hard 4" (aka "Live Free or Die Hard"), which grossed an estimated $41.4 million from 6,773 screens in 49 territories. A big boost came from the Bruce Willis action sequel's bow in four of the top 15 world markets: the U.K. ($9.8 million from 463 screens), France ($6.9 million from 749 sites), Mexico ($2.8 million from 802 situations) and Belgium ($1 million from 98 screens). "Die Hard 4's" international total is $84.3 million; its worldwide cume is $168.5 million. "Shrek the Third," which had been on top internationally for the previous three weekends, placed No. 3 overall with an estimated gross of $33.5 million from 6,114 locations in 53 markets, lifting its overseas total to $322 million. The DreamWorks/PPI film remained No. 1 in the U.K. ($10.2 million from 444 screens for a cume of $50.1 million) and also performed strongly in France and Germany. Buena Vista International's release of Pixar/Disney's "Ratatouille" finished fourth during the weekend with an estimated $9.3 million from 1,835 screens in a dozen markets. Its overseas cume stands at $17.6 million ($127.1 million worldwide). "Ratatouille," starring Patton Oswalt as the voice of Remy, the animated French rat, opened in six new territories, grabbing the No. 1 spots in each. The best was Mexico, with an estimated $4.2 million from 750 screens, more than the No. 2-No. 4 film grosses combined. It was the second-biggest market opening ever for a Pixar title. In Brazil, the opening tally was $1.3 million from 300 screens. Warner Bros. International's "Ocean's Thirteen" is No. 5 overall for the weekend with an estimated $9.215 million from about 4,930 screens in 55 markets. The overseas gross for the star-laden crime caper stands at $139.6 million. Its biggest holdover market remains the U.K., where the territorial cume is $24.5 million. BVI's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" continued in durable fashion in its seventh weekend internationally, grossing an estimated $8.1 million from 6,597 screens in 51 markets. RECAP ON WRESTLERS ON LARRY KING LIVE TALKING ABOUT BENOIT

HERE IS A RECAP OF LAST NIGHTS EPISODE OF LARRY KING WITH WRESTLERS TALKING ABOUT THE MURDER SUICIDE OF FORMER WWE WRESTLER CHRIS BENOIT AND FAMILY.

HERE IS THE ARTICLE FROM LARRY KING LIVE AND IT CAME FROM WRESTLEZONE.COM

Larry King Live focused completely on the Chris Benoit tragedy and the pro-wrestling industry tonight. John Cena and Chris Jericho were live in-studio guests while Bret Hart was a guest via satellite.
-
- They talked about why Chris Benoit would do this type of thing. Jericho talked about how Benoit had a "heart of gold" and said that people described him as a "man's man" and continued to express his shock and confusion over why Benoit would do it. Bret Hart said that he heard about the incident from Carl DeMarco who heads WWE Canada. He also talked about how he was shocked at the incident, stating that Benoit was cool, calm, and relaxed and said Benoit would be one of the last guys in the world he'd expect this from.

- Larry asked Bret if he knew anything about Benoit's relationship with his wife and son. Bret said he didn't and that he hadn't been too in touch with Benoit since he retired from wrestling back in 2000. Bret again said that Benoit was a leader and was very loved by everybody.

- John Cena backed up what Bret Hart said. He called Benoit a big brother and a mentor and one of the best wrestlers in the industry.

- Jericho called Benoit the Michael Jordan of wrestling and credited Benoit with changing the style of American wrestling in many ways.

- Jericho said that Benoit idolized Daniel and his other kids and that he talked about them all the time. He even said that if he needed to leave his kids with someone, he'd leave them with Benoit and that's why all of this is so shocking.

- Larry asked about Daniel's mental status. Jericho said that he heard about Daniel having Fragile X right after the tragedy and said that the symptoms of the disease did fit Daniel but that he wasn't sure if the Fragile X stuff was true or if Daniel was just shy like his dad.

- They ran a clip which mentioned how wrestlers are so much more likely to due than football players.

- Larry King mentioned how wrestlers are tremendous athletes even though it's all a show. Jericho said that people may not understand how hard it is to be a wrestler.

- Larry asked for details on how wrestling works. Jericho called it "show business with an athletic edge."

- Cena said it's an athletic form of entertainment.

- The topic shifted to steroids. Larry played a clip from when Hulk Hogan was on the show in 2000. Hogan said that steroids and drugs do exist in wrestling and that drugs are available and guys often need them to deal with the pain of the business.

- Larry asked Bret if he thinks drugs and steroids have anything to do with the Benoit situation. Bret said that until someone can prove that was the case, he won't point the finger to steroids. He said that WWE has a drug test in place and that Benoit passed. Bret seemed to downplay the role of steroids, saying most of the guns may be on growth hormone.

- Cena said that there is no proven knowledge of wrestlers lashing out due to steroids. He said that Benoit's actions took place over a weekend and that it wasn't a roid rage case. Cena blamed the media and said that it's not right to blame WWE for this.

- Jericho said that steroids are not like PCP. You don't get rage the second after you take them. He then brought up how caffeine addiction can also lead to all kinds of mental changes and that nobody would believe caffeine could cause rage or this type of incident even though the symptoms indicate that they could.

- A clip was played of Konnan talking about wrestlers needing drugs, Lex Luger talking about the deaths in wrestling, and Bruno Sammartino talking about drugs and deaths.

- Ted Dibiase and Steve Blackman both joined the show.

- Dibiase called the Benoit tragedy "baffling" and a "stand up guy." He said that everybody respected Benoit and that Benoit often went home to visit his family even when it made his traveling much more difficult and longer.

- Blackman also painted Benoit as a positive light. Larry asked for a negative about Benoit and Blackman didn't have any.

- Jericho said his only negative might have been that he was quiet and that if he didn't want to talk, he wouldn't.

- Dibiase said that Benoit might have had a moment of rage where he killed his wife and that his state of mind may have led to Daniel's killing being a mercy killing.

- Blackman said that Benoit had a great relationship with Daniel and his entire family.

- Larry read an email asking if WWE provides counseling services for its talent.

- Bret said they didn't when he was there.

- Cena said that they do and that throughout this Benoit tragedy, they have had grief counselors coming in to help the talent.

- Cena mentioned how WWE canceled the live RAW show following the Benoit death out of respect to the feelings of the talent.

- They briefly discussed the funeral plans for Nancy and Daniel.

- Larry asked if Benoit ever said anything about problems with Nancy or Daniel.

- Jericho said that it was all normal stuff and that Benoit had loved his wife.

- Jericho said how Benoit would always go for the Make A Wish Foundation and that Benoit would put so much time into helping disabled children.

- Dibiase said that he had seen Benoit treating children and fans very well, more so than most.

- A clip was shown of CM Punk calling Benoit his hero, Steve Austin saying Benoit always gave 120%, John Cena saying he lived for the business, and Stephanie McMahon saying he was passionate for wrestling and for his family.

- The topic turned to Dr. Phil Astin.

- Dr. Astin's lawyer came on and said that the entire case has been blown out of proportion and there is no proof that Astin did anything wrong in relating to Chris Benoit. He emphasized that there is no link between Astin and Benoit.

- Larry asked the wrestlers if this story will go anywhere in relation to steroids.

- Blackman said that this story is bigger than most but that he has never seen anything like roid rage.

- Cena said that this is a case of the media wanting to blame something.

- Jericho backed up what Cena said.

- Dibiase said that the wrestlers who died young died from drugs and alcohol, not steroids.

- Larry read an email asking if WWE promoted big guys more than small guys.

- Cena said that WWE is bias to entertainers and if you can entertain, you will get a chance.

- Jericho said that he was a small man in a big man's business. He said he used his brains and charisma to be successful.

- Larry asked Bret if he soured on wrestling after Owen Hart died. Bret said he did in many ways but that he is still connected to wrestling and cares about the people in it. Bret described wrestling as figure skating because it took two wrestlers working together to make each other. Bret talked about the professional code of wrestling.

- Blackman said that fans know that wrestling is entertainment and a show.

- Jericho said that fans get lost in wrestling just like they do in Die Hard. He also expanded on Bret's figure skating analogy, saying it's two entertainers putting on a show.

- Dibiase said you make it as real as possible for the fans, even though they know it's not real.

- Larry pointed out how Blackman's wrestling name was "The Lethal Weapon."

- A clip was shown of the DEA raiding Dr. Phil Astin's office.

- A caller asked what the wrestlers as role models have to say right now.

- Bret said to watch John Cena.

- Jericho said that wrestlers put smiles on the faces of millions each week. He said that it's like blaming pro-football players during the OJ Simpson situation.

- Scott Ballard, Fatette County District Attorney, came on and said that it still looks like a double murder-suicide and that they are now waiting for the toxicology report. Ballard said that it will probably always remain a perplexing case, saying how can anyone ever explain how someone can kill a 7 year old boy. Ballard said that all indications showed that Daniel idolized his dad. Ballard said the toxicology report won't give us a final word on what happened and that the report may not be out for a few more weeks or longer.

- Cena again said that we'll never really know what happened.

- Jericho compared the situation to the Andrea Yates murders, saying that Benoit must have had serious mental issues to do this, but we'll never know.

- Dibiase said that the Benoit they all knew would never have done this in his RIGHT mind, so something must have gone wrong mentally.

- A clip showing various Benoit highlights was shown.

- WWE attorney Jerry McDevitt joined the show. McDevitt said that the wrestlers have indicated what kind of person Benoit was and what kind of organization WWE is. He called what WWE is doing "remarkable," mentioning WWE's drug testing.

- An emailer asked when wrestlers will get a union.

- Cena said that wrestlers know what they are getting into and nobody is forced into it. Cena said that he loves wrestling.

- Blackman said the pay in wrestling is what you make of it.

- Jericho said Benoit must have made between $500,000 to $1,000,000 a year and when he was champion, he must have been making seven figures for sure.

- A caller asked if WWE should consider psychiatric evaluations of wrestlers.

- Dibiase said that wrestlers know what they are getting into, comparing it to joining the army. He said he knew the hardships of wrestling. He said that maybe in certain situations they should do psychiatric evaluations.

- An emailer asked if the wrestlers would want their kids getting into wrestling.

- Jericho said that if his son's dream was to be a wrestler, he would.

- Dibiase said his son is already in the business and that the industry has changed so much. Dibiase said that twenty years ago, wrestlers lived a rock star lifestyle but now it's all much more under control.

- Larry asked how Vince McMahon is taking this. McDevitt said it is hard on him.

- More Benoit highlights were shown.

- McDevitt confirmed that Benoit tested clean for all drugs in April.

- McDevitt said that WWE's drug testing is random.

- Bret Hart said that wrestlers need a union. He even said that the janitor cleaning the WWE building probably have more benefits than WWE wrestlers. He said that after wrestlers retire, they have nothing. He said wrestlers have no protection and no benefits.

- McDevitt said that unions have not solved the drug problems in baseball.

- An emailer asked if Benoit will ever go into the WWE Hall of Fame.

- Blackman said that he thinks the tragedy will overshadow his career.

- Jericho said that tragedy will overshadow Benoit's career.

- Larry thanked his guests.

HDTV IS GOING TO START GETTING MORE CHANNELS IN SEPTEMBER

HDTV: Showdown in September
DIRECTV's plan to expand its high-def lineup will trigger more channels from cable operators.
By Phillip Swann
Washington, D.C. (July 10, 2007) -- DIRECTV plans to add dozens of High-Definition channels starting this September with the goal of reaching 100 by year's end.

Despite the prevailing wisdom, the cable TV industry will be ready with a response. Cable TV operators have been quietly taking steps to create more bandwidth to expand their high-def lineups in the third and fourth quarters of this year as well.

In some cases, cable services are eliminating analog channels to make room; in others, they are installing a new technology called Switched Digital Video that adds system space. And some cable operators such as Comcast and Time Warner are doing both.

Bottom line: You can expect the major cable TV operators to double their current high-def lineups by year's end, perhaps offering as many as 50 channels. Cablevision is already providing 40 HD channels with the recent addition of the 15-channel Voom lineup.

While the cable operators won't offer the exact number of HD channels as DIRECTV, they will be able to soften the blow of the satcaster's high-def expansion.

So come September, look for DIRECTV and the cable operators to begin a new battle over who offers the most HDTV channels.

In advertisements and TV commercials, the satcaster will point to the exact number of high-def channels it offers while the cable operators will say they have the most "quality" HD networks.

The design will be to convince high-def owners that each one has the strongest HDTV programming lineup. Cable operators will try to buttress their claim by alleging that their HD picture quality is better than satellite.

And the September showdown will be just the beginning. We're in for a long fight over high-def issues as both industries develop new ways to please the HD viewer.

And look for EchoStar to join in at year's end with its own marketing campaign to promote the launch of new HD-designated satellites next year.

THE HILLS HAVE EYES 1 NOW AVAILABLE

THIS MOVIE IS A GREAT HORROR MOVIE. IT IS A GOOD QUALITY VERSION I THINK. I HOPE YOU GUYS LIKE THESE MOVIES.

HERE IS IMDB'S SUMMARY OF THE HILLS HAVE EYES 1

While traveling in a trailer to California through the New Mexico Desert, a family is misled to a shortcut going to nowhere by the owner of an isolated gas station and wrecks the car in a rock. Along the night and on the next day, they are attacked by a group of deformed cannibals, fruit of the atmospheric nuclear tests conducted by USA from 1945 to 1962 in that spot. Absolutely trapped by the psychotics, they have to fight to survive. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Wes Craven produces this remake of his 1977 classic of the same name, about the Carters, an idyllic American family travelling through the great American southwest. But their trip takes a detour into an area closed off from the public, but more importantly from society. An area originally used by the U.S. Government for nuclear testing that was intended to be empty...or so they thought? When the Carter's car breaks down at the old site, they're stranded...or are they? As the Carters may soon realize that what seemed like a car casually breaking down, might actually be a trap. This trap might be perpetrated by the inhabitants of the site who aren't pulling a prank, but are out to set up a gruesome massacre. Written by mystic80

HERE IS DVDTALKS REVIEW OF THE HILLS HAVE EYES 1

Savant has reviewed two Wes Craven horror efforts, the intense but ragged Last House on the Left and one of his later, slick films The Serpent and the Rainbow. Craven developed into a fine director, shepherding two major horror franchises in the Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream series and eventually scoring a mainstream success with a Meryl Streep movie about a dedicated music teacher.

The Hills Have Eyes is his second outing from the middle seventies, yet another of those pioneering efforts from a core of ambitious young filmmakers. This group ran themselves ragged in the Mojave Desert for a few weeks to tell a horror tale that combines the savage carnage of Last House with some more original elements. The defending-the-family revenge saga of Straw Dogs plays a hand, as does the struggle with inbred subhumans in Deliverance. Ex college teacher Craven founded his tale of terror on a true incident from Scottish history, and adds a few mythical touches of his own. Nowhere near as bleak as Last House, Hills finds transgressive themes of its own to exploit for its effective, raw shock scenes.

Synopsis:

En route to California, the Carter family cruises the desert backroads. Disabled by an accident, they fall prey to Jupiter (James Whitworth), a crazed savage and paterfamilias to a clan of inbred cannibals who slaughter and rob passersby to survive. Using one victim to trick the rest, the savages seem intent on wiping the Carters out as horribly as possible, raping the daughter (Susan Lanier) and stealing another daughter's baby. How long can the surviving Carters stay alive?

Savant didn't see many of the new breed of horror films of the 1970s when they were new, but remembers a very scary afternoon in an East L.A. theater watching this notable shocker. It succeeds by being reasonably intelligent and logical; its far-fetched situation becomes credible in its sheer immediacy - when subhuman savages are slaughtering your family, there's no time to contemplate Why and How.

Craven's script quickly puts the Carters into a believable jam, their only sin being to wander 'off the main highway' where maniacs have awaited victims since horror movies were invented. 'Big Bob' Dad (Russ Grieve) is no fool but a police detective from a rough town, and not one to be frightened by the incoherent warnings of old Fred (John Steadman), a gas station guy and estranged father to the monster family in the hills. Through no fault of their own, the Carters are put through a gauntlet of blood and horror.

This is a family thrown into a meat-grinder situation they've never had to even contemplate. Big Bob's pleasant but thoroughly complacent wife Ethel (Virginia Vincent) is caught completely out of her depth. Her feeble reaction to the brutality leveled at her family is uncomprehending denial. The rest of the family fall prey to bad communication and judgment under the clan's first attack. Dad and son-in-law Doug Wood (Martin Speer) go for help leaving the trailer protected only by son Bobby (Robert Houston). He learns there must be something terrible in the hills around their wrecked car and trailer, but tells nobody. Thus the family is thrown into chaos - two members killed horribly, one mortally wounded. Daughter Susan (Lanier) goes into one of those useless catatonic states favored by horror movies after the groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead of a decade earlier.

The few left alive and functioning must formulate a plan even with their food and ammunition mostly gone. They only have one wild card in their favor - their German shepherd dog named Beast. Just as it looks hopeless, the Beast leads a counterattack and the audience jumps its feet rooting for the underdog defenders. Sensing that nobody would accept the totally downbeat, grinding death gargles of Last House on the Left, Craven wisely allows the Carters a fighting chance. It's a Grand Guignol horrorshow unhindered by the intellectual and literary baggage of the Sam Peckinpah and John Boorman siege movies.

As proven in hundreds of inept straight-to-video productions, anybody can make this kind of movie. Craven and his producer Locke didn't have that many models to fall back on and their story relies on some desperate booby traps more likely than not inspired by the improvised killing of the shark in Jaws. But the characters always seem right, even when they're not well-acted. Craven puts us in shock by eliminating his most interesting characters first, in traumatic they're-not-coming-back ways. The kids and son-in-law left to fight don't communicate worth beans, and would seem to have little more than youthful strength on their side. But the brother and sister find the ruthlessness needed to prevail, and the son-in-law has luck and some unexpected help on his side.

The feral family of cannibals have long since been eclipsed in subsequent gross 'n' nasty movies, but in 1977 they set us back a step or two. Papa Jupiter has a horrible split face from his childhood, and has made himself a family by kidnapping prostitutes and raising three strong sons, named after planets. Pluto is portrayed by horror icon Michael Berryman, a good actor using his congenital deformation to play a monster. Berryman's domed skull and protruding brow became the iconic image from the movie.

Jupiter's cannibal clan is given an expert origin story, but it doesn't make sense until one contemplates the ambitions of Charlie Manson to found a functionally similar ranch cult out in Death Valley. The predatory clan lends Hills a formal structure: savage brute cannibals versus unsuspecting middle Americans.

Craven's storytelling also alludes to fairy-tale forms. The twin dogs Beauty and Beast figure largely in the defense. Not only does Beast attack with Lassie-like intelligence, but he becomes a spectral devil-dog in Pluto's imagination, when the inbred giant thinks that the second dog is the ghost of the former.

The second reference helps temper the horror of the kidnapping of the Carter's grandchild, a baby. The Jupiter clan intend to feast on the child, but it is rescued by a provident combination of protectors, with a pig momentarily used as a substitute. This alludes both to Alice in Wonderland and earlier terror-fairy tales about gypsies or trolls stealing infants and replacing them with suckling pigs. Wes Craven shows his English Lit background here just as he did in his cribbing of the myth behind Bergman's The Virgin Spring for Last House. Always looking for high-toned reasons to champion otherwise uncredentialed horror films, film critics eat up on literary references: a crude gut-ripper can become a 'Dark Statement of Our Times.'

Anchor Bay's special edition of The Hills Have Eyes has a good enhanced transfer that is as sharp and grain free as the original (16mm?) photography allows it to be.1 The audio comes in both 5.1 and DTS, in classy remixes that will thrill fans that only remember Vanguard's mangy release prints.

The collateral extras are an impressive mix. Along with the expected still and poster galleries, trailer and TV spots are an audio commentary with producer Locke and director Craven. An alternate ending re-orders the final scenes and tacks on an unnecessary group hug finish. The final ending is much better, although I'll bet the actors would have preferred retaining the alternate's cast reprise.

The two disc set's big plus is an excellent in-house docu that brings in five actors, the director and producer to tell the tale of their overachieving horror tale. Craven is his unprepossessing self as he explains that on his second film he still barely knew what he was doing. The others convincingly contradict him in the directing department. Cameraman Eric Saarinen explains the commercial triangle of 'fast, good and cheap': a producer can have two but never three. Delightful actress Dee Wallace of The Howling and E.T. openly admits that it was her first professional gig, and along with her fellow players Lanier, Houston and Berryman amplifies the producer's observation that the whole show was a grueling labor of love by beginners who wanted desperately to be in the business. Some of them did continue. Saarinen became a regular cameraman for Albert Brooks. Wallace spent most of her time in the horror film trenches, but got her bid for immortality playing opposite a pasty alien with baby-doll eyes.

The lengthy docu covers all bases with a sense of perspective and good humor; none of these people think The Hills Have Eyes is Shakespeare, but they are rightfully proud of it as a ripping good horror show.

The other docu is a pretty basic AFI 'directors series' profile of Wes Craven, that sees him from the viewpoint of a dozen of his fawning actors. The AFI series has a standard approach of treating every director as if he were John Ford. This distorts Craven in a way that the other doc does not - Craven is an interesting director, not one that merits any particular mantle of greatness. He's a maker of effective shockers who raised himself out of the Tobe Hooper neighborhood by virtue of some smash commercial hits.

The Hills Have Eyes worked in 1977 because it exploited cruder fears and emotions than normally shown in entertainment features. It works up a bloodlust through the manipulation of events over which we can't help but have extreme emotions - key family members slaughtered, a baby stolen to be eaten. I'm sure there were audiences that reacted strongly to a dog and a canary being killed, too. It's effective and impressive and creatively miles ahead of most of its competition, but even as Grand Guignol Hills has its limitations. The Carter family only becomes sympathetic after they start being killed off; they're really cyphers for our own self-defense mechanisms. The slaughter is the content here, and judging by Craven's later work, he tried hard to move into more creatively rewarding themes.

HERE IS ANOTHER REVIEW OF THE MOVIE FROM DVDTALK.COM
The Product:
They have often been described as the future of entertainment, a way of having the interactive concept inherent to games mixed with the cinematic elements of film. Titles like Silent Hill, Resident Evil and Devil May Cry have all pushed the boundaries of strategy and scares, combining the best aspects of movies with the interesting aspects of first person participation. Indeed, modern gaming allows people to feel like they're part of the storyline, subjected to the same horrors happening onscreen. So it was no surprise when Hollywood came looking to adapt titles into full fledged motion picture presentations. With a built in audience and most of the filmic basics (plot, characters) taken care of, they seem like an easy entertainment well to draw from. Perhaps this is why 2006's Stay Alive is so slight. Without an established game to pull from, and a rather routine view of what makes something scary, we end up with the antithesis of the entire video game/film ideal a movie that fails to live up to the expectations of either medium.

The Plot:
When best bud Loomis and a few of his friends die after playing an underground video game called Stay Alive, law intern Hutch is really rattled. Inseparable since a young age and a tragic family accident Hutch shared his love of gaming with his recently deceased pal. When the rest of his interpersonal entourage caf owners October and her brother Phineas, talented tech head Swink, Hutch's boss Miller and newcomer to the group, Abigail want to play the supposedly fatalistic title, our hero is intrigued. He's curious to discover what Loomis was up to before his death. Unfortunately, after a night of shooting and strategy, another member of the clique winds up dead. Soon, it seems anyone who dies during the game ends up meeting a similar fate in real life. As his companions are killed off, one by one, Hutch tries to decipher the mystery of the game's origin, and the local legend surrounding its storyline. But more importantly, as a player of the seemingly haunted title, Hutch must do whatever he can to help everyone Stay Alive even if that includes facing off against an ancient terror with blood on its mind.

The DVD:
While it is not the worst horror movie ever made, Stay Alive is surely one of the most derivative. Granted, it tries to use the jargon and insider slant to bring the underground ethos of gaming to the mainstream, yet it is really nothing more than a standard "fantasy becomes reality" fright flick. It offers nothing but the most transparent characterization, pedestrian plotting, and kills that occur in the shadows, or mainly offscreen. For fans of the genre, there have been better (Silent Hill) and worse (House of the Dead) game-inspired efforts, but Stay Alive wants to be the first that turns the mocked up console and fully rendered graphics into significant story points. The only problem is, the concept is as old as Atari. Back in 1983, Emilio Estevez fought off a series of Space-Invaders like entities in the "Bishop of Battle" sequence from the otherwise ordinary omnibus scary movie Nightmares. So porting us into the post-millennial, photo realistic era to manufacture macabre is like just teaching an old dog a new, not so novel trick. Yet even with all its new fangled bells and whistles, Stay Alive can't overcome its derivative elements to be anything other than dull.

Part of the problem here is, of course, the demographically designed cast. Since the average video game enthusiast is older than one might expect, director William Brent Bell has hired actors from that most substantively suspect group the below thirty generic generation. This is not to say that the performances here are bad, they just suffer from a shallowness derived from their addled age bracket. No matter how hard he tries, Frankie Muniz (as uber dork Swink) can't be anything other than an arrested adolescent. Similarly, Goth Gal October (played by the interesting Sophia Bush) seems shipped in from an alternative rock video. Our main hero Hutch is ill-defined and bland, while his suddenly significant gal pal Abigail gets none of the necessary backstory we need to keep her from being a big fat red herring. With such a muddled motley crew, it is hard to get a handle on whom to root for. And since we know the narrative is going to reduce their number by one or two every few minutes, the need to connect is severely undermined. The result is a mechanical byproduct that can't deliver the requisite thrills or the genre chills. Instead, Stay Alive relies on its varying visuals (some good, most average) and the novelty of new technology to try and get by.

Sadly, it's a hard sell. The game at the center of the story borrows heavily from Fatal Frame, and if you're not familiar with the whole role playing, first person shooter, survival horror ideal, you may be less than intrigued by this aspect of the narrative. Also, Stay Alive seems to change strategies halfway through, arguing that players have to die in the game in order to be killed in real life, and then hedging on that prerequisite to push along the plot. Then there is the whole subplot involving James Haven. He is supposedly the inventor of the game, or merely beta-testing it (it is never made clear) and while Haven makes for a creepy character, the truth is he is similar to Abigail in his ability to steer us from the truth. We don't know why he's important to the story, just that he is, and as a result, we are left with several unanswered questions that never get resolved. Indeed, a good way to describe Stay Alive is as a movie that has far too many gaping plot and logic holes to hold our interest or get under our skin. Instead of being frightened, one is frazzled by all the confusing coincidences and lackadaisical logistics. Even with its goofy gamers insights, this is still a stagnant excuse for scares.

The Video:
Highly touted as the "Unrated Director's Cut" of the film, Stay Alive looks a little shoddy in this new revamped version. Video game scenes excised from the theatrical print because they weren't completely finished or lacked any narrative value are reinserted, and elements from the third act of the film (the budding romance between Hutch and Abigail) are taken in a decidedly different direction. Also included are more of Jimmi "Phineas" Simpson's annoying sexual slang, greater drug references, some bonus interaction between the gaming buddies, and an additional amount be it ever so minimal of nudity and gore. The result is the inclusion of 15 minutes of material, extending the film's running time from 85 to 100 minutes. Sadly, this makes the 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen image look choppy and inconsistent. Obvious inserts do not match for clarity and color, while the underdone game effects look a little too homemade, even for a low budget Hollywood horror film. This is a clear case of trading content for technical polish.

The Audio:
Aside from the reverberating sound used as a thematic cue throughout the film, Stay Alive doesn't provide a very compelling Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound mix. When "inside" the game, we get a little of the claustrophobic atmosphere we expect from such scenarios, but in reality, the overall presentation is flat and fairly innocuous. Your subwoofer will get quite the workout every time the character's controls start vibrating, and there is a nice metallic quality to the frequently overdone "slicing knives" sound effect, but in general, this is not a reference quality aural experience.

The Extras:
The added features here, while interesting, offer nothing really important in the way of context or clarity. First up, director Bell and co-writer/producer Matthew Peterman deliver a self-effacing audio commentary that dishes the dirt while it simultaneously supports the duo's efforts. While they keep the backslapping down to a minimum, they really do believe this is an excellent combination of gaming and horror. They are very good about pointing out where the director's cut differs from the original release, and just can't get enough of Jimmi Simpson's curse-laden lunacy. Some of the casting anecdotes are entertaining, and the general discussion is eager and genial. Still, if you're looking for a cutting dissection of where this films succeeds, and fails, you won't find such sentiments here. As for the rest of the extras, there is a two minute highlight reel for the CGI and physical effects work, as well as a strange opening menu option where, in pure gaming style, you can pick a character, their clothing, and a weapon. After creating your 'player' you enter 'the game' to see the results. Usually, it's a film clip highlighting one of the narrative's deaths. If there is a 'winning' move, this critic didn't bother looking for it.

Final Thoughts:
Depending on your idea of a good time at the movies, Stay Alive will either be an awful outrage or a decent b-movie diversion. A few will dig its glimpses of Gothic horror, while others will feel a kinship with the kids at the center of the story. Still, to rank it anywhere above a Rent It would acknowledge entertainment aspects that are just not there. While never completely boring, this film is just not that compelling either. As a result, it really deserves a Skip It. You will not be missing anything if you avoid this crappy Commodore 64 experience, and if you just have to see every game-inspired title that comes into the market, you have been sufficiently warned. As the next generation of console creations pushes the boundaries of interactivity and invention, there may yet be a good combination of film and fear in the offing. But Stay Alive is definitely not it. Instead, it's a loose excuse to claim technology and terror in the same scenario. In the end, it gives both ideals a bad name.

PRE E3 WWE SMACKDOWN VS RAW 2008 PREVIEW FROM IGN AND JEREMY DURHAM

Pre-E3 2007: SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 Hands-on
Slams, Jams, and Wam-Bams in high-def.

July 9, 2007 - We paid a visit to THQ's Southern California headquarters last week to see the E3 build of the company's star pinup, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008. Guiding us along was the newly promoted Creative Manager Bryan Williams and his boss, the Senior Creative Manager (and familiar face to the IGN faithful) Cory Ledesma.

"This year it's all about playing like your favorite superstar," commented Williams. "Fighting styles and character-specific moves are what we really want to stress and that's a big deal for us. We have new strategies that haven't been in the game before and cool match-specific advantages based on style."

Bryan isn't kidding. When we selected the freshly-announced ECW legend Sandman and put him up against the smirk master Randy Orton, we could see the advantages of being a "Hardcore" wrestler in an ECW Extreme Rules match. Sandman's proficiency with weapons helped us own Orton all over the squared circle, while putting chairs on our opponent's neck or pulling off conchairtos added a little extra oomph.

As wrestling fans might expect, the Extreme Rules match is a heck of a lot of fun. Before a bout, users can select which weapons they want to bring with them as part of their setup menu, but that doesn't mean that they'll just appear randomly. Now when you reach under the ring, you can choose one of your items from an analog-controlled wheel; there's no randomization anymore. Even better is that there are new weapons joining old favorites; namely barbed-wired boards and breakable guitars. Expect nine weapon types in all.

Another new touch this year is the ability to interact with fans on all four sides of the ring. But grabbing signs or taking weapons isn't all you can do with them; they can also grab and interact with championship belts or the superstars themselves -- they can even your wrestler on the back or hold an opponent for you so that you can get in a couple of cheap shots.

Perhaps the more important fix, though, is found with the gameplay itself. Yuke's has made a number of mechanical tweaks for fluid action. The ability to run, for example, has been moved off of the buttons completely and is now performed by holding a shoulder button in conjunction with the left analog stick. Exiting the ring and jumping over the apron have been moved to a single button push as well.

"We wanted first-time players to be able to do what they want without having to learn a number of complicated maneuvers," remarked Ledesma. "In the past, we had something like three different buttons you had to push to dive out of the ring on top of somebody; that's hard for beginners. Now, if you want to jump onto your opponent just hit 'Square'' (or X on 360) and you can."

After playing with the new controls ourselves we can attest that the single-button system keeps the matches fluid and fast-paced. It also helps that the new submission system is analog-based as well. How much pressure you apply and how quickly you pump your arms around someone's neck is now entirely up to you -- as is your defense to it, as escaping a grapple is handled with the analog sticks as well. All in all, it's definitely an improvement over last year's edition.

Other new additions worth mentioning include a revamped finishing system that a gives you the option of storing a finisher for use as a style-specific finisher later on. So if, for example, you have a stored finisher with a brawler, when you activate it you'll throw a number of irreversible strikes -- or if you mount a dude on the mat, you can use UFC-style ground and pound punches and head-butts. There are a bunch of style-specific moves like those mentioned above for other classes too. Showmen can steal an opponent's taunt at any time to increase his momentum, for instance, and is the only class that can perform turnbuckle taunts for himself. Technical guys can reverse any strong grapple as long as they haven't suffered from any limb-specific damage, while high flyers can use quick little evasive rolls to avoid bigger opponents. The whole system works pretty well and to help keep things even for everyone, THQ has even added the option of throwing strikes, even when you're the one caught in a grapple.

One of our favorite new improvements is the streamlining that's been done to the menus and match selections. Examples include a "Quick Play" option that will take you into a random match type with random wrestlers via the push of a button (similar to what's found in sports games), while the "Choose Manager" and "Choose Title Bout" option has been removed completely. But don't panic about those last two just yet -- the ability to have a manager escort you down the aisle (they come out with you during your entrances now, by the way) or defend a belt is still in there -- now they're just options to choose as part of the match selection process; the days of going into a separate menu for everything are long gone.

Of course, the expected visual enhancements have been made to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions to boot. Crowds look a lot better thanks to depth of field effects, new lighting effects, better 3D and redone faces. Entrances look great too, with a large helping of them having been redone with new mo-cap and other effects (Cena salutes as he comes down to the ring, Sandman bashes his head in with a beer as he moves through the crowd, etc), and hair looks much more realistic. Mo-cap touches the moves themselves too -- Undertaker has a new tombstone (finally), Orton has a redone RKO, and a number of general moves have benefited from the same treatment (scissor kicks, ref arguments, win poses, etc).

THQ has also confirmed that the last-gen versions of SmackDown will be pretty much identical to the PS3 and Xbox 360 version; but system-specific differences are a possibility according to the team (though not confirmed, they were dodgy on that one). At the very least, PS3 fans can rest easy as both the Xbox and PlayStation SKUs are being developed simultaneously -- unlike last year when the PS3 version was so severely behind eventually leading to its cancellation.

As for the rest of SmackDown, THQ isn't showing us yet. Most of the roster is still being shrouded in secret and the create modes are being held back for another day. We did learn that there will be a new interface in these modes, however, and there are some more announcements expected in the coming months (such as the completely new soundtrack),

How will it all turn out? The world is watching...

When the evil Trade Federation plots to take over the peaceful planet of Naboo, Jedi warrior Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi embark on an amazing adventure to save the planet. With them on their journey is the young queen Amidala, Gungan outcast JarJar Binks, and the powerful Captain Panaka, who will all travel to the faraway planets of Tatooine and Coruscant in a futile attempt to save their world from Darth Sidious, leader of the Trade Federation, and Darth Maul, the strongest Dark Lord of the Sith to ever wield a lightsaber. Written by Anchorhead {skywalker@n2space.com}

As imminent conflict brews between the powerful Trade Federation and the peaceful planet of Naboo, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi travel to Naboo to warn the Queen of the galactic fallout which is to follow. Eventually, Naboo is invaded forcing the Jedis to evacuate the planet with the Queen and her court. They travel to the desert planet of Tatooine where they meet a slave boy called Anakin Skywalker who is evidently one with the Force. They enlist his help in fighting the war, while the Jedis confront one of the Dark Jedis behind the invasion, Darth Maul, while his master Darth Sidious continues to lead the invasion as a "phantom" behind the scenes. It is a distant galaxy eons before the gestation of the planet Earth. Advancements in technology and science have allowed the evolution of millions of worlds that are otherwise in many respects still primitive. These worlds are somewhat loosely allied into an intergalactic Republic, whose capital world is the planet Coruscant, a planetary city. Upholding order for the Republic are the Jedi, an order of warriors endowed with near-super power derived from self-generated fields of energy known collectively as The Force. Within the Republic, dissident worlds have banded into an alliance known as the Trade Federation, and the Trade Federation is locked in a dispute with the peaceful world of Naboo. Two Jedi knights, Qui-Gon Jinn and his youthful apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, have been sent to Naboo to help mediate an end to the dispute, but Nute Gunray, an alien viceroy, orders them to be killed, and the two Jedi discover upon their escape that the Trade Federation will launch an invasion of Naboo. With the help of a well-meaning but hopelessly subliterate alien native of Naboo, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan land on Naboo to rescue her ruler, Queen Amidala, a ruler whose rule is a mixture of monarchy and republican democracy. Escaping Naboo, they are attacked by a Federation base star and are forced to land on the distant planet Tatooine, where in seeking parts to complete their journey to Coruscant they encounter a young boy, Annikan Skywalker, a slave who possesses a gift for the savagely dangerous sport of podracing - a gift that Qui-Gon deduces is part of a genetic makeup perfect for the Jedi Order. Annikan eventually joins with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, and in the process attracts the attention of one of Queen Amidala's handmaidens with a dramatic secret, and all reach Coruscant, but endless and pointless debate within the Republic's Senate leave them no choice but to strike out on their own to liberate Naboo, a task made all the more difficult because a traitor within Coruscant has at his command a dissident Jedi warrior who seeks the death of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. It is a distant galaxy eons before the creation of Earth. Societies have evolved among millions of worlds united in a Republic whose capital world is the supercity of Coruscant. Serving as the guardians of order from Coruscant are the Jedi, an order of warriors endowed with super power via self-generated energy fields known as The Force, whose weapons of choice are lightsabers. Within the Galactic Republic exists a collection of imperial-minded worlds united in the euphemistically named Trade Federation, which is engaged in a dispute with the peaceful world of Naboo. Two Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn and young apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi, are sent by Coruscant to Naboo to mediate the Trade Federation's dispute, but when they arrive aboard a Trade Federation base star, they quickly find the trade dispute is merely cover for armed invasion of Naboo. Despite an attempt on their lives, Qui-Gon and Kenobi escape to Naboo, where with the help of a well-meaning but hopelessly inept alien native (one of several races existing on the multicultural planet) they find and rescue the planet's ruling elected Queen, Amidala, a ruler of a political system fusing monarchy with democratic republicanism. They run the Trade Federation's blockade but their starship is damaged and must land on the desert world of Tatooine, where in seeking out parts to repair their ship they encounter a young slave boy, Annikan Skywalker, whom Qui-Gon learns possesses the perfect metaphysical structure for becoming a Jedi. However, all are being pursued by an evil Jedi, Darth Maul, who serves a Jedi lord who seeks to overthrow the Jedi order, leading to a brief saber encounter between Qui-Gon and Darth Maul as the Queen's starship is repaired. Qui-Gon, Kenobi, Annikan, and Amidala (who becomes close to the boy despite the nearly fifteen year age difference between the two) escape and return to Coruscant, but mindless debate with the Republic's senate forces them to strike out on their own back to Naboo, to try and find allies who will help them liberate the planet - and defeat Darth Maul.
