THE MOVIE

Onscreen titles at the beginning of "The Hitcher" tell us that 42,000 people are killed on American highways each year. That information, while probably accurate, is irrelevant to the content of the movie. Unless those 42,000 are all killed not by traffic accidents but by homicidal maniacs. Which seems a little high to me.

HERE IS THE SUMMARY OF THE MOVIE GRIND FROM IMDB

While the rest of his high school graduating class is heading to the same old grind of college, skateboarder Eric Rivers and his best friends, Dustin, a goal-oriented workaholic, and misfit slacker Matt have one last summer roadtrip together to follow their dream of getting noticed by the professional skateboarding world--and getting paid to skate. When skating legend Jimmy Wilson's skate demo tour hits town, the boys figure that as soon as he sees their fierce tricks, he'll sign them up for his renowned skate team immediately, right? Unfortunately, the guys are intercepted by Jimmy's road manager and they can't get their foot in the door, much less their boards. But they do get some free advice: keep skating, stay true to yourself, and stay in the game--if you're good, you'll get noticed. Following their dream-- and Jimmy's national tour--Eric, Dustin and Matt start their own skate team, reluctantly sponsored by Dustin and his college fund. After recruiting laid-back ladies man Sweet Lou to join their crew and provide the wheels for their tour, team Super Duper launches the ride of their lives in an outrageous road trip from Chi-town to Santa Monica. The professional scene doesn't exactly welcome nobody skaters, but these outsiders stick together through extreme misadventures. In their quest to go pro, they meet professional vert skating champions Bucky Lasek, Bob Burnquist and Pierre Luc Gagnon, skate pro Bam Margera and his crew Preston Lacy, Ehren Danger McGhehey and Jason Wee Man Acuña, as well as sexy skate chick Jamie as they grind handrails across America and force the skateboarding world to give 'em a piece of the action. Written by Sujit R. Varma

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE GRIND FROM DVDTALK

The summer skateboarding flop Grind is rated PG-13 for crude humor, sexual content, and language. I think this review might have been slapped with the same rating if it had been run past the MPAA, but probably just for language. See, Grind is really fucking bad. The movie stars Mike Vogel as our determined young hero, Eric Rivers. There are only fifty or so sponsored, professional skateboarders around the country, and Eric is hellbent on joining their ranks. He schemes to catch the eye of pro boarder Jimmy Wilson (Jason London), who trots around the country in a posh tour bus and has his pick of fabulously beautiful women. Eric gathers a group of friends -- broke 'n college bound Dustin (Adam Brody, who looks like someone took Colin Hanks, MTV News' Gideon Yago, and an inability to say the letter 's', put them in a blender, and mashed the "Puree" button), womanizer Sweet Lou (Joey Kern), and loudmouthed chronic farter Matt (Vince Vieluf, who's better in movies where he can't talk) -- and follows Wilson on tour, posing as a group with a non-existent sponsor. Hilarity theoretically ensues as the four of them travel from state to state, skating incessantly, finding romance, and getting caught up in all sorts of zany misadventures.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE TERMINATOR 2 JUDGMENT DAY FROM DVDTALK

The Movie: Terminator 2: Judgement Day, almost 10 years after it's original theatrical release is still as captivating as I remember it and enjoyable to watch from start to finish. Terminator 2 is just one of those movies that no matter how many times you've seen it, even though you know the ending and all of the lines, it's still a great movie to just sit back and watch with a bucket full of popcorn. T2 is a classic 90's action movie with plenty of explosions, guns, and blood...er, metallic liquid.

The Movie:

When Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell made indy horror history with the relentless low budget The Evil Dead, you knew it was only a matter of time before a sequel was to be churned out and in this case the sequel turned out to be almost more of a remake, than an actual follow up film – but who cares. Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn is the most fun you're likely ever going to have with a horror film.

The Movie

Back when I reviewed the '80s teen classic License to Drive, I shared the story of my last day at college, when myself and the good doctor, Matthew J. McCue, decided to recapture our youth and rent the Corey-filled License and the eminently-quotable, but criminally under-appreciated The Monster Squad (on VHS!). As the last thing I experienced before entering "the real world," these films hold a special place in my heart.

But sentimentality will only go so far when it comes to enjoying an old film or TV show (a fact cruelly learned in reviewing "He-Man".) Fortunately for The Monster Squad, there's much more than nostalgia going for it, as the story of a band of horror film fans battling the classic movie monsters is an fun piece of filmmaking that's also solid '80s nostalgia and an exciting action flick.

HERE IS THE SUMMARY OF THE ANT BULLY FROM IMDB

Lucas Nickle's the new kid in town and the local bully, Steve, makes sure he knows it. Lucas gets so fed up with being bullied, he takes out his frustration on ants in his backyard in hilarious ways, like squirting them with his garden hose or stamping on the ant hill. Lucas is sentenced to hard labor in the ruins and learns to be more compassionate to ants. He becomes an ant friend, then must become an ant hero when Stan Beals, the local pest control guy, who's an even bigger bully, comes to wipe out the entire colony. An "ants vs pest control" battle ensues and Zoc reluctantly accepts that Lucas may be the ants' only chance of survival.

HERE IS A REVIEW FROM DVD TALK ON THE MOVIE THE ANT BULLY

The Movie:

Kids say the darndest things, even the animated variety. Leave it to a children's flick like The Ant Bully to nicely illustrate a grim but universal truth of life. The movie begins with scrawny little Lucas Nickle (voiced by Zach Tyler from television's "Avatar: The Last Airbender") suffering a wedgie at the hands of the neighborhood bully. "What are you gonna do about it?" Lucas' tormenter asks rhetorically. "Nothing, 'cause I'm big and you're small."

Almost immediately after the humiliation, Lucas releases his frustrations on an anthill in his front yard. He douses the insects with a squirt gun, boasting that he's entitled to do so since "I'm big and you're small."

As a wise man once said, poop (this is a kid's movie, after all) rolls downhill.

Based on an acclaimed children's book by John Nickle, The Ant Bully details how the aforementioned ant colony weathers continual abuse from Lucas, whom the bugs have dubbed "the Destroyer." A wizard ant named Zoc (Nicolas Cage) -- what's that you say? You didn't know there were wizard ants? -- resolves to halt the reign of terror. When Lucas' parents go out of town and leave the boy in the care of his wacky grandmother (Lily Tomlin), Zoc uses a magical potion to shrink Lucas down to ant-size. The boy awakens tiny enough to slide down his bed atop a potato chip.

Lucas is quickly spirited away to the colony, where the magisterial queen ant (Meryl Streep) sentences the destroyer to live among the ants and learn about their day-to-day lives. Writer-director John A. Davis slathers on the socialist utopia. Under the tutelage of idealistic Hova (Julia Roberts), Zoc's main squeeze, Lucas is educated about the camaraderie of a close-knit community where the ants share and do their part for the greater good. At last, a children's movie that Karl Marx could love.

Or Gandhi, for that matter. From pacifism to the importance of social diversity, The Ant Bully overflows with left-leaning life lessons. All of it is well-intentioned; some of it is genuinely affecting. Much of it is gratingly didactic.

Nevertheless, one particular aspect of the picture resonates above all else: The power of empathy. At its heart, The Ant Bully is about walking in someone else's shoes -- six shoes, to be exact -- as Lucas comes to realize how he has terrorized the ants. The moral is telegraphed from the opening minutes, but as morals go, it's not too shabby -- and one that hasn't really been explored in other animated flicks.

The star-studded cast supplies solid voice work. Particular standouts are cult-movie fave Bruce Campbell as a swaggering scout ant and Paul Giamatti as slovenly exterminator Stan Beals of Beals-a-Bug pest control.

Fortunately, The Ant Bully isn't all preaching. From the chopper-like wasps to a sad-sack glowworm, the imaginings of the insect world boast an overcharged visual style reminiscent of Davis' Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. The action sequences pack real excitement; a few scenes might even be too intense for the youngest viewers. And while there is no shortage of poop and pee references, the scatological humor is held in check more than most children's pictures.

The DVD
The Video:

As one would expect from a new movie, the DVD picture quality is excellent, bursting with vibrant colors and reasonably sharp detail. It is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen.

The Audio:

The Dolby Digital 5.1 is first-rate, but doesn't give the back speakers as much of a workout as one would have hoped. Audio tracks and subtitles are available in English, French and Spanish.

Extras:

It Takes a Colony (16:30) is considerably more entertaining than your usual making-of featurette – perhaps because it is hosted by an animated beetle (not to be confused with an animated Beatle, which, of course, would be Yellow Submarine). Interviews with director-writer Davis and the crew reveal the painstaking work involved in the CG artwork.

Also included are seven animated shorts that spin off from the Ant Bully storyline. Clocking in for an aggregate length of eight minutes and 18 seconds, the clips are mildly cute. Kids will probably dig 'em. Much more interesting -- and surprisingly meaty -- are 10 additional scenes (11:20) that didn't make it into the final film.

Rounding out the extras are a theatrical trailer and, for the easily amused, an ant habitat TV screensaver.

Final Thoughts:

Amid a slew of top-notch animated movies in 2006 (Cars, Over the Hedge, Monster House), The Ant Bully unfortunately found itself lost in the proverbial shuffle. It deserves better; hopefully this solid DVD package will do the trick.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY FROM DVDTALK.

"Chuck & Larry" is a clumsy comedy, made with heartening intentions, but a little wobbly in execution. But you know what? It isn't "Click," and that's something to celebrate.

Larry (Kevin James) is a widowed fireman left with two kids to take care of. His partner in flame is Chuck (Adam Sandler), a distinctly hetero bachelor who is beholden to Larry for saving his life. When his benefit package is threatened, Larry decides that arranging a sham gay marriage to Chuck will solve all his problems. As the new couple on the block, Chuck and Larry find intolerance and judgment everywhere they turn. For Chuck, the charade is especially hard when he falls for their lawyer (Jessica Biel), putting the whole scam at risk for exposure from snoopy outsiders.
