HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS FROM DVDTALK

The Movie:

"Nightmare Before Christmas" is the remarkable production from the mind of Tim Burton and the skills of director Henry Selick. Working together to wrap the package up perfectly is the wonderful score from composer Danny Elfman. The film is so many things; it's a smart kids film, it's got wonderful animation and so much imagination in every detail of its presentation of this amazing world that's been created. The stop-motion animation is absolutely stunning - you look at every frame and ponder how long it took to prepare even that second of the picture.

The main character in the film is Jack Skellington, a character who is the head of a little town that is in charge of Halloween. One day, he stumbles into Christmastown and is amazed by what he sees. So, he decides to kidnap Santa Claus and prepare Christmas on his own, and his attempt is, to say the least, an awkward one.

The film is haunting and strange and yet, there's a beauty to the marvelously gloomy sets. The voice work gets the tone of the characters right, as well. All-in-all, "Nightmare" may give some of the youngest kids nightmares, but older children and adults will likely appreciate the level of talent that went into bringing this wild world to life.

The DVD

VIDEO: Although the non-anamorphic transfer that is included here is pretty good overall, it's dissapointing that Disney did not decide to go anamorphic with this Special Edition release. Sharpness is very good and detail is solid as well, even in the darker areas of the film.

There is no pixelation, but slight shimmering does appear briefly once or twice. The print used is especially clear and crisp, with only a few very tiny marks. Black level is strong and clarity is never lacking.

Colors are also perfect, looking nicely saturated and rich, without any problems apparent. This is a very, very nice looking presentation, but an anamorphic transfer would have been extremely appreciated.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE CRUEL INTENTIONS 3 FROM DVDTALK

Exploration of the intermingling of gamblers AND sexoholics anonymous continues in sunny Santa Barbara (because ritzy New York locations are so goldang EXPENSIVE) where an all-new gaggle of horn'd up well-to-dos bet each other they can't diddle each other and get all handsy anyway. Does it make a lick of sense? Well, yeah, IF YOU PAY STRICT ATTENTION!!! Purely as a public service, yours truly did and enjoyed very nearly every salacious frame. Forget all the polish and star power of the MTV-ified Dangerous Liaisons retread. The horsey prequel. Here we've got a juicy after-prep-school erotic thriller where they forgot to take out all the dirty parts. Bad music. Awful acting. And when it can't get much more astonishing -- a cringe-worthy RAPE tossed off as a mere plot device. Yet there's something magnetic in Hawaiian honey Kristina Anapau's pint-sized Queen Bitch and her court of canoodlers. Could SHE alongside dueling boy-toys Kerr Smith and Nathan Wetherington be the magic trio to muster Blown Away 2!?! Three breasts. Thong flinging. Slow-mo diddling. Gratuitous ping pong match. Advanced hetro tongue rasslin. Ol' falling-in-love montage. Mickey slipping. Kristina twists the knife: "You're off to prison, where the sex is never boring!" (2004, 85 mins, 1.78:1 anam, DD 5.1, Trailers.)

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE CRUEL INTENTIONS 2 FROM DVDTALK

The Movie: I have to say that I haven't been very entertained by the wave of teen films that have come out in the past few years. There's the occasional minorly entertaining picture such as "10 Things I Hate About You", but more often than not, there's a lot of weak films like "Boys and Girls". One teen film always remains at the front of the pack though - the original "Cruel Intentions". A remake of "Dangerous Liasons", the picture was not "art", but contained entertaining performances and seemed lively and energetic, with good production values, dialogue and acting. Sure enough, Fox was looking for a show soon after, and they thought that a television version of "Cruel Intentions" might make for a hit. "Manchester Prep" was the series title, and it looked for a while as if it would arrive soon after, only...it never did. Fox had problems with the content of the show and felt that the sexual material in the show wasn't appropriate for television. Not ones to let things go to waste, Tristar re-worked the pilot of the series, which acts as a prequel to the picture, and is releasing it as "Cruel Intentions 2". Suprisingly, both the film and sequel share the same writer/director, Roger Kumble. Yet, they do not share the same cast. Robin Dunne plays Ryan Phillipe's role as Sebastian, leaving the troubles of his middle-of-nowhere school to live with his father and stepmother (Mimi Rogers!), as well as his new sister, Kathryn(Amy Adams, one of the girls from "Drop Dead Gorgeous"). This sequel generally is a re-tread of the original, as the siblings attack each other and generally toy with those around them. As with a television show, there's generally no suprise that the production values of this sequel are considerably less impressive than the original's mansions. The actors are also lacking in comparison, most notably Adams as Kathryn, who lacks the edge of Gellar's stellar performance in the original. Dunne isn't terrible as Phillipe, but the film lacks a similar character to Selma Blair's in the original, which added a bit of comic relief. With the acting not being quite as strong as the original cast, the As the series never made it on to the air, there has been some added scenes (one involving twin girls) and dialogue that make this more along the lines of something that would be more likely to be on Cinemax than Fox. Occasionally funny, somewhat watchable, this sequel still suffers from a cast that's not as solid as the original film's as well as a script from Kumble that seems like a rather pale copy. Could have been better, and maybe had the series been able to run at all it would have developed into something interesting - but, we'll never know.

HERE IS THE SUMMARY FOR THE MOVIE CRUEL INTENTIONS FROM IMDB

Kathryn makes a bet that her step-brother, Sebastian, won't be able to bed Annette (a virgin, who wants to wait until marriage) before the start of the school year. If he loses, Kathryn gets his Roadster, if he wins, he gets Kathryn Written by Scott Stoecker {mrgastruck@yahoo.com}

Kathryn and Sebastian, two wealthy, manipulative teenage step-siblings from Manhattan's upper-crust, conspire in Cruel Intentions, a wickedly entertaining tale of seduction and betrayal. The stakes are high when the duo agrees upon a deliciously diabolical wager of sexual conquest without consequences. The pawns? The naive Celcile Caldwell and the virginal Annette Hargrove. Its summer break, and Kathryn has been dumped by her beau, Court Reynolds, for the innocent Cecile. Desperate to get even, Kathryn challenges Sebastian to ruin Celcile by deflowering her and turning her into a tramp-thus humiliating Court by delivering Cecile to him as damaged goods. Sebastian has pretty much 'had' all of the girls in New York City up to this point, and he's gotten a bit bored of it all. Though this is too easy a conquest for him, he obliges. He sets his sights on a greater challenge-the new headmaster's daughter, Annette, who recently wrote an article in Seventeen Magazine about how she intends to stay pure until she marries her boyfriend. Sebastian bets Kathryn that he can seduce the chaste and pristine Annette before school begins in the fall. Kathryn thinks this feat impossible and quickly agrees to the wager. The stakes: if Sebastian succeeds, Kathryn must give him a night of unbridled pleasure, something's he's wanted since their parents got married. If he fails, he must forfeit his priceless 1956 Jaguar to Kathryn and suffer the shame of defeat. Written by ---

Bickering step-siblings together quietly control much of the social lives of the students in an affluent NY prep school. Sebastian sees himself as a kind of Don Juan, who always gets his woman, while Katherine would rather enact revenge on ex-flames and corrupt incoming freshmen. One day, Kathryn and Sebastian, driven by a mutual lust for each other and a love of messing with innocent young people's lives, hatch a nefarious plan, and place a kind of bet. Sebastian is to woo and bed the daughter of the new headmaster (a very adamant virgin with plans to only "wait until marriage"), and if he is able to accomplish this seemingly impossible task, he can have his way with Kathryn - the one woman whom he KNOWS he can not have. If he is unable to seduce the ice queen, however, Katherine gets his classic car. Written by J.J. Neal

A pair of unscrupulous siblings star in a sexy tale of seduction, revenge and conquest. After cleverly seducing and ruining the reputation of an unsuspecting classmate, the sparks fly when Kathryn poses the ultimate challenge to her insatiable stepbrother Sebastian: deflower the Headmaster's beautiful, virgin daughter Annette. If he fails, Kathryn gets his 1956 jaguar convertible, but if he succeeds, Sebastain gets to possess and bed Kathryn. The stakes are high, but for Sebastian, the payoff is feverishly irresistible and before the summer's over, no one will escape their relentless game of cat and mouse . . . until one of them is bitten by the most unlikely sensation of all . . . love. HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE CRUEL INTENTIONS FROM DVDTALK

Films profoundly effect my moods. A bad film can leave me angered for a week or more. A good film can leave me smiling for an even longer period. As I sit typing this review(smiling contently), I must say that I liked this film immensely. No one would call it a work of art, and at times "Cruel Intentions" shows its flaws, but it's definitely far and away the smartest and most energetic of the new genre of teen films that has been popping up lately. The film is a reworking of Dangerous Liasons, only now a set of rich Manhattan kids are involved in the schemes. Ryan Phillipe stars as Sebastian Valmont, a rich playboy who simply spends his free time jetting around in his sportscar or writing in his journal about his latest conquest of yet another Manhattan girl. He's joined in his games by his stepsister, Kathryn, a seductress who's angered when she doesn't get her way. I've never liked Phillipe in any of his performances, especially last Summer's "54", where he was almost painful to watch in the role of a bartender at the famous disco club; his performance here is, incredibly, a 180 degree turn into excellence: he's perfect in the role of a young man who's contstantly spinning lies and putting on a happy face to convince the world around him that he's no worse than the next guy. It's the turn from the "happy face" to what lies underneath that constantly makes this performance so fun to watch. It's on display perfectly in the opening scene when Sebastian visits his therapist in a scene that's a perfect observation of the sort of celebrity that comes to the upper class psychologists out there. It ends with the perfect spin as well, with a phone call from the therapist's daughter about Sebastian, but by that time, he's already moved on to his next conquest. Gellar matches him word for word as Kathryn, in a smart, tight performance as the girl who knows all the angles towards getting her way, whether it means using herself or making a simple phone call to start a series of events in order. She's off on her own plans when her boyfriend dumps her for Cecile, a girl Kathryn wants to turn into "damaged goods" to deliver back to her ex-boyfriend. Selma Blair is frequently priceless in the role of Cecile, blessing the character with some scenes of pure, goofy hilarity. It's a rich, wonderful performance. The best scenes of the film may be between Gellar and Phillipe, but Blair is perfection as the movie's more comedic side.

A college student (Johansson) goes to work as a nanny for a rich New York family. Ensconced in their home, she has to juggle their dysfunction, her studies, a new romance, and the spoiled brat in her charge.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE THE NANNY DIARIES FROM DVDTALK

While it's gift-wrapped like a JV version of "The Devil Wears Prada," "Nanny Dairies" (adapted from the book by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Krause) actually has a lot going for it that places the picture miles ahead of the dreary "Devil." I guess it helps to have filmmakers with an exceptional sense of personality.

Fresh out of college, Annie (Scarlett Johansson) is on the hunt for a job in New York City. Falling into her lap one day is Grayer, a young boy with a high-maintenance mother, Mrs. X (Laura Linney), in desperate need of a nanny. Taking the job while trying to hide her service from friends (Alicia Keys) and her mother (Donna Murphy), Annie joins the exclusive nanny club of Manhattan, opening her eyes to the way business is conducted in these rich and powerful circles, fighting to protect her sense of self in the process.

Directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini are following their critical success with the eccentric Harvey Pekar story, "American Splendor," with this airy tale. After a summer of watching films that thrive on chaos and noise, it's a cool breeze to watch the two filmmakers exercise a great deal of control over "Nanny." It's not exactly a Kubrickian essay of obsessive filmmaking mastery, but one can sense "Nanny" is going somewhere, instead of stumbling over mishaps and melodrama.
