The quest takes them from New Jersey to Hollywood where a showdown involving the police, the jewel thieves, and the Bluntman and Chronic filmmakers will decide the fate of Suzanne, Jay, Silent Bob, and their good names. During the commentary track for "Chasing Amy", director Kevin Smith bemoans the fact that, no matter how hard he tries to improve his craft, fans always come up to him and tell him the scenes with Jay and Silent Bob are their favorites. Although things were a little shaky with the protesting over Smith's "Dogma" (which simply stopped the moment the film was released) and the unfortunate failure of the director's cartoon show based upon his first film, "Clerks", it was time to, well, "strike back". According to Smith, it was time to wrap up the "View Askewniverse" that he's built his features thus far upon.

The Movie: (Movie review written in May, '02) It's interesting to see the resurgence in comic book movies, after many thought that director Joel Schumacher single-handedly ruined the "Batman" franchise with the one-two punch of "Batman Forever" and "Batman and Robin". "X-Men" was enough of a hit to renew interest in the genre, which was followed by development of such characters as "Daredevil" (who will be played by Ben Affleck) and "Spider Man", which finally emerged out of development hell after a lengthy battle over rights and several screenplay treatments, including some work by James Cameron.

Well, it's taken over 25 years, but someone has finally made a superhero film that surpasses Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie. I should start this review by noting that I wasn't a huge fan of Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man. I thought the first half was very good, but then the second half got over saturated with CGI effects and Willem Dafoe's overacting. Raimi doesn't make the same mistake the second time around. What Raimi (and writers Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and Michael Chabon) understand is that the real story of Spider-Man is Peter Parker, not superpowers and spinning webs. Peter has much more screen time in this movie than his masked alter-ego, and the film is that much better because of it. Don't worry, "True Believers", the action you crave is still there – but its Tobey Maguire's portrayal as Peter than makes Spider-Man 2 soar.

VIDEO QUALITY: Uh, well...I mean, it's "Clerks". If you haven't seen the film before, it's a little black and white film that was made for about $25,000 that went on to become a cult success. The image isn't terribly sharp, but at least it's pleasingly clear. If you've seen the laserdisc version of the film, it looks about the same(literally, it is the same)- but I'll get into that more in the extras section). The black and white image is a little more defined and stronger than the laserdisc, but there's also a noticable amount of artifacts that detract from the enjoyment. The artifacts aren't nearly as bad as another recent release of another small Miramax film, Flirting With Disaster, but they're noticable. There's some problems with the print such as small scratches and a couple of burns in the film that Smith talks about in the commentary. To make a long story short, definitely not flawless- but "Clerks" has never looked this good.

The Movie:

After a few false starts, a law suit, and the attachment then exodus of a couple of 'name' directors (like David Cronenberg and Paul Verhoeven), Michael Caton-Jones, the man behind Doc Hollywood and Rob Roy finally got Sharon Stone's return to slutty form up there on the big screen where it stayed for about a week. Basic Instinct 2 was a flop, it got more bad reviews than you can shake a stick at and it hardly set the box office on fire.

After the events in the first Basic Instinct, female crime writer and psycho-sexual killing machine Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone) has relocated to London, England. When we catch up with her, she and a stoned soccer player are coming back from a party and as they're doing a hundred miles an hour down the street, she decides to have him finger her to a climax. As she gets there, they drive off the road and into the river, he drowns, she makes it out, and finds herself under arrest courtesy of Detective Washburn (David Thewlis).

The court orders her to have a psychiatric evaluation where a shrink named Dr. Michael Glass (David Morrissey) states that she isn't insane but that she is addicted to taking risks. She's released back into the general population, much to Washburn's dismay, but decides that she wants to see more of Dr. Glass and so she coerces him into taking her on as a patient while sleeping with his ex-wife's current boy-toy who, of course, soon winds up a corpse. She shows up at some of the same parties as Glass, who thinks of her when he was rough sex with a waitress (Flora Montgomery) that he picks up one night, and after her head games don't land him in her bed she tells him that she's discontinuing his services, knowing that that'll be enough to spur him on. Is Tramell on a killing spree, pulling the old black widow routine by slicing and dicing whoever should fall into bed with her? Will Dr. Glass be her next victim or is this all an elaborate set up?

It's a vast improvement over 2005's laughably dim-witted superhero tale, though it still lacks any major high-stakes excitement or surprises. In fact, it's still not very good at all. But at least it's not aggressively stupid! Baby steps, people.
