Jennifer Crawford (Embeth Davidtz) has already had a long day of hotel sex with her illicit lover when her husband, an aeronautics engineer named Ted (Anthony Hopkins), corners her into a honey-we-need-to-talk discussion. "I don't think I can do one of these tonight," she says wearily, "one of these" apparently being an intense, unwinnable conversation relating to Ted's emotional neediness. Ted says he loves her; she clearly does not love him back. She loves Rob Nunnally (Billy Burke), her cop boyfriend, and Ted knows about the affair. So Ted shoots her in the head.

Many a film has ended there, but "Fracture," a tauntingly clever cat-and-mouse thriller, uses it as the jumping-off point. Ted the engineer has engineered an elaborate scheme. He knew it would be his wife's lover who would come to the house to arrest him after the gardener heard shots fired, and he knew the fact that the arresting officer was sleeping with the victim would screw things up in court. He's also worked out a very neat trick: Somehow, Ted's gun, the one he shot Jennifer with, the one that was taken from him when he was arrested -- somehow, ballistics reports indicate that gun has never been fired.

Background:

There exists in society a market for just about every type of movie you can imagine,from the silly kiddy fare offered by Disney to the hardest of hardcore offered up by the jaded veterans of Chatsworth, California. Since we all have different levels of expectation and tastes for what we find appealing, your mileage may vary when reading a review because of this. That makes any review suspect since no one can speak to all folks and taking the middle ground all but guarantees the kind of mediocrity you'd expect from one who sits on the fence about everything. Well, today's review of the upcoming release of The Covenant won't be one of those reviews so stick with me for a moment while I explain what type of movie it is, who might like it, and why it works or doesn't work for the supposed market it addresses.

Movie: The Covenant is a movie about a group of gifted teenagers at a high end prep school in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Their families were the founders of the colony hundreds of years ago and the titular covenant was the pact that they made to follow certain rules to keep themselves safe from the puritanical populace in the state. The premise of their gifts is that they are all warlocks, with powers passed down throughout the ages by blood, so the secrets they keep provide them with a measure of security from the mundane mortals that happen to comprise the vast majority of the citizenry. References to Salem's witch hunts are made in the movie and it is clear that secrecy is one of their greatest allies to achieving longevity. So far, so good, right?

The Movie:
Several years ago, director Stanley Kubrick had several projects in development that he was considering. One, "A.I.", certainly had his interest, but he had decided that special effects were not quite to the point that could work for the kind of undertaking that would be required. While he waited, he filmed "Eyes Wide Shut", but unfortunately, passed away shortly after. It turned out though, that during that time, Kubrick was communicating with director Steven Spielberg about having him direct "A.I." instead. The movie is sort of "Pinocchio" crossed with "E.T.", with touches of "Tron", "Blade Runner" and several other pictures. Taking place in the future, global warming has caused the ice caps to melt and oceans have swallowed up any seaside cities (New York, etc). The effects used to create the sunken Manhattan make those of "Deep Impact" look primitive by comparison. During this time, population growth is limited and robots are brought in to fill in the gaps. Professor Hobby (William Hurt), who leads Cybertronics, is able to come up with a prototype robot named David (Haley Joel Osment), a robot child who can actually feel and understand love. The company believes that employee Henry Swinton (Sam Robards) and his wife Monica (Frances O'Connor) are candidates to take care of David, since their only son Martin (Jake Thomas) is critically ill and frozen until a cure for his illness can be found. The company believes that David can be a "substitute" of sorts. Originally, it's Monica who is completely against any such idea and Henry who is positive about the introduction of the boy-bot. As time goes by and Martin gradually makes a suprise recovery though, things slowly change. Monica has gotten used to David and even begun to love him while Henry has grown to distrust the boy. After a particular incident, Monica is forced to take David back - but rather than have him be destroyed by the company he came from, she sets him free in the woods, with only a super-toy stuffed bear called Teddy, who is a real scene-stealer. Anyways, this sequence bridges the gap from what would be considered the first part of the movie into act two. David falls in with a group of robots in the woods who are quickly caught by a group (lead by Brendan Gleeson) who run a "flesh fair" where real humans are entertained by watching robots be destroyed in horrifying ways. David latches onto one of the closest bots, Gigolo Joe (Jude Law, in one of his many terrific performances) and asks for protection. After the audience rises up, David and Joe are allowed to go. David is searching for a mystical creature that can "turn him into a real boy"; I won't give away the exact nature of it.

The Product:
It's the same old story – you can't make crap on purpose. Come to think about it, said statement does need a wee bit of modifying. Yes, you can go out and intentionally create an incredibly awful motion picture experience. You can mess with the narrative, screw up the editing, hire members of your inebriated and inbred family as actors, and generally disregard the very basics of the cinematic language. The results will be atrocious, the kind of disconnected garbage that has no real link to the real world of film. No, what we are really talking about here is the deliberate attempt to make a premeditated cult, camp, kitsch or exploitation epic. You may be able to recapture some of the spirit, but to fully realize the specific genre designs of this manner of surreal schlock is near impossible. Take Pervert! for example. This well meaning sex farce wants desperately to be Far Beyond the Valley of the Psycho-Ultravixens. Even with all the pitfalls facing it, this goofy gratuity almost succeeds.

The Plot:
Returning to his father's desert farm after a semester in college, poor James has a problem. He was so desperate for a date – and a little post-dinner diddling – while doing the University thang that he visited a witch doctor and had a spell placed upon his person. The upside? He's now irresistible to women. The downside? Well, there was a curse involved, and it frequently has a...mind of its own. Anyway, back at Daddy's pad, James discovers that his Pops has blown a gasket. He's shacked up with a stripper from Vegas, and likes to make lifelike human sculptures out of meat. Of course, once exotic eye candy Cheryl sees sonny boy, she makes a beeline for his batch. It's not long before they're sharking up a storm behind the unwitting old man's clueless carcass. One day, Cheryl goes missing. Pops grabs himself another paid paramour – and then she too disappears. James thinks Pops is doing in his pay for play honeys. He even goes so far as to hire a nurse to keep an eye on the old coot. But soon, she's also being plagued by the unbridled terror of James' Haitian hocus pocus. It turns out that the real Pervert! is yet another "member" of the family.

THE MOVIE:

"The type of life being lived, and the quality of the pancakes...."

Stranger Than Fiction was one of my favorite surprises of last year. Sony marketed it as another dumb Will Ferrell vehicle, but the actual movie was a smart metafictional comedy that played with cinematic and literary conventions in quite special ways. In a day and age where every movie is spoiled in the trailer, it's a rare and wonderful thing when the surprises stay hidden and waiting to happen. For once, the marketing may have gotten it wrong, but in all the right ways for guys like me who saw the picture anyway.

Ferrell plays Harold Crick, an IRS-agent whose lonely life is only soothed by his regular cataloguing of the mundane details of his existence. One day, his world is upset by the introduction of a voice in his head. The voice is narrating everything he does, critiquing and turning his every boring action into metaphor and giving an almost anthropomorphic life to Harold's watch. Harold becomes discombobulated by this development, but he tries to soldier on. No one can stop the IRS. Death and taxes are the only inevitable things in life, after all.

As it turns out, Death and Taxes is the name of the book in which Harold is now the unwitting protagonist. It's being written by reclusive author Karen Eiffel (Emma Thompson), and though the IRS part covers the taxes, the death side of things is going to come out of the novel. When Eiffel's authorial voice informs Harold that his demise is imminent, he enlists literature professor Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman) to try to get to the bottom of what is happening to him. Together they try to figure out what kind of story Harold's life is turning into, be it a comedy or a tragedy, and if the plot is something he can take control of or is out of his hands. When it appears that it's the latter, Hilbert suggests that Harold take advantage of the time he has left, and the once meek man sets out to live life to the fullest, attempting all the wild things he was too scared to try previously.

The Movie: "Napoleon Dynamite", without a doubt, presents the geekiest character ever seen on-screen. However, this isn't one of those Hollywood pictures where the geek suddenly transforms at the end and gets asked out by the head cheerleader. This really, really isn't one of those movies. The film stars John Heder as Napoleon, a tall, awkward kid, with a shock of orangish hair, thick glasses and no real idea about how to approach modern society. The majority of the film is pretty uneventful - Napoleon lives on an Idaho farm with his Uncle Rico (Jon Gries), an odd ex-jock who has Al Bundy-like dreams of sports greatness. Also on the farm is his weird older brother, Kip (Aaron Ruell), who spends the majority of his day talking to women in internet chat rooms. Napoleon's only friend is Pedro (Efren Ramirez), who has just arrived in school. Otherwise, Napoleon spends most of his day getting beaten up by those who are bigger than he is, which means...well, just about everyone. Napoleon doesn't have a girlfriend, either, but he does have an interest in Deb (Tina Majorino), who tries to sell things door-to-door to make enough money to go to college. The unexpected occurs when Pedro also starts having an interest and takes Deb to a dance. Pedro also works into Napoleon's plans when he convinces him to run for class president against the popular Summer Wheatly (Hayley Duff).

The Movie:


Based on a popular book I'd never heard of, "Holes" arrived with trailers and advertisements that were noticably vague. Imagine my surprise when the film became one of the year's biggest hits, grossing nearly seventy million dollars. Imagine my further surprise after watching it; this has to be the oddest family fare to ever become such a smash hit, although not nearly the strangest film of the year ("Dreamcatcher" still holds that title).

Stanley Yelnats IV (Shia LaBeouf) is from a cursed family - his father (Henry Winkler) and every male in the family before him suffered from the same run of bad luck. Stanley's troubles occur early in the picture, when he's arrested for stealing a pair of shoes he didn't steal. He's sent off to a camp in the desert, where he befriends the inmates: Zero (Khleo Thomas), Squid (Jake M. Smith), Armpit (Byron Cotton), X-Ray (Brenden Jefferson) and Magnet (Miguel Castro). They all dig holes all day, supposedly to "build character", but obviously for a secret reason the camp's counselors (Jon Voight, Sigorney Weaver and Tim Blake Nelson) are withholding from them.

Once Stanley enters the camp, he finds more about Kissin' Kate Barlow (Patricia Arquette, who looks even better in Western wear), an old-time robber who fell in love with a local admirer (Dule Hill). Unfortunately, their romance was never to be. Her fortune, however, may have been very real. It's to "Holes" credit, however, that it keeps the audience guessing throughout much of its nearly two-hour length. While that may be a little too long for this tale, but director Andrew Davis does keep things moving fairly well. An interesting soundtrack that's a mixture of modern (Beck, Moby) and bluegrass also adds to the mood.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE SOUTH PARK BIGGER LONGER AND UNCUT FROM DVDTALK

Where to begin? Whatever you're expecting from this film before viewing it, throw your notions of what to expect out. Completely. Nothing(and I mean nothing) can prepare you for the sort of stream of agressive profanity that is packed into the 80 minute length of "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut". IN 1995, Kevin Smith fought the MPAA to get "Clerks", the story of a day in the life of two very vulgar convience store clerks, to be released as an "R" instead of NC-17. "Clerks" was very profane, but at the same time, there was a very witty undercurrent to the proceedings. Sitting through "South Park", I can honestly say that the language here makes "Clerks" look positively tame by comparison. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone gleefully push the limits here, packing in what seems like hundreds(possibly thousands, I simply lost count) of the most absolutely raunchy language ever heard on film. The film tries it's hardest to pack in a whole lot in its short length: the famed SP four(Kenny, Cartman, Kyle and Stan) are off to see the new movie by Canadian stars Terrence and Phillip, "Asses Of Fire"(which contains one of the most profane song numbers ever in film). The adults in the audience walk out, but the kids love it(Cartman states, "it warped my fragile little mind"). Soon enough, the kids are spewing four-letter words throughout their school and shocking not only their teachers but their parents. The parents are angered and seek the source of their kids decent into vulgarity: Terrence and Phillip are from Canada so it's decided that the US will not only go to war against Canada, but execute Terrence and Phillip.Meanwhile, poor Kenny has been killed once again, and finds himself in hell. While there, he not only finds Satan and Saddam Hussein having a relationship, but a secret that could cause the end of not only South Park, but the World.

The Movie

For all the couch-jumping craziness, Scientology oddity, creepy romances with budding ingenues and public spankings from corporate overlords, one fact got somewhat lost in the shuffle: Mission: Impossible III (or M:I:III if you're nasty) is a damn fine return to form. The M:I franchise was on life support after John Woo's artful but inert 2000 sequel to Brian De Palma's invigorating 1996 adaptation of the Sixties TV classic, one of the better films of the Nineties. Overblown and drained of any real spy-centric sequences, Mission: Impossible II often felt like a trailer in search of a film; Cruise's sizzle-less chemistry with Thandie Newton, that absurdly protracted fist-fight between Cruise and the bland Dougray Scott, as well as a needlessly overheated plot didn't exactly help matters either.

Some time away from the material seems to have rejuvenated both Cruise and the creative team — after cycling through a series of directors who came close to pulling the trigger but ultimately walked away (including David Fincher and Joe Carnahan), Cruise ingeniously tapped "Felicity," "Alias" and "Lost" mastermind J.J. Abrams to overhaul the ailing series and start fresh, from both a screenplay and directorial standpoint. It's a move that worked, but in all of Cruise's self-sabotaging PR bumbles, might have been obscured — fortunately, now that much of the TomKat madness has subsided, Mission: Impossible III can be appreciated for what it is: a top-shelf Hollywood summer blockbuster, served up with panache and wit and featuring one of the more chillingly realized villains of 2006, Owen Davian (played with obvious relish by Capote Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman).

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE OFFICE SPACE FROM DVD TALK.

The Movie:

"Office Space" was released in the early weeks of 1999 with little fanfare and not much advertising. The movie was quickly bumped out of theaters and ended up with a gross of a little over $10m. The movie then became an enormous hit on DVD, and the cult following the film has attracted has only grown since.

Directed by Mike Judge ("Beavis and Butthead"), "Space" stars Ron Livington as Peter, a worker at a generic tech company as software engineers. He's introduced in the middle of morning traffic, veering between lanes to try and get ahead, but only finding himself still locked in the bumper-to-bumper traffic. Looking over to the side of the road, he spots an old man with a walker who looks like he's getting to his destination faster than Peter is. Once he arrives at work, he is told by three different managers that he forgot to add the new cover letter to his report.

Deeply dismayed with his current employment ("I was sitting in my cubicle today and realized that every single day of my life has worse than the day before it, so every single day that you see me is on the worst day of my life."), he eventually agrees to see an occupational therapist recommended by his irritable girlfriend. When the therapist has a heart attack in the middle of the treatment, Peter has something of a "break" - he decides to persue his dreams of doing nothing ("I did absolutely nothing, and it was everything I thought it could be.") He sleeps late, doesn't come in on weekends if he's asked, and tries to romance the waitress (Jennifer Aniston) at the chain restaurant next door. He's not going to quit - he's just going to essentially stop going.

Meanwhile, "consultants" have been brought in, and everyone knows they're there to decide who stays and who goes. Peter, who strolls in without a care, ends up managing to impress them enough not only to not fire him, but to actually give him a promotion. Despite that, Peter and friends Michael (David Herman), and Samir (Ajay Naidu) decide to go ahead with a plan to take money from the company through a program that will take off little bits of change from every transaction. Needless to say, it doesn't go according to plan.

Full of quotable lines and hilarious moments, "Office Space" gets all the details right and the laughs do often operate on the fact that almost everyone finds themselves at a job like this at one time or another (I once worked at an office doing data entry and no one really told me what to do. While I worked there for an entire Summer, I didn't find out until the last day that I had been doing an aspect of the job wrong for months. Every day, every one went to their cubicle and there was barely any communication.) However, the film's spin on office culture is funny and sharply realized, with "we all have wanted to it at one time or another" moments like when the three take the troublesome printer out behind the office and destroy it. The film's use of rap music is also nothing short of priceless.

The performances are terrific, as well. Gary Cole's boss is a classic character, droning out every word of every sentence and offering a flat, insincere thanks when he snares someone to come in to work additional hours on the weekend. Livington is a great "everyguy", and Naidu and Herman are superb as his co-workers. Aniston makes something out of a pretty minimal part, and convincingly plays an average girl tired of having to wear "flair" on her uniform at the restaurant. Finally, Stephen Root ("Newsradio") is amusing as quiet, mumbling worker Milton (the film is based on Judge's "Milton" animated shorts).

"Office Space" is shot in a pretty minimalist way by Judge (his first live-action effort), but the characters and dialogue work supremely well and absolutely carry the movie.


The DVD

VIDEO: "Office Space" is presented by Fox in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen (the previous DVD edition was non-anamorphic), "Office Space" still isn't the strongest movie visually, but the picture quality is noticably better this time around. Sharpness and detail are improved, as the picture appeared consistently more detailed and crisp this time around.

Additionally, the picture looks smoother and more "film like" here, with no edge enhancement, pixelation or shimmering. There are some moments where some minor specks are spotted on the print, but these are pretty minor and not distracting. Colors appeared somewhat richer here, and black level looked solid. Overall, while the prior release didn't look too bad, I was pleased to see that this new transfer does certainly look better.

SOUND: "Office Space" is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. This is the same audio presentation as the prior release. Largely a "comedy"-style presentation, the majority of the audio comes from the front speakers, with the surrounds only providing minimal reinforcement. The rap songs on the soundtrack deliver some solid bass, but otherwise this is a fairly straightforward, dialogue-driven audio presentation.

EXTRAS: "Out of the Office" is a nearly 30-minute "look back" documentary that has Judge and the cast talking about their thoughts on the film, their characters and working on the film. It's only in the last quarter of the documentary that we learn more about things like a potential PG-13 rating, the popular Swingline stapler, and the reaction to the movie. The featurette does have some fun interviews with the cast and a few insights, but there's a lot of time spent on praising each other and quite a few movie clips added in. Some outtakes from John C. McGinley are also added in during his segment, and are quite funny.

Also offered here are eight deleted scenes presented in rough form, with no optional commentary. Some of the scenes are quite funny, and I thought a couple should have been included in the movie. There's also the trailer, and some additional DVD-ROM content (audio clips, an interactive game, wallpaper, screensaver and more.)

Final Thoughts: "Office Space" remains a smart and hilarious office comedy, with great performances and memorable characters and dialogue. Fox's new Special Edition doesn't offer much in the way of supplements (a commentary from Judge or the cast would have been nice), but image quality does get a boost here.

For kicks, a group of millionaires (Eddie Griffin, Angus Macfayden, and Tim Matheson) gather together to bet on illegal races using their collection of exotic cars. Natasha (Nadia Bjorlin) is a singer with a racing past who unexpectedly gets caught up in this pastime and she wants out. With the help of Iraq vet Carlos (Nathan Phillips, "Wolf Creek"), Natasha attempts to tamper with the race results to best exact revenge on one of the tycoons who has threatened her family.

"Redline" is perhaps the most obvious vanity film of the last decade. Even the worst projects from Hollywood's A-list couldn't compare with the ballooned ego of this movie. It's a motion picture literally built around the display of fancy cars, with minimal attention to plot or performance. Sure, the same could be said of its forefather, 2001's "Fast and the Furious," but even that piece of junk had some production value. "Redline" is a direct-to-knucklehead release that refuses to bow out gracefully.

The Movie

On the surface, The Incredibles is a superhero movie, but in truth, it's a movie about superheroes. It's a small difference, but an important one. Sure, there are big superhero battles, villains and the usual comic-book trappings, but those are just part of the story. The more important aspects are the family interaction, the struggles of being different and being true to one's self. That may sound like an afterschool special, but in the hands of the Pixar storytellers, they are the hallmarks of a film classic.

The plot follows the life of Bob Parr ("Coach"'s Craig T. Nelson), an insurance company worker, who at one point was Mr. Incredible, a super-strong defender of innocent people. Then a few lawsuits started a crackdown on superheroes, forcing him into seclusion, so he married a fellow hero, Helen, a.k.a. Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), and settled into suburban life. Now, he's going through a super-midlife crisis, missing his days as someone special; someone who made a difference. While his wife has adjusted to being a mom swimmingly, Bob is bored and frustrated, much like his kids, Dash and Violet, who don't understand why they have to keep their own powers secret.

With his friend Lucius (Samuel L. Jackson), who was once the icy hero Frozone, Bob tries to keep his skill sharp, listening to the police scanner and responding first. His actions draw the attention of a shadowy operative who has an offer Bob can't refuse, or rather wouldn't want to. He's also drawn the attention of someone from his past who isn't on friendly terms. Bob might be in over his head, and his family are the only ones that can help him. The final hour of the film is almost non-stop action, with some truly incredible and well-choreographed set pieces that are thrilling and exciting.

The Movie:
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith", while not flawless (and not "Grosse Pointe Blank"), is a feature that works well despite the realization as the credits roll that there's not a great deal to it. Of course, everyone knows by now that stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are a couple, the mere fact of which has somehow managed to be covered in every single edition of every single tabloid in every single country. The film, from "Bourne Identity" director Doug Liman, stars Pitt and Jolie as Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a suburban couple who lives in a large, beautiful and ultra-modern house on a quiet street. The two met cute and got married, despite keeping a rather large secret from one another - that both are actually assassins who are working for rival organizations. The marriage has obviously cooled over the years, and now discussions over decorations and minor dinner changes are the only thing keeping things from falling into uncomfortable silences. Things get nasty, however, when the two are sent in on the same job - an operative (Adam Brody, from "The O.C.") and find that their cover has been blown by the person they'd have least expected. From there, "Smith" turns into a more violent "War of the Roses" as the two, despite still being together, wage war on each other in their suburban estate. However, when it becomes clear that their bosses want them eliminated, they realize they have to turn to each other.

The last time we encountered the guys and gals of the "Ocean" films they were stuck in a hepcat paralysis. 2004's "Ocean's Twelve" wasn't a disastrous picture, but it was a cataclysmic mistake in execution, stripping away the friendly magnetism of "Ocean's Eleven" to pursue an insidery tone that felt exclusionary and humorless. From the introductory ribbons of colors backing the main titles, it's obvious "Ocean's Thirteen" is here to say "I'm sorry" to anyone who was shut out of the merriment last time around.

Willie Bank (Al Pacino) is a ruthless Vegas casino owner bent on buying up the strip. When Bank screws over business partner Rueben Tishkoff (Elliot Gould), Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and his boys (including Brad Pitt and Matt Damon) are herded in to even the score for the ailing old-school casino czar. Using careful planning and research, the team hopes to disrupt the grand opening of Bank's latest gambling palace. But, as with any revenge scheme, not everything goes smoothly.

"Ocean's Thirteen" won't tax your senses. Steven Soderbergh's latest caper isn't intended to wow with complexity or depth; it's more a ride down the scenic cinematic highway with the top down and the music blasting. It plays it safe, perhaps too safe for more demanding attention spans, but it does so with a jubilant charisma and enough neon-infused spirit to make it impossible to hate.

The Movie

It'd be far too easy to dismiss Antoine Fuqua's Shooter as mindless multiplex mayhem. Disguised as a gory B-movie light on coherent plot and heavy on bad-ass action, there's actually something a bit more subversive at work in this pseudo-Death Wish for the Dubya administration. You have to wonder just how many popcorn-munchers caught on to the not-so-thinly-veiled caricatures of America's governmental elite. It's a tactic (not having read Washington Post film critic Stephen Hunter's novel upon which Fuqua's film is based, adapted here by Jonathan Lemkin, it's hard to know just how much politically charged material already existed) that elevates and makes more timely a film that would otherwise be nothing more than a straight-to-video snooze.

Oliver Stone never does anything by half. In each of his films, from Platoon to Wall Street, JFK to Nixon, he always seeks to make THE definitive movie on any given topic. Even though his main focus has been on the Viet Nam war, its aftermath, and the culture that grew up around it, his other films have been equally grandiose. That's why it's no surprise that his football epic, Any Given Sunday includes everything but the kitchen sink. His other recent off-topic film, U-Turn, sought to include every twist-and-turn available to films noir in the Detour vein, and Any Given Sunday doesn't skip anything either. On-field drama, back-room business deals, medical shenanigans, locker room trash-talking, media braggery, sexual tomfoolery, coke snorting, and just about everything else (except, perhaps, a steroid scandal) is pulled out to define football as, predictably, the gladiatorial sport of our times (or rather, as one player puts it while watching Charlton Heston in Ben Hur, those were the gladiators of THEIR time).

Any Given Sunday, which follows a difficult half-season for the fictional Miami Sharks, reminded me of an overstuffed meatball hero: full of balls, a lot of fun, but in the end, maybe a little too much meat and not enough nutrition. From the opening shot (a huge close-up of a football shot like a 2001 monolith), Stone is reverent of the game itself and what he perceives as the ideals of team play, of glory, of awe in the physical achievements of other men. He reins in his visual style for most of the movie (well, reined in for Stone) so that we can really appreciate the movement of the players and the bone-crunching hits they take. The games are very cinematic; He approaches the opening moments like it's D-Day and he's Steven Spielberg. When a player more used to warming the bench steps onto the field for the first time the disorientation he feels is palpable. You can tell that he never expected the field to feel so different during game-time.

The Movie

To paint An Inconvenient Truth as anything less than what it is -- a near clarion call to action -- would be to slight former Vice President of the United States Al Gore's seemingly indefatigable need to alert everyone within earshot of his voice about the mounting dangers of global warming. Why this film, directed by Davis Guggenheim, succeeds where so many others have fallen short, is that Gore never strikes the viewer as anything other than rational, collected and impassioned. He's not alarmist, he's not half-crazed about melting glaciers or raging forest fires -- he's merely sad and determined, armed with facts and figures and set upon making some sort of positive impact.

With a relentless torrent of scientific data at his fingertips (and a "Futurama" clip or two), broken down into easily digestible and understood chunks, Gore lays out the past, present and downright harrowing future of our globe, as it continues to reel from the effects of our callous hyper-consumption. One chilling statistic after another (often backed up with stunning photographic evidence) piles up until you're left, shaken and unnerved, as the credits roll, listing several ways you yourself can engage in making a difference.

Woven into the fabric of An Inconvenient Truth is an informal biography of Gore himself, following his journey from the family farm in Tennessee to the halls of power in Washington to his globe-trotting adventures as an eco-missionary. These interludes punctuate his presentation, offering respite from the dizzying amount of information, but also deftly providing insight into why he pursues this avocation so devotedly. It's a trick that could've very well failed, dragging down the otherwise essential message of An Inconvenient Truth, but Guggenheim seamlessly integrates this necessary information into his overall narrative.
