HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE MYSTERY MEN FROM DVDTALK

In Short
: Universal produces a nice special edition, but the movie's still a "renter".

The Movie:
Original Review From August, 1999: A very big movie with a handful of tiny ideas, "Mystery Men" is a movie with a few jokes up its sleeve, but definitely not enough to extend over two hours. It's generally one big mess- a stew of special effects, awkward action, lack of editing and enormous sets ready to swallow it all whole. Greg Kinnear(very annoying) stars as Captain Amazing, the resident superhero of Champion City. Not only does he fight crime, he gets ad deals(decals are plastered across his suit like a race-car driver.) When he finds that he's about to lose his deal with Pepsi, he decides to free Cassanova Frankenstein(Geoffrey Rush) from jail, giving him someone to fight, since all of his other enemies are in prison.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE BRUCE ALMIGHTY FROM DVDTALK

Much has been made of Jim Carrey's attempts to become a serious actor. "The Truman Show" started Carrey's slide into dramatic roles, and the pairing of "Man on the Moon" and "The Majestic" continued it. Neither of the latter two pictures received much interest from the public, but both showed that Carrey had potential beyond comedy. Nothing wrong with "Ace Ventura", mind you - in fact, it's a blueprint for the movie that Carrey should have done - low-budget, good concept and let the actor run wild like there's no tomorrow. "Bruce Almighty" could have been a concept that resulted in Carrey magic. It doesn't, and all signs point to director Tom Shadyac as the guilty party. Shadyac, the filmmaker who found unexplained success with "Patch Adams" a few years ago, has since been carrying on a crusade for sentimentality in cinema. In "Bruce", he abruptly halts the comedy in the last half hour and brings on heaping helpings of sentimentality and sappiness.

TALK TO ME NOW AVAILABLE

TALK TO ME NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

HERE IS THE SUMMARY FOR THE MOVIE TALK TO ME FROM IMDB

The true life story of Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene Jr. In the mid-to-late 1960s, in Washington, D.C., vibrant soul music and exploding social consciousness were combining to unique and powerful effect. It was the place and time for Petey to fully express himself - sometimes to outrageous effect - and "tell it like it is." With the support of his irrepressible and tempestuous girlfriend Vernell, the newly minted ex-con talks his way into an on-air radio gig. He forges a friendship and a partnership with fellow prison inmate Milo's brother Dewey Hughes. From the first wild morning on the air, Petey relies on the more straight-laced Dewey to run interference at WOL-AM, where Dewey is the program director. At the station, Petey becomes an iconic radio personality, surpassing even the established popularity of his fellow disc jockeys, Nighthawk and Sunny Jim. Combining biting humor with social commentary, Petey openly courts controversy for station owner E.G. Sonderling. Petey was determined to make not just himself but his community heard during an exciting and turbulent period in American history. As Petey's voice, humor, and spirit surge across the airwaves with the vitality of the era, listeners tune in to hear not only incredible music but also a man speaking directly to them about race and power in America like few people ever have. Through the years, Petey's "The truth just is" style --- on - and off-air - would redefine both Petey and Dewey, and empower each to become the man he would most like to be. HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE TALK TO ME FROM DVDTALK

More often than I care to admit, "Talk to Me" reminded me of the Howard Stern bio-pic, "Private Parts." Only, instead of lesbians and Baba Booey, "Talk" offers social upheaval and instants of comedy that would make Don Knotts exclaim, "That's a little too broad." It's a peculiar, persuasive take on a radio icon, yet it's barely held together long enough to fill two hours.

Ralph Waldo "Petey" Greene (Don Cheadle) was a hustler and a convict who held a gift for radio that saved him from the hell behind bars. Released in the mid-60s, Greene took his act to the Washington D.C. R&B station WOL to impress uptight program director Dewey Hughes (a wonderful Chiwetel Ejiofor). Hitting the airwaves with his boundary-pushing candor, Greene was an instant smash in the depressed community, starting him on a long career of fame and controversy before the entertainment world became too much pressure for him for bear.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE THE DEPARTED FROM DVDTALK

Continuing the "rise and fall" formula of classics like his own Goodfellas, Raging Bull and Casino, director Martin Scorsese's The Departed (2006) reminds us that bad things can happen to bad people. Based on the Chinese film trilogy Infernal Affairs, The Departed relocates this story of undercover cops and robbers to the violent region of South Boston. Though yours truly hasn't seen the film that Scorsese has borrowed from, it's highly evident that the director has put his own stamp on this American remake. Long story short: if you like your crime sagas bold, brash and bloody, this one's right up your alley.

The Departed follows the devilish Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson), an Irish-American crime lord loosely based on real-life fugitive James "Whitey" Bulger...not the New York gangster of the same name. Costello has buried his influence deep in the Massachusetts State Police, hand-picking young Colin Sullivan (who would later become an officer, played by Matt Damon) as a future mole for his organization. On the flipside, Sullivan's classmate Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is persuaded by police captain Queenan (Martin Sheen) and sergeant Dignam (Mark Wahlberg) to join Costello's ranks after a prison stint for assault. It's all downhill from there...for the characters, not us.
