The next story is Part 1 of "That Yellow Bastard" about a cop who needs to save a young girl from being raped. The third story (The Hard Goodbye) features a man taking revenge on a heartless killer who murdered his one-night stand. The fourth story (The Big, Fat Kill) stars a man who must dispatch a cop's body, but it will be a tough ride to do it. The Movie:
"Sin City" is the latest film from director Robert Rodriguez, and in my opinion, it's his best work. Not only is it his best work, but it's the only film that I've truly liked and appreciated of the new legion of "digital" films (see also "Sky Captain and the World of Tomrrow"), where the actors inhabit worlds largely created in the computer.

The Movie:


While not exactly a complete reversal after the utterly awful "Death to Smoochy", "Duplex" is still a bit of an improvement after Danny Devito's last directorial effort. The obvious inspiration here is Devito's "War of the Roses", but unfortunately, Devito goes only somewhat as dark here before stepping back a few steps (the picture is rated PG-13).

The film follows young couple Alex (Ben Stiller) and Nancy (Drew Barrymore), who have begun their search for a place of their own. They think they've found just the place when they are shown a beautiful Brooklyn duplex. Nancy thinks it's the perfect place to start a family, while Alex believes that it'll be a quiet enough place to finish his second novel.

While spin off television shows like The Wildboyz and Viva La Bam are decent enough, the chemistry and insanity of Jackass has ensured that it's still popular even if the series itself is no longer with us. Jackass Number Two, once again directed by long time Jackass alumni Jeff Tremaine (the man behind the first film), does a great job of filling the void that has existed over the last couple of years and it delivers exactly what you'd expect from it – stupid frat boy humor and completely retarded stunts.

The Movie Zodiac kind of sneaked up on me, as I hadn't heard much buzz about it, and I certainly hadn't heard that it was David Fincher's return to the box office, following the stylish thriller Panic Room. As a big fan of Fincher's work, especially his visual style, and a fan of movies and books about serial killers, I was excited to see what Fincher would do with the story of the Zodiac. What I eventually saw wasn't at all what I expected, but was a welcome surprise from a director who obviously doesn't want to be pigeon-holed as an MTV-generation editing junkie, after establishing himself as the king of the MTV-generation editing junkies with his previous films.

Let's rewind to the year 1994. If anyone had told you that Kevin Smith's breakout hit, Clerks, would be granted a sequel twelve years later---and on top of that, it'd be a romantic comedy---what would you have thought? Looking back at Smith's résumé, though, it almost seems all too obvious: we saw hints at his softer side during Chasing Amy and even Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, not to mention the more down-to-earth Jersey Girl. Smith also dropped hints about a sequel during the past few years, making the tentative release date official in the Clerks 10th Anniversary Edition booklet. So, as surprising as this film's existence is, we still saw it coming.

The Movie:


"John Q" likely gained the interest of director Nick Cassavetes because his daughter has heart trouble and has been in need of medical attention for years. The story also has the potential of providing an interesting perspective on the nation's healthcare system, the subject of constant debate. While the film certainly has a legion of talented actors and a strong director at the helm, the screenplay is really the one element that lets the film down. Instead of providing analysis of healthcare, "John Q" turns into an action movie where it becomes rather difficult to suspend disbelief as the movie pushes forward.

No doubt, the film is dumb. Real dumb. Gas-huffing-Elly-May dumb. But I'll be damned if this uncontainable piece of junk didn't keep me entertained for a whole 78 minutes.

Taking time to order a meal, he finds the consumption of a seafood platter to be a challenge. Just before catching his train, he asks Emil, a Russian film director on his way to be a judge at the Cannes Film festival to use his camcorder to record his boarding, but accidentally causes Emil being left behind at the station. Bean attempts to cheer up the director's son Stepan as the train continues south but matters are made more hectic by the fact that Emil has reported his son to have been kidnapped and Bean losing his wallet and essential travel documents at a pay phone where he and Stepan attempt to contact Emil. Heading in the direction of Cannes, Bean finds himself in the cast and disrupting the flow of a commercial being shot by the egotistical director Carson Clay. He and Stepan finally hitch a ride with the young and vivacious actress Sabine who is heading to Cannes to attend the premiere of Clay's film, in which she appears. He then dares her to see if she can get the true story but is more interested in trying to score with her, which is not easy because she has a boyfriend, who is a snob, and who is not too happy with the amount time she is spending with him. The Movie: "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place" (later just "Two Guys and A Girl") was likely one of the most ripped apart TV shows in the past several years. If there was one good thing in the series, it was Ryan Reynolds, an underrated comic actor who has sense of comedic timing like David Spade with the sarcasm turned down a bit.

A studio finally bought it for $10,000 and tried to turn it into a workable script by several writers and directors. After many failed attempts, it was finally put into the hands of the brilliant Frank Capra and the rest is history. During the commentary track for "Chasing Amy", director Kevin Smith bemoans the fact that, no matter how hard he tries to improve his craft, fans always come up to him and tell him the scenes with Jay and Silent Bob are their favorites. Although things were a little shaky with the protesting over Smith's "Dogma" (which simply stopped the moment the film was released) and the unfortunate failure of the director's cartoon show based upon his first film, "Clerks", it was time to, well, "strike back". According to Smith, it was time to wrap up the "View Askewniverse" that he's built his features thus far upon.

Well, it's taken over 25 years, but someone has finally made a superhero film that surpasses Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie. I should start this review by noting that I wasn't a huge fan of Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man. I thought the first half was very good, but then the second half got over saturated with CGI effects and Willem Dafoe's overacting. Raimi doesn't make the same mistake the second time around. What Raimi (and writers Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and Michael Chabon) understand is that the real story of Spider-Man is Peter Parker, not superpowers and spinning webs. Peter has much more screen time in this movie than his masked alter-ego, and the film is that much better because of it. Don't worry, "True Believers", the action you crave is still there – but its Tobey Maguire's portrayal as Peter than makes Spider-Man 2 soar.

VIDEO QUALITY: Uh, well...I mean, it's "Clerks". If you haven't seen the film before, it's a little black and white film that was made for about $25,000 that went on to become a cult success. The image isn't terribly sharp, but at least it's pleasingly clear. If you've seen the laserdisc version of the film, it looks about the same(literally, it is the same)- but I'll get into that more in the extras section). The black and white image is a little more defined and stronger than the laserdisc, but there's also a noticable amount of artifacts that detract from the enjoyment. The artifacts aren't nearly as bad as another recent release of another small Miramax film, Flirting With Disaster, but they're noticable. There's some problems with the print such as small scratches and a couple of burns in the film that Smith talks about in the commentary. To make a long story short, definitely not flawless- but "Clerks" has never looked this good.

The Movie:

After a few false starts, a law suit, and the attachment then exodus of a couple of 'name' directors (like David Cronenberg and Paul Verhoeven), Michael Caton-Jones, the man behind Doc Hollywood and Rob Roy finally got Sharon Stone's return to slutty form up there on the big screen where it stayed for about a week. Basic Instinct 2 was a flop, it got more bad reviews than you can shake a stick at and it hardly set the box office on fire.

After the events in the first Basic Instinct, female crime writer and psycho-sexual killing machine Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone) has relocated to London, England. When we catch up with her, she and a stoned soccer player are coming back from a party and as they're doing a hundred miles an hour down the street, she decides to have him finger her to a climax. As she gets there, they drive off the road and into the river, he drowns, she makes it out, and finds herself under arrest courtesy of Detective Washburn (David Thewlis).

The court orders her to have a psychiatric evaluation where a shrink named Dr. Michael Glass (David Morrissey) states that she isn't insane but that she is addicted to taking risks. She's released back into the general population, much to Washburn's dismay, but decides that she wants to see more of Dr. Glass and so she coerces him into taking her on as a patient while sleeping with his ex-wife's current boy-toy who, of course, soon winds up a corpse. She shows up at some of the same parties as Glass, who thinks of her when he was rough sex with a waitress (Flora Montgomery) that he picks up one night, and after her head games don't land him in her bed she tells him that she's discontinuing his services, knowing that that'll be enough to spur him on. Is Tramell on a killing spree, pulling the old black widow routine by slicing and dicing whoever should fall into bed with her? Will Dr. Glass be her next victim or is this all an elaborate set up?
