The Movie

Watching the Scary Movie series evolve over the last few years has been fascinating – what began as full throttle, go-for-broke gross-out comedy has shifted into a more benign, goofy, satirical enterprise; the Wayans brothers were undoubtedly going for the lowest common denominator (how else to explain a character being brutally sodomized by a demonic clown?) but since the Scary Movie franchise has been in the hands of director David Zucker, the last two films in the quadrilogy have functioned as a sweetly inconsequential greatest hits compilation, spoofing the blockbuster flicks of the day, raking in the cash and moving on.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE THE GODFATHER PART II FROM DVDTALK

The Godfather: Part II is the rare sequel that betters its original for emotional depth and meaning. Francis Coppola was reluctant to do the first movie but he takes control of the second and creates an epic. The daringly structured film spans two generations and ties together a number of historical events - including the Kefauver crime investigations and the Cuban revolution.

Even more impressively, Coppola and Mario Puzo's script doesn't rely on the first films' glamorizing of the activities of the criminal Corleones. Michael Corleone is destroying his family even as he secures their position. The Godfather: Part II goes for a higher theme, by arguing that the Machiavellian maneuvering, corruption and violence of his dynasty is just a microcosm of political strife between nations: "We're all part of the same hypocrisy." Michael says these words to a Senator that he will soon control through murder and intimidation.

The Movie:

Freedom Writers is a bit like the troubled teenagers it depicts. Just when you think the film is wasting its potential and straying down the wrong path, it turns around to reveal genuine heart and emotional honesty.

The storyline itself is based on the real-life story of an amazing teacher and her at-risk students. If that sounds familiar, it should. Ever since Mr. Charles Chipping brandished a piece of chalk at the Brookfield School for Boys, the movies have been littered with the well-meaning bones of crusading teachers, some classic (To Sir with Love), some not so much (Dangerous Minds). But Freedom Writers is smarter than most. It gets so many things right, in fact, that its occasional lapses into melodrama are all the more off-putting.

"Sin City" is four stories inter-weaved telling tales of corruption in Basin City. The first story (The Customer is always right) is short, and is based on the depression of women that they need to pay a man to feel loved when they commit suicide. The next story is Part 1 of "That Yellow Bastard" about a cop who needs to save a young girl from being raped. The third story (The Hard Goodbye) features a man taking revenge on a heartless killer who murdered his one-night stand. The fourth story (The Big, Fat Kill) stars a man who must dispatch a cop's body, but it will be a tough ride to do it. Following that are two conclusions to Sin City, the ending of "That Yellow Bastard" which is set 8 years later, and a short story that ends Sin City. Written by Jesse Hefford

The Movie:
"Sin City" is the latest film from director Robert Rodriguez, and in my opinion, it's his best work. Not only is it his best work, but it's the only film that I've truly liked and appreciated of the new legion of "digital" films (see also "Sky Captain and the World of Tomrrow"), where the actors inhabit worlds largely created in the computer.

Called in to the World Trade Center to help evacuate survivors after the first plane hit the towers on September 11th, Port Authority cop Will Jimeno (Michael Pena, "Crash") and Sergeant John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) marched into the buildings frightened at what they would find. When the towers collapsed, the two cops were trapped under 20 feet of steel and concrete, left alone to fight for their lives. Back home, their wives (Maria Bello and Maggie Gyllenhaal) struggled to maintain calm when faced with mounting questions and fears over the whereabouts of their beloved husbands.

Alex Rose (Stiller) and Nancy Kendricks (Barrymore) are a young, professional, New York couple in search of their dream home. The duplex is a dream come true, complete with multiple fireplaces, except for one thing: Mrs. Connelly (Eileen Essel), the cranky old lady who lives on the rent-controlled top floor. Assuming she is elderly and ill, they take the apartment but their hopes are quickly dashed when they realize that Mrs. Connelly is an energetic senior who enjoys watching her television at top volume day in and day out and rehearsing in a brass band. A writer, Alex is attempting to finish his novel against a looming deadline. However, each day as he begins to write, he is interrupted by Mrs. Connelly's numerous demands and requests and what begins as a nuisance quickly escalates into an all-out war. When Nancy loses her job and the pair are trapped at home together with Mrs. Connelly, their rage turns to homicidal fantasy as they plot ways to get rid of their no-good neighbour... HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE DUPLEX FROM DVDTALK

The Movie:


While not exactly a complete reversal after the utterly awful "Death to Smoochy", "Duplex" is still a bit of an improvement after Danny Devito's last directorial effort. The obvious inspiration here is Devito's "War of the Roses", but unfortunately, Devito goes only somewhat as dark here before stepping back a few steps (the picture is rated PG-13).

The film follows young couple Alex (Ben Stiller) and Nancy (Drew Barrymore), who have begun their search for a place of their own. They think they've found just the place when they are shown a beautiful Brooklyn duplex. Nancy thinks it's the perfect place to start a family, while Alex believes that it'll be a quiet enough place to finish his second novel.

When Jackass: The Movie did big numbers at the box office, it only made sense that the guys would get back together for a sequel. While spin off television shows like The Wildboyz and Viva La Bam are decent enough, the chemistry and insanity of Jackass has ensured that it's still popular even if the series itself is no longer with us. Jackass Number Two, once again directed by long time Jackass alumni Jeff Tremaine (the man behind the first film), does a great job of filling the void that has existed over the last couple of years and it delivers exactly what you'd expect from it – stupid frat boy humor and completely retarded stunts.
