An exploration of the relationship between Elizabeth I (Blanchett) and the adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh (Owen).

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE ELIZABETH THE GOLDEN AGE FROM DVDTALK

  • You don't want to mess with Elizabeth fans. I learned that the hard way. Loyal subjects of the 1998 costume drama, which put Cate Blanchett on everyone's map, are possessed of a fervent dedication you don't want to cross. Trust me. Having somehow spent years not seeing the film, only renting it this past summer in anticipation of the long-awaited sequel, I encountered the faithful regularly, and when I admitted my failing, they all looked at me with the sort of disgust reserved for the worst heretic. I often worried they would storm my apartment, tearing my Audrey Hepburn and Wong Kar-Wai posters from my walls and dumping my DVD collection in the nearest river.

  • I suspect director Shekhar Kapur had a righteous fear when he set out to make the second segment of his proposed trilogy. Elizabeth: The Golden Age had to be good or the fans would lynch the poor guy. I'm happy to say, Kapur succeeded in every way. So, if you're nervously pacing the room wondering if The Golden Age is the biggest mistitling in movie history, calm your nerves, sit down, and relax. There is reason to go on living.

  • Elizabeth: The Golden Age picks up a small distance into the Virgin Queen's reign. Blanchett reprises her role, returning with the commanding gait that the monarch had adopted at the end of the first picture, yet tempering it with the kind of confidence that only experience can instill. You can see why the actress made her director wait nearly ten years before she'd climb into the royal costume again. It required a different performer than the relative newcomer that so wowed us back in the day, as Elizabeth has become a completely different woman.

  • As it stands, the Protestant ruler is still in hot water with the papist powers back in Rome. Many believe Elizabeth's half-sister, the devoutly Catholic Mary Stuart (Samantha Morton), is the rightful heir to the throne, and Philip II of Spain (Jordi Molla) sees it as his divine mission to restore the proper Christian faith to this lost kingdom. Elizabeth remains staunch in all things. She won't revert back to the old ways, she won't yield to foreign powers, and she certainly won't take some simpering prince for her husband.

  • Yet, England is no paradise. Financially, they don't have the money they need, and Elizabeth's most trusted advisor, Sir Francis Walshingham, fears the country won't survive a clash with Spain. He'd rather position his Queen politically by finding her the most advantageous conjugal union. Walshingham is once again played by Geoffery Rush, who was marvelously conniving last time around. Here, like Blanchett, he takes his character forward in years. He has grown older, less sharp, and his insecurity leaves him brittle and vulnerable.

When an Egyptian terrorism suspect "disappears" on a flight from Africa to Washington DC, his American wife and a CIA analyst find themselves caught up in a struggle to secure his release from a secret detention facility somewhere outside the US. Written by Gavin Hood (director)

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE RENDITION FROM DVDTALK

  • As a feature film about the evils of political torture, "Rendition" is crude and shrill. As a thriller, it's a complete snooze. It sounds unfair to nail a do-gooder film such as this to the wall, but rarely do you find a ripped-from-the-headlines motion picture as bloodless and pedestrian. My apologies to "The Kingdom."
  • On his way from South Africa to his Chicago home to see his wife (Reese Witherspoon) and child, engineer Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally) is detained by US (Jake Gyllenhaal) and North African (Yigal Naor) agents hunting for a connection to a recent terrorist bombing. Anwar is tortured without much success, while his concerned wife starts knocking on the doors of government officials (Peter Sarsgaard and Alan Arkin), leading to the mastermind of the detention: WASPy, southern-fried CIA head stooge Corrinne Whitman (Meryl Streep). Meanwhile, a terrorist group grows in power and radical might, ticking down the clock to when they will strike again.

  • It should be noted that if you plan to see "Rendition" for the acting efforts of Gyllenhaal, Witherspoon, or Streep, remember to bring a magazine with you to the cinema. It shouldn't count against "Rendition" that the A-list talents have glorified cameos in the final film (the bulk of the picture makes time with the terrorists), yet it's a part of a larger problem with the picture: too many characters running too many mindgames.

  • "Rendition" is director Gavin Hood's Hollywood-bred follow-up to his South African drama, "Tsotsi," and I would love to know what happened to the man's sense of self-respect. "Rendition" is a soulless sermon on wrongful imprisonment, torture, and the cyclical nature of terrorism. If you've read these elements in a movie description before, welcome to fall 2007, where every other film appears to be about the Middle East battle grounds, interchanging only the casts. Heavens, I never thought I'd be so excited to see "Saw IV."

WHY DID I GET MARRIED NOW AVAILABLE

WHY DID I GET MARRIED NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

HERE IS THE SUMMARY FOR THE MOVIE WHY DID I GET MARRIED FROM IMDB

The big screen adaptation of Perry's stage play about the trials of marriage, and what happens to one family when a sexy young temptress arrives on the scene.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE WHY DID I GET MARRIED FROM DVDTALK

  • "Why Did I Get Married?" is Tyler Perry's best screen effort to date, which is to say it's comfortably mediocre instead of criminally intolerable.
  • Four couples, Terry (Tyler Perry) and Diane (Sherry Leal), Patricia (Janet Jackson) and Gavin (Malik Yoba), Marcus (Michael Jai White) and Angela (Tasha Smith), and Mike (Richard T. Jones) and Shelia (Jill Scott), gather together every year for a vacation to clear their heads. Now in the snowy Colorado Mountains, the couples find this year to be their most explosive, with everyone's dirty laundry aired out over the course of the hellish week, ending friendships and marriages. With their lives now scattered, the couples do their best to revive their love, only to find they might be better off apart.
  • Last February's "Daddy's Little Girls" brought mogul/filmmaker Tyler Perry to his lowest point. Not only was the feature a cancerous, socially irresponsible catastrophe, it was greeted with his lowest box office grosses yet. Perhaps the diminished reception of "Girls" played a subconscious role in the creation of "Married," because this new film shows incredible growth on Perry's part as a storyteller and director.
  • Perry loves to play with stereotypes and melodrama. They are his preferred tools to fashion his string of plays, cinematic efforts, and recent television forays (the excretal "House of Payne"). "Married" is another slice of obvious to fit snugly in Perry's oeuvre, playing broadly to his core audience with an expected buffet of obnoxious characters and "Guiding Light" plotting. However, there's a spark to "Married" that's never revealed itself in the filmmaker's work before. Dare I call it maturation?

MICHAEL CLAYTON NOW AVAILABLE

MICHAEL CLAYTON NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

HERE IS THE SUMMARY FOR THE MOVIE MICHAEL CLAYTON FROM IMDB

Michael Clayton (George Clooney) is an in-house "fixer" at one of the largest corporate law firms in New York. A former criminal prosecutor, Clayton takes care of Kenner, Bach & Ledeen's dirtiest work at the behest of the firm's co-founder Marty Bach (Sydney Pollack). Though burned out and hardly content with his job as a fixer, his divorce, a failed business venture and mounting debt have left Clayton inextricably tied to the firm. At U/North, meanwhile, the career of litigator Karen Crowder (Tilda Swinton) rests on the multi-million dollar settlement of a class action suit that Clayton's firm is leading to a seemingly successful conclusion. But when Kenner Bach's brilliant and guilt-ridden attorney Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson) sabotages the U/North case, Clayton faces the biggest challenge of his career and his life. Written by Warner Bros. Pictures

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE MICHAEL CLAYTON FROM DVDTALK

Now here's a picture perfect for those who bemoan the lack of quality coming out of Hollywood, or, at the very least, assume a dearth of intelligence. "Michael Clayton" is an assuredly dense, thematically sticky piece of thrillerdom, piloted by complicated psychological impulses, not convention. It's another stab by George Clooney to bring back a little old fashioned character ambiguity to the big screen, and it's his most successful effort yet.

Michael Clayton (Clooney) is a "janitor," a person brought in by his law firm to clean up messes that can't demand the time of a proper legal team. When a protracted lawsuit against a billion-dollar chemical corporation is tripped up by the mental instability of the primary attorney (Tim Wilkinson), Michael is called in to contain the fallout. Once inside the case, Michael's eyes are opened by a multitude of inconsistencies and damaging secrets, putting his own life in jeopardy as he investigates how far the deception leads.

For better (the "Bourne Identity" trilogy) or for worse ("Bait," "The Devil's Advocate") writer Tony Gilroy has survived the business long enough to earn his stars as a director. "Clayton" is an incredible debut for the screenwriter, pulling together a pointed, intelligent legal thriller that isn't quite a legal thriller at all. Gilroy has molded an impassion character study of morally queasy individuals, in a film that handles like a sleek suspense creation custom fitted for mass audiences with a supreme level of patience.

What's so admirable about "Clayton" is that it remains such a moody effort from start to finish. This is a dark film infested with lowlife characters, but Gilroy is infatuated with their choices when shoved up against a wall. The story has little time for heroes and villains, instead conveying the richness of uncertainty, where right and wrong buttress an instinctive hunger for survival. For Clayton and the lawyer characters that line the film (portrayed by Tilda Swinton and Sydney Pollack), justice is almost never a consideration. It's almost as though any proper edict seen to conclusion is only randomly uncovered by routine selfishness, not a sense of moral duty. Gilroy loves to live in these tight spaces, and that's where "Clayton" finds the juiciest bits of drama and legal interaction.

NEWS: JASON VOORHEES FROM FRIDAY THE 13TH WILL BE ON SUPERNATURAL THIS SEASON

JASON FROM FRIDAY THE 13TH WILL BE ON SUPERNATURAL THIS SEASON

JASON STARTED HIS CAREER AS A MURDER BY KILLING OFF ALL OF HIS COUNSELORS AND THEN TEENAGERS.

THEN HE WENT INTO SPACE AND FACED SOME MORE TEENS

NEXT HE WENT AFTER A LEGEND IN THE KILLING BUSINESS AND THAT IS FREDDY KRUGER IN FREDDY VS JASON.

NOW HE IS GOING AFTER THE GOOD OLD BOYS FROM SUPERNATURAL IN THIS SEASON'S 10TH EPISODE.

HERE IS THE ARTICLE FOR YOU GUYS THAT EXPLAINS HOW JASON WILL BE MEETING THE WINCHESTERS IN A GOOD OLD FIGHT.

I'm not sure how many horror fans actually watch the show Supernatural but soon you will have a reason to at least catch one episode. I had always thought it was a show for 14 year old little girls to oogle over the guys. Kind of like a TV version of The Covenant.

In the new season the creators were granted an appearence by Jason Voorhees himself. Creator Eric Kripke tells the fanzine, "We have Jason from Friday the 13th, the character with the hockey mask. He shows up in episode 10. We have cleared the rights to actually use Jason. We have a twist on it so it is not really Jason out there but we have found an interesting way to bring him in so Sam and Dean fight Jason from Friday the 13th. In our world, that is a pretty cool guest star."

The way he puts it is a little odd. They have him but not really him. OK.. Well it should be interesting anyway before Platinum Dunes does there remake. This maybe the last time we see Jason with his established history intact.

  • In February, 1945, one of the fiercest battles of the Pacific theater of World War II occurs on the tiny island of Iwo Jima. Thousands of Marines attack the stronghold maintained by thousands of Japanese, and the slaughter on both sides is horrific. Early in the battle, an American flag is raised atop the high point, Mount Suribachi, and a photograph of the raising becomes an American cause celebre. As a powerful inspiration to war-sick Americans, the photo becomes a symbol of the Allied cause. The three surviving flag raisers, Rene Gagnon, John Bradley, and Ira Hayes, are whisked back to civilization to help raise funds for the war effort. But the accolades for heroism heaped upon the three men are at odds with their own personal realizations that thousands of real heroes lie dead on Iwo Jima, and that their own contributions to the fight are only symbolic and not deserving of the singling out they are experiencing. Each of the three must come to terms with the honors, exploitation, and grief that they face simply for being in a photograph. Written by Jim Beaver {jumblejim@prodigy.net}

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS FROM DVDTALK

The Movie:
  • "Flags of Our Fathers" focuses on three men that took part in raising a flag that inspired a nation when it needed it most. Iwo Jima was a tactically important WWII battle near the end of the war...five marines and a navy corpsman raised the second American flag at the top of the island's mountain, after the first smaller one was taken down. A war photojournalist happened to catch the raising of the flag in one quick photograph, which started a huge chain of events. Back in the states, the photo was instantly recognized for its propaganda and campaign potential. "Flags of Our Fathers" focuses on the three men who remained alive after the picture was published. It's a story of war, love, and the struggle these three men go through in their lives with the weight of our nation on their shoulders.

  • Within a week of the photograph being taken, three out of the six flag raisers had been killed in action. John (Doc) Bradley (Ryan Phillippe), Rene Gagnon (Jesse Bradford), and Ira Hayes (Adam Beach)are immediately sent back to the states to raise money for the war effort. With the realization that they are home safe while their brothers are still fighting and being killed over on Iwo Jima, they are struggling with some serious guilt and flashbacks. They must attempt to come together and help each other bear the burden the photograph put on their shoulders.

  • The thing that I love about Clint Eastwood as a director is that he knows his stuff. He is not afraid to go above and beyond, just to show us something that might not be the biggest detail but is an important detail. His attention to every significant fact, no matter how small, is fantastic and the accuracy of the war is absolutely moving. Clint Eastwood creates an intense and compelling drama that motivates, informs, and draws us in for more.

  • My favorite part about "Flags of Our Fathers" is the absolute accuracy of the film. As my wife and I were watching we had Wikipedia.com pulled up and were reading the story of Iwo Jima and the flag raisers. This was by far the best way to watch the film since we could really understand each detail and event. After reading about Iwo Jima we were able to see exactly what was described on the page happen during "Flags of Our Fathers." It was interesting to begin to understand the intricacies of the events as well. For instance, the fact that there were two flag raisings could get confusing, because only the second became of any importance. And because the photograph didn't show the faces of the flag raisers, the identities of the individuals became an issue when one was misidentified. The film goes over everything with amazing precision and is definitely more compelling than those school history lessons.
