DISTURBIA NOW ONLINE

DISTURBIA IS NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

This movie is about a boy who is played by Shia Labuf who gets into trouble and gets put on house arrest for the summer. While being on house arrest he sees what he thinks are murders and then trys to stop the murder from committing more murders.

HERE IS THE SUMMARY FROM IMDB OF THE MOVIE DISTURBIA

After his father is killed in a car accident, things unravel for Kale Brecht and he is placed under house-arrest for punching his Spanish teacher. Having nothing better to do, Kale occupies himself by spying on his neighbors. But one night, he witnesses what appears to be a murder going on in Mr. Turner's house. Kale becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind these murders but, after a few unsettling run-ins with Mr. Turner, it becomes a matter of life and death. And the ominous question: Who is watching who? Written by O.G.

After his father's death, Kale Brecht becomes sullen, withdrawn, and troubled -- so much so that he finds himself under a court-ordered sentence of house arrest after a run in with the law. His mother, Julie, works night and day to support herself and her son, only to be met with indifference and lethargy. The walls of his house begin to close in on Kale. He becomes a voyeur as his interests turn outside the windows of his suburban home towards those of his neighbors, one of which Kale begins to suspect is a serial killer. But, are his suspicions merely the product of cabin fever and his overactive imagination? Written by Anonymous

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE DISTURBIA BY DVDTALK

"Disturbia" is a low-cal version of "Rear Window." Good, now that the movie fan inside of me has established the obvious, here's the truth: it's a really ho-hum, patchy rip-off of "Rear Window" that has more in common with John Hughes than Alfred Hitchcock.

After witnessing his father's death, Kale (Shia LeBeouf) is left a wounded soul. Having clocked his Spanish teacher in a split-second moment of disrespect, Kale is convicted of assault and placed under house arrest. Over the course of the summer, Kale builds his own world up in his room, observing the neighbors engaging in their daily activities, including new addition Ashley (a lifeless Sarah Roemer). Together the two spy the behavior of Turner (David Morse), a sketchy fellow who Kale believes might be responsible for a series of unsolved murders.

"Disturbia," for all its pulse-quickening intentions, is really more of a comedy than a thriller. Director D.J. Caruso ("Two for the Money," "Taking Lives," "The Salton Sea") is searching for a mixture of wacky teen skepticism and taught suspense machinations. It's a risky brew, and I was never convinced that the filmmaker held a firm grasp on the picture's tone. The first two acts are devoted almost entirely to Kale's puttering around and restricted voyeurism, with little effort made to thread in the required haunting overtones.

The picture just spins its wheels while it waits for Kale's charms and comical neighborhood watch to sink in with the audience. This would be much more easily accomplished if writers Christopher B. Landon and Carl Ellsworth (who wrote the invigorating "Red Eye," making this miss a huge question mark) invested more into ratcheting up Kale's frustrations and stagnancy. Instead, the writers water down the material to best match their intended teen audience (at one point, a flaming bag of dog feces works its way into the script), and pencil in a romance between Kale and Ashley that would hold more authenticity as Penthouse Letter.

During this time, Caruso leaves it up to LeBeouf to do whatever he wants with the character, and I use that term loosely. While I've been impressed with LeBeouf in the past, "Disturbia" comes the closest to revealing the young actor as a one-trick-pony, regurgitating his Vegas routine of snarky attitude and line-stepping improvisation to a point of exhaustion. LeBeouf doesn't attempt to find Kale a personality worthy of a lead performance; he essentially plays himself.

What makes Kale tick is never explained by the production. One minute, the kid is a bleary-eyed Xbox addict building Twinkie castles and the next he's an electronic MacGyver designing complex camera equipment for his constipated reconnaissance missions. I suppose in the larger scheme of things, questions of character depth and logic are best left for a more intelligent picture.

If LeBeouf doesn't amp disinterest in "Disturbia's" shenanigans, the critical casting mistake of David Morse might prompt even more violent eye-rolling. The hulking character actor portrays the mystery of the moment in the film; a man the script insists on suggesting holds an ambiguity that isn't supposed to payoff until the final moment. Putting Morse in this position is the worst casting decision the film makes (I write that knowing full well that Sarah Roemer is in the movie as well). Was Freddy Krueger on vacation? Michael Myers not taking calls? Part of the supposed "fun" of "Disturbia" is guessing if Turner is a menace or just misunderstood. With Morse in the role, the work has already been done for the viewer.

When the time comes for the film to go haywire, there's such a threadbare amount of interest left that Caruso has no alternative but to amp the violence and grisly details in a way that hints perhaps the PG-13 rating branded onto "Disturbia" was bought instead of awarded. The climax gets lurid to cheaply hold attention, pushing suspense buttons left and right. Not everything in the film's closer is worthy of dismissal Caruso does pull off some nicely executed shots but the panic comes too late, and without a decent set-up to work the audience into a lather, kicking the door down on any type of darkness comes off as pathetic, not entertaining.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE FINAL DESTINATION 3 DVDTALK

The Movie:

The Final Destination films are easy to dismiss as post-Scream teens in peril slasher films but whereas most of the films that ripped off Wes Craven's self referential ghost faced killer movie played it safe, James Wong and company have consistantly shown that they're not afraid to accent their movies with healthy doses of gore, gore, and more gore courtesy of some of the most creative kill scenes in the history of the sub-genre that is the slasher film.

This third film in the series, subtitled Thrill Ride, begins with an impressive sequence wherein a whole lot of people are slaughtered when a roller coaster accident causes things to go horribly wrong. Cut to Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a pretty teenage girl who may or may not be able to see into the future a bit. When she starts to realize that the pictures she took the other night of her friends at the amusement park are actually clues as to how they're all going to die, she and her friend Kevin (Ryan Merriman) try to save their pals before it's too late.

Of course, as Wendy and Kevin travel around town trying to warn their fellow teenagers, they too put their lives in danger and as luck would have it, they're always a little bit too late to save anyone either that or they're met with a 'you so crazy' look. Regardless, the end result is the same in that the teens are getting knocked off one by one in typically gruesome fashion.

Final Destination 3 is not a deep film. It's not particularly well acted, it's not all that original, and it isn't even really doing anything all that different within the limited confines of the slasher sub-genre. What the movie is, however, is fun! It's gory for the sake of being gory, the nudity is there to add nothing other than a naked lady factor and the plot, as disjointed and unrealistic as it is, exists primarily to string us along from one murder set piece to the next. The first two films did it, and this third one doesn't even try to deviate from that successful formula this movie gives the fans what they want and what they want is gore and tits. Lose your brain at the door on the way in and enjoy the ride. Thinking too much will hurt your head but if you're able to just accept the movie for what it is you're bound to have a good time.

The kill scenes in the film are so completely preposterous that the whole thing has a very over the top and almost cartoonish vibe running throughout. There's a nice sense of dark humor to the proceedings and the way that the photographs hint at the upcoming deaths that we know are going to hit us upside the head like a 2x4 keep you guessing pretty much from the start. This results in a fairly suspenseful picture in that we know these kids are going to get it, in fact we want them to, and the question lies not in 'will they die' so much as 'how will the die?' As far as the answer to that goes, well, the deaths are the best part of the film and they won't be spoiled in this review but let it suffice to say that they do not disappoint. While there might have been a shade more blood in the second film than this one, the sheer creativity of these scenes in this film warrants a look, and in many spots they almost resemble a game of Mousetrap in the way that they're planned out, or even a game of dominos..

The DVD

Video:

Aside from some expected instances of grain in a few of the darker scenes and one or two instances were some mild mpeg compression artifacts were visible, New Line's 2.35.1 anamorphic widescreen transfer for Final Destination 3 looks great. Flesh tones appear lifelike and natural, color reproduction is very strong, and black levels remain constant and deep. Fine detail in both the foreground and the background of the image looks nice and sharp and there were only faint instances of aliasing and edge enhancement present on the picture that were just barely noticeable from time to time.

Sound:

New Line has provided audio options in both Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS 6.1 Surround Sound with optional subtitles available in English and Spanish as well and with an English closed captioning option. If you've got the hardware to make it happen, the DTS track does have the slight edge over the 5.1 for the simple reason that the bass is stronger and the rear portion is filled in more. Either way, however, you'll find little to complain about here with either choice as both tracks provide plenty of nice bass response where appropriate, clear dialogue, and nice directional effects throughout. The film score is tight and bouncy and neither the music nor the effects ever over power the performers. There were one or two scenes in the film where the surrounds could have been used a little more effectively but other than that, this disc sounds excellent.

Extras:

With a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound mix and a rather large DTS 6.1 mix on disc one there wasn't a whole lot of room left for extras but there are two interesting supplements to be found on the first disc in this two disc set:

The main extra feature on this release and the biggest pull in terms of supplements is that option to watch the movie using the Choose Their Fate which, when enabled, allows you to by way of your remote control, choose what the characters do next. If you choose correctly, they'll live, and if not, well, you know what happens to teenagers in the Final Destination films by now and let's just say that it isn't pretty. Interestingly enough, if you choose correctly for a few of the scenes, you'll find yourself ending the movie before it would end in its theatrical version but you'll also be treated to a few alternate scenes in which the characters resolve things. This might sound like a rather ridiculous idea but it's actually pretty fun. It's not likely to be something that you're going to go back to time and time again but it is an interesting alternate way to enjoy and to a certain extent participate in the carnage that the movie delivers in spades. The drawback to this feature is that when you watch the movie in its regular version, you might notice a hiccup or two similar to a layer change during playback where, in the Choose Their Fate version, there would be a prompt. The intensity of these little hiccups varied on the two different players that I tried this one, with one reacting to them more harshly than the other.

Also included on the first disc is a full length director's commentary track with James Wong who is joined by screenwriter Glen Morgan and the director of photography, Robert McLachlan. Aside from a few spots of dreaded dead air, this is a pretty lively track that contains a good amount of information. Wong dominates the discussion, which makes sense as he had more to do with the final product but all three get their points across. These guys seem to have had a fun time working on the project and they come across as genuinely intelligent types with a true love for what they're doing and a nice, playful sense of humor. No one is taking the movie too seriously here and they know what kind of movie they've made but they still manage to discuss the film in an interesting and smart manner.

Disc two contains the rest of the supplements that starts off with a truly unusual seven minute cartoon called It's All Around You that explains some of the ways that people deal with having to accept the inevitable fact that death comes for us all. This is a pretty strange supplement but that being said it fits the tone of the movie well when you consider how much of the film is made up of the characters wigging out about the fact that they cannot escape their predetermined fate as predicted by the photographs.

A great twenty four minutes documentary entitled Dead Teenager Movie takes a look at the teen slasher phenomena by way of some amusing criticisms and observations, many of which are courtesy of the one and only Roger Ebert who used the titular phrase when describing the first film in his Chicago Sun review years back. Of course, this being a Final Destination movie a lot of the focus is geared towards the three films in the series and to writer/direction James Wong but that doesn't really diminish the fact that this is a surprisingly enjoyable examination of the slasher genre and the roles that teenagers inevitably always find themselves playing in it.

The mother of all supplements on the second disc comes in the form of the massive Kill Shot: Making Final Destination 3 documentary that clocks in at just a couple of minutes under an hour and a half, roughly the same length as the feature itself! By way of interviews with all of the principal players involved both in front of and behind the camera and a wealth of behind the scenes footage, this segment gives us a very detailed look at the way that the movie was made from start to finish from the script to post production tweaking. We learn how some of the effects work was done, how the movie was cast, where some of the ideas for a few of the more interesting scenes came from and what Wong wanted to do this third time out with the Franchise. New Line gives you the option of watching this mammoth piece in different sections (ten in total) or as one big super-documentary. Casual fans might find themselves skimming through it or fast forwarding in spots as it gets to be overkill almost in spots but for the dedicated Final Destination fans, this is heaven.

The last feature is called Severed Piece and like the Kill Shot documentary that came before it you can watch it in individual chunks or all at once, though this time out it adds up to about thirteen minutes of footage when it's all said and done. This section narrows down to a few specific aspects of the production, mainly effects work, pyrotechnics, miniatures and gore effects. Those who dig the 'how did they do that' aspect of filmmaking should enjoy this as it proves to be pretty interesting.

Rounding out the extra features on this release is an extended version of the scene at the police station, a couple of trailers and TV spots for the film, trailers for a few other New Line genre releases, animated menus, chapter stops, and for those who happen to be DVD-Rom equipped there's computer accessible goodies hidden away on the disc as well. It's all packaged in a two disc keepcase with a slipcase that fits on over top of it all.

Final Thoughts:

So Final Destination 3 isn't reinventing the wheel, who cares! It gives us exactly what we'd expect from the third film in the series some amazingly creative kill scenes, gore galore, gratuitous nudity and some twisted black humor. The story is a little kooky in spots but the movie delivers in the violence department and let's face it: that's what has made these films so popular in the first place. New Line's two-disc set looks and sounds great and has some excellent extras as well. Recommended.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE RUSH HOUR 3 FROM DVDTALK

The "Rush Hour" films have become the cinematic equivalent of candy. To some, the gorging can be nauseating; for me, these action tangents have been welcome fluff in an industry of hard edges. "Rush Hour 3" isn't going to encourage intelligence anytime soon, but if you have a soft spot for silly adventure, it's a fine selection of wacky-go-boom.

When an important Chinese government figure is nearly assassinated, Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) desperately follows the clues to the heart of a criminal empire. Tagging along is Lee's pal Carter (Chris Tucker), who craves the excitement. The journey takes them to Paris, where Carter and Lee quickly find themselves in over their heads dealing with Triad complications (Hiroyuki Sanada), a mysterious nightclub performer (Noemie Lenior), and a bureaucrat (Max von Sydow) who wants this case put to bed quickly.

The quality of the "Rush Hour" films always depends on to the potency of the material. 2001's "Rush Hour 2" was a near-perfect realization of the formula, lurching through expansive set-pieces like a steamroller and exploiting the cultural friction between Tucker and Chan to comedy gold. It was a popcorn enterprise of the highest order, miles ahead of 1998's "Hour 1."

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE CLICK FROM DVDTALK

The Movie
Adam Sandler isn't exactly what audiences consider a leading man, but they'll watch him take a kick to the crotch any day. It's the problem successful comics always face, and one Sandler is already familiar with, after the weak reaction his serious turn in Punch Drunk Love received. Moviegoers simply have their expectations of actors, and hate when they aren't met.

Click isn't quite a Merchant Ivory movie, but it's certainly not Little Nicky either. It's the latest in Sandler's transformative phase, which has seen him make good films (Spanglish), OK films (Anger Management) and awful films (The Longest Yard), in an effort to stretch beyond his usual clowning. Here, as family man Michael Newman, he straddles the line, with lots of the frat-boy silliness that made him a star, and a healthy dose of heartbreaking drama.

Michael is an architect trying to make partner at his firm by doing everything his asinine boss (David Hasselhoff) asks of him. As a result, he works overtime constantly, on holidays and weekends, and has no time for his wife Donna (the lovely Kate Beckinsale), or his two kids. Some late-night TV difficulties catches this stressed-out guy at the wrong moment, sending him to Bed, Bath and Beyond looking for a remote to replace the various clickers that are driving him crazy. There, in the "Beyond" section, he meets Morty (Christopher Walken), who has a unique universal remote for him. This remote programs itself, but that's not all it does, as Michael soon learns, while muting his dog and then fast-fowarding through his "business."

Owning a remote that controls his life (with some features that DVD fans will absolutely appreciate), quickly becomes addictive, and Michael skips through anything that bothers or annoys him. Unfortunately for him, the remote becomes programmed as to what annoys him, and he begins missing chunks of his life. It's classic "watch what you wish for"storytelling , as the remote takes over and he ends up clicking past the biggest moments in life. It's a pretty good metaphor for modern life, as this technological convenience, which is suppose to make life easier and give us more time ends up eating up more of it.

As stated before, you expect comedy from Sandler, and there's a great deal of it, including the requisite farts and kids cursing, which is admittedly amusing. But for most of the film, Michael is a pathetic character, whose life is going on without him, leaving him lost in his own body. Though his daughter's continued physical development is played for laughs, his absence in their lives is not, and it's frequently harrowing, no matter how many gags are shoehorned in. As the father of a newborn, whom I see only early in the morning and late when I get home, the film often tugged at my heartstrings, getting me to the verge of tears, and at times pushing me over the cliff. It's impressive when schmaltzy moments like those in this film actually get a reaction from a cynic like me.

Sandler is his usual solid self, playing the everyBuffoon with his typical ease, while Walken is at his odd best, pushing his halting delivery to the extreme, creating a very unusual character. Few other players get to do much of anything in this very Sandler-focused story, though Julie Kavner and Henry Winkler are highly entertaining as Michael's kvetching parents, while Winkler gets to be the catalyst to one of the most emotional scenes in the movie. You'd have to be pretty cold to not be moved by the concept, if not the execution. I never thought I'd be touched by a Sandler movie, but this one did it.

The DVD
This one-disc release is packed in a standard keepcase with a promotional insert and a three-dollar coupon good on select Sony DVDs. The keepcase is inside a slipcover that repeats the cover art, which is one of the most plain pieces of cover art I've seen in a long time. Why we needed to see it twice is beyond all logic. The disc has an animated anamorphic widescreen main menu, based off the life menus in the film, with options to play the film, adjust languages, select scenes and check out special features. Audio options include English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks, while subtitles are available in English and French, along with English closed captioning.

The Quality
The anamorphic widescreen transfer on this DVD is very nice, though it feels a bit dark throughout the film. The colors are solid, especially during the scenes set in the future, where lots of special effects are used along with plenty of neon lights. The level of detail is consistently high, to the point where you can see the separation between the visual effects and real film in spots, and there's not a bit of noticeable dirt or damage, nor any obvious digital artifacts.

For a dialogue-driven comedy/drama, the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is surprisingly active, with a good deal of movement in the surrounds, where atmospheric noises and music enhancements boost up the sound. Some heavy bass kicks in with the special effects, and the dialogue is crisp and clean. It's a pretty impressive mix.

The Extras
There's a couple of extras included on this disc, starting with a feature-length audio commentary featuring Sandler, director Frank Coraci and a few of their buddies from the film. It's a classic group track, with everyone trying to get in on the action, but Sandler is surprisingly adept at acting as moderator, asking questions that spur the commentary on, and pointing out interesting on-set stories. It's a solid, informative bonus feature that you might not expect.

Seven short featurettes make up the bulk of the remaining extras, and run a combined 31 minutes. They cover mostly production topics, like the film's design and special effects, and do a good job of showing how some of the effects were achieved. They're followed by four deleted scenes can be viewed separately or all together, three of which are mildly amusing. None of them would make the film any better through.

The disc finishes with an insane 17 trailers, none of which are Click.

The Bottom Line It's just barely an entertaining film, as it spends so much time bumming the audience out, but it's definitely an interesting one, as the concept is handled better than one might expect. It's closer to a chick flick than a Sandler film, as the moralizing is far from subtle and the sadness piles on in heaps, so tread carefully when approaching the DVD. An excellent audio and video presentation joins with a view extras to make this worthy of a purchase if you enjoy the film. A cross-promotion with a tissue company would have been nice though.

Marty, a boy of the 80's, has to come to grips with being in the 50's and get his parents to fall in love to set straight the damage his presence has done to the events of the past. Marty McFly, a typical American teenager of the Eighties, is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a plutonium-powered DeLorean "time machine" invented by slightly mad scientist. During his often hysterical, always amazing trip back in time, Marty must make certain his teenage parents-to-be meet and fall in love -- so he can get back to the future. HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE BACK TO THE FUTURE FROM DVDTALK

The Movie: One of the most beloved films of the 1980s, "Back to the Future" was one of the films I remember most from my childhood. While the second and third films were not quite as memorable, all three were compelling adventures for all ages - really the kind of upbeat, entertaining films that aren't made much anymore (see also "The Goonies", which came out the same year). Although I doubt there are many who haven't seen this picture already, but to discuss the story: Fox stars as Marty McFly, a teenager (I bought Fox as a teenager when I first saw this film, I don't think I really do watching it again after all these years) who is friends with the town's crazy inventor, Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd, in his best performance). Brown requests his presence in the local mall parking lot at 1:15 in the morning. Once there, Doc reveals what he's been working on recently - a time machine that happens to be made out of a De Lorean. After a test run with the Doc's dog as the sole passenger, Marty finds himself jumping into the vehicle to escape the terrorists who Doc tricked to get the radioactive fuel for his machine. Once Marty hits the gas and reaches 88, he finds himself in November of 1955, with no way to get home. Unfortunately for Marty, he's got other problems: he finds that he's got to be the one who causes his parents to meet, which won't be easy - it's not long into the past before he accidentially breaks up a potential meet. Of course, if he parents never meet, he can never be born - a fact that he's reminded of constantly as a photograph of his brother, his sister and himself is becoming progessively less populated.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE DADDY DAY CAMP FROM DVDTALK

If you've chosen to watch "Daddy Day Camp," I assume it is because you are a fan of two things: "Daddy Day Care," the 2003 film to which it is a sequel; and bodily functions. If you are indifferent toward those two things, then I cannot urge you in strong enough terms to avoid "Daddy Day Camp." But if you do love those things, then boy howdy, are you ever in for a treat. "Daddy Day Camp" has a naked boy peeing into a toilet while scratching his butt, and a man accidentally eating a bug that was graphically smashed onto a barbecued hamburger patty, all before the opening credits are even finished! From there it is a long, messy ride through scene after scene of farting, peeing, vomiting, and pooping. The screenplay is attributed to three writers. That means if the film's funny parts were divided evenly among them, they each wrote zero. The film answers the question "How bad does a sequel have to be for Eddie Murphy to want nothing to do with it?" He starred, with rotund comedian Jeff Garlin, in the 2003 family flick about two dads who start a daycare center. But neither man was interested in the sequel, so they've been replaced with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Paul Rae ... who are playing the same characters. Not the original characters' brothers, or two different characters in a similar situation, but the same characters. I guess the thinking was that as long as they had a Black Guy and a Fat White Guy, no one would notice the difference. They could just as easily have gotten Martin Lawrence and George Wendt, or Chris Tucker and James Gandolfini. (Actually, I would watch that movie.)

The prosecutor is Willy Beachum, a hotshot who's soon to join a fancy civil-law firm, told by everyone it's an open and shut case. Crawford sees Beachum's weakness, the hairline fracture of his character: Willy's a winner. The engineer sets in motion a clockwork crime with all the objects moving in ways he predicts. HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE FRACTURE FROM DVDTALK

Jennifer Crawford (Embeth Davidtz) has already had a long day of hotel sex with her illicit lover when her husband, an aeronautics engineer named Ted (Anthony Hopkins), corners her into a honey-we-need-to-talk discussion. "I don't think I can do one of these tonight," she says wearily, "one of these" apparently being an intense, unwinnable conversation relating to Ted's emotional neediness. Ted says he loves her; she clearly does not love him back. She loves Rob Nunnally (Billy Burke), her cop boyfriend, and Ted knows about the affair. So Ted shoots her in the head.

Many a film has ended there, but "Fracture," a tauntingly clever cat-and-mouse thriller, uses it as the jumping-off point. Ted the engineer has engineered an elaborate scheme. He knew it would be his wife's lover who would come to the house to arrest him after the gardener heard shots fired, and he knew the fact that the arresting officer was sleeping with the victim would screw things up in court. He's also worked out a very neat trick: Somehow, Ted's gun, the one he shot Jennifer with, the one that was taken from him when he was arrested -- somehow, ballistics reports indicate that gun has never been fired.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE THE COVENANT FROM DVDTALK

Background:

There exists in society a market for just about every type of movie you can imagine, from the silly kiddy fare offered by Disney to the hardest of hardcore offered up by the jaded veterans of Chatsworth, California. Since we all have different levels of expectation and tastes for what we find appealing, your mileage may vary when reading a review because of this. That makes any review suspect since no one can speak to all folks and taking the middle ground all but guarantees the kind of mediocrity you'd expect from one who sits on the fence about everything. Well, today's review of the upcoming release of The Covenant won't be one of those reviews so stick with me for a moment while I explain what type of movie it is, who might like it, and why it works or doesn't work for the supposed market it addresses.

Movie: The Covenant is a movie about a group of gifted teenagers at a high end prep school in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Their families were the founders of the colony hundreds of years ago and the titular covenant was the pact that they made to follow certain rules to keep themselves safe from the puritanical populace in the state. The premise of their gifts is that they are all warlocks, with powers passed down throughout the ages by blood, so the secrets they keep provide them with a measure of security from the mundane mortals that happen to comprise the vast majority of the citizenry. References to Salem's witch hunts are made in the movie and it is clear that secrecy is one of their greatest allies to achieving longevity. So far, so good, right?

In the not-so-far future the polar ice caps have melted and the resulting raise of the ocean waters has drowned all the coastal cities of the world. Withdrawn to the interior of the continents, the human race keeps advancing, reaching to the point of creating realistic robots (called mechas) to serve him. One of the mecha-producing companies builds David, an artificial kid which is the first to have real feelings, especially a never-ending love for his "mother", Monica. Monica is the woman who adopted him as a substitute for her real son, who remains in cryo-stasis, stricken by an incurable disease. David is living happily with Monica and her husband, but when their real son returns home after a cure is discovered, his life changes dramatically. A futuristic adaptation of the tale of Pinocchio, with David being the "fake" boy who desperately wants to become "real". Written by Chris Makrozahopoulos {makzax@hotmail.com}

In this futuristic fairy tale, "David", a highly-advanced robotic boy, hopes to become a real boy so that he can win back the affection of the human mother who abandoned him. Like Pinocchio, he goes on a long journey hoping to find his "Blue Fairy," who can make his dreams come true. Written by jgp3553@excite.com

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FROM DVDTALK

The Movie:
Several years ago, director Stanley Kubrick had several projects in development that he was considering. One, "A.I.", certainly had his interest, but he had decided that special effects were not quite to the point that could work for the kind of undertaking that would be required. While he waited, he filmed "Eyes Wide Shut", but unfortunately, passed away shortly after. It turned out though, that during that time, Kubrick was communicating with director Steven Spielberg about having him direct "A.I." instead.
The movie is sort of "Pinocchio" crossed with "E.T.", with touches of "Tron", "Blade Runner" and several other pictures. Taking place in the future, global warming has caused the ice caps to melt and oceans have swallowed up any seaside cities (New York, etc). The effects used to create the sunken Manhattan make those of "Deep Impact" look primitive by comparison. During this time, population growth is limited and robots are brought in to fill in the gaps. Professor Hobby (William Hurt), who leads Cybertronics, is able to come up with a prototype robot named David (Haley Joel Osment), a robot child who can actually feel and understand love. The company believes that employee Henry Swinton (Sam Robards) and his wife Monica (Frances O'Connor) are candidates to take care of David, since their only son Martin (Jake Thomas) is critically ill and frozen until a cure for his illness can be found. The company believes that David can be a "substitute" of sorts. Originally, it's Monica who is completely against any such idea and Henry who is positive about the introduction of the boy-bot. As time goes by and Martin gradually makes a suprise recovery though, things slowly change. Monica has gotten used to David and even begun to love him while Henry has grown to distrust the boy. After a particular incident, Monica is forced to take David back - but rather than have him be destroyed by the company he came from, she sets him free in the woods, with only a super-toy stuffed bear called Teddy, who is a real scene-stealer. Anyways, this sequence bridges the gap from what would be considered the first part of the movie into act two. David falls in with a group of robots in the woods who are quickly caught by a group (lead by Brendan Gleeson) who run a "flesh fair" where real humans are entertained by watching robots be destroyed in horrifying ways. David latches onto one of the closest bots, Gigolo Joe (Jude Law, in one of his many terrific performances) and asks for protection. After the audience rises up, David and Joe are allowed to go. David is searching for a mystical creature that can "turn him into a real boy"; I won't give away the exact nature of it.

The twist of an object, phrase or ideal in such a way it was never intended or even imagined. Who is the pervert? Why, that's another story altogether... But who is responsible for the bizarre murders James has uncovered? Hezekiah pins the blame on his son, and after a series of unexplainable incidents, James begins to doubt his own suspicions. Little does he know that the real killer lurks just under his nose! Written by Anonymous

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE PERVERT FROM DVDTALK

The Product:

It's the same old story – you can't make crap on purpose. Come to think about it, said statement does need a wee bit of modifying. Yes, you can go out and intentionally create an incredibly awful motion picture experience. You can mess with the narrative, screw up the editing, hire members of your inebriated and inbred family as actors, and generally disregard the very basics of the cinematic language. The results will be atrocious, the kind of disconnected garbage that has no real link to the real world of film. No, what we are really talking about here is the deliberate attempt to make a premeditated cult, camp, kitsch or exploitation epic. You may be able to recapture some of the spirit, but to fully realize the specific genre designs of this manner of surreal schlock is near impossible. Take Pervert! for example. This well meaning sex farce wants desperately to be Far Beyond the Valley of the Psycho-Ultravixens. Even with all the pitfalls facing it, this goofy gratuity almost succeeds.

The Plot:
Returning to his father's desert farm after a semester in college, poor James has a problem. He was so desperate for a date – and a little post-dinner diddling – while doing the University thang that he visited a witch doctor and had a spell placed upon his person. The upside? He's now irresistible to women. The downside? Well, there was a curse involved, and it frequently has a...mind of its own. Anyway, back at Daddy's pad, James discovers that his Pops has blown a gasket. He's shacked up with a stripper from Vegas, and likes to make lifelike human sculptures out of meat. Of course, once exotic eye candy Cheryl sees sonny boy, she makes a beeline for his batch. It's not long before they're sharking up a storm behind the unwitting old man's clueless carcass. One day, Cheryl goes missing. Pops grabs himself another paid paramour – and then she too disappears. James thinks Pops is doing in his pay for play honeys. He even goes so far as to hire a nurse to keep an eye on the old coot. But soon, she's also being plagued by the unbridled terror of James' Haitian hocus pocus. It turns out that the real Pervert! is yet another "member" of the family.

Everybody knows that your life is a story. But what if a story was your life? Harold Crick is your average IRS agent: monotonous, boring, and repetitive. But one day this all changes when Harold begins to hear an author inside his head narrating his life. The narrator it is extraordinarily accurate, and Harold recognizes the voice as an esteemed author he saw on TV. But when the narration reveals that he is going to die, Harold must find the author of the story, and ultimately his life, to convince her to change the ending of the story before it is too late. Written by the lexster

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE STRANGER THAN FICTION FROM DVDTALK

THE MOVIE:

"The type of life being lived, and the quality of the pancakes...."

Stranger Than Fiction was one of my favorite surprises of last year. Sony marketed it as another dumb Will Ferrell vehicle, but the actual movie was a smart metafictional comedy that played with cinematic and literary conventions in quite special ways. In a day and age where every movie is spoiled in the trailer, it's a rare and wonderful thing when the surprises stay hidden and waiting to happen. For once, the marketing may have gotten it wrong, but in all the right ways for guys like me who saw the picture anyway.

Ferrell plays Harold Crick, an IRS-agent whose lonely life is only soothed by his regular cataloguing of the mundane details of his existence. One day, his world is upset by the introduction of a voice in his head. The voice is narrating everything he does, critiquing and turning his every boring action into metaphor and giving an almost anthropomorphic life to Harold's watch. Harold becomes discombobulated by this development, but he tries to soldier on. No one can stop the IRS. Death and taxes are the only inevitable things in life, after all.

As it turns out, Death and Taxes is the name of the book in which Harold is now the unwitting protagonist. It's being written by reclusive author Karen Eiffel (Emma Thompson), and though the IRS part covers the taxes, the death side of things is going to come out of the novel. When Eiffel's authorial voice informs Harold that his demise is imminent, he enlists literature professor Jules Hilbert (Dustin Hoffman) to try to get to the bottom of what is happening to him. Together they try to figure out what kind of story Harold's life is turning into, be it a comedy or a tragedy, and if the plot is something he can take control of or is out of his hands. When it appears that it's the latter, Hilbert suggests that Harold take advantage of the time he has left, and the once meek man sets out to live life to the fullest, attempting all the wild things he was too scared to try previously.

Preston, Idaho's most curious resident, Napoleon Dynamite (Heder), lives with his grandma and his 32-year-old brother (who cruises chat rooms for ladies) and works to help his best friend, Pedro (Efren Ramirez), snatch the Student Body President title from mean teen Summer Wheatley (Haylie Duff). Written by IMDb Editors

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE NAPOLEON DYNAMITE FROM DVDTALK

The Movie: "Napoleon Dynamite", without a doubt, presents the geekiest character ever seen on-screen. However, this isn't one of those Hollywood pictures where the geek suddenly transforms at the end and gets asked out by the head cheerleader. This really, really isn't one of those movies. The film stars John Heder as Napoleon, a tall, awkward kid, with a shock of orangish hair, thick glasses and no real idea about how to approach modern society. The majority of the film is pretty uneventful - Napoleon lives on an Idaho farm with his Uncle Rico (Jon Gries), an odd ex-jock who has Al Bundy-like dreams of sports greatness. Also on the farm is his weird older brother, Kip (Aaron Ruell), who spends the majority of his day talking to women in internet chat rooms. Napoleon's only friend is Pedro (Efren Ramirez), who has just arrived in school. Otherwise, Napoleon spends most of his day getting beaten up by those who are bigger than he is, which means...well, just about everyone. Napoleon doesn't have a girlfriend, either, but he does have an interest in Deb (Tina Majorino), who tries to sell things door-to-door to make enough money to go to college. The unexpected occurs when Pedro also starts having an interest and takes Deb to a dance. Pedro also works into Napoleon's plans when he convinces him to run for class president against the popular Summer Wheatly (Hayley Duff).

"But if you forget to come back for Madame Zeroni, you an your family will be cursed for always and eternity." Those were the exact words spoken to young Elya Yelnats the day he forgot to repay the gypsy Madame Zeroni. From then on his family was cursed with bad luck. One hundred years later Stanley Yelnats IV is accused of stealing a pair of cleats from a major league baseball player and sent to Camp Green Lake (a dry lake bead in the middle of the dessert). It never rains at Camp Green Lake, it hasn't for one hundred years. The secretive and mysterious Warrden has each inmate spend everyday digging one hole to "build character." But when an artifact from the famous "Kissing-Kate Barlow" is found in a hole, the Warrden forces the boys to work double time leading Stanley to deduce they're digging because the Warden is looking for something. But what? And how is the mystery of Camp Green Lake connected to Stanley's family curse? Written by O.G.

Stanley Yelnats IV (Shia LaBeouf) is falsely accused of stealing Clyde 'Sweet Feet' Livingston (Rick Fox)'s shoe donation to a local orphanage and will either go to jail or 'Camp Green Lake.' Stanley chooses Green Lake, where he is forced to dig large holes in the desert each day, by order of the mysterious Warden (Sigourney Weaver) and her assistants Mr. Sir (Jon Voight) and Mr. Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson). But what the Warden is really trying to do is find a buried treasure that was cracked murderer Kissin' Kate Barlow (Patricia Arquette)'s fortune long ago. But when Stanley and his friend Zero (Khleo Thomas) escape, things get really bad. Written by Michael Makowsky {mikeace9@aol.com}

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE HOLES FROM DVDTALK

The Movie:

Based on a popular book I'd never heard of, "Holes" arrived with trailers and advertisements that were noticably vague. Imagine my surprise when the film became one of the year's biggest hits, grossing nearly seventy million dollars. Imagine my further surprise after watching it; this has to be the oddest family fare to ever become such a smash hit, although not nearly the strangest film of the year ("Dreamcatcher" still holds that title).

Stanley Yelnats IV (Shia LaBeouf) is from a cursed family - his father (Henry Winkler) and every male in the family before him suffered from the same run of bad luck. Stanley's troubles occur early in the picture, when he's arrested for stealing a pair of shoes he didn't steal. He's sent off to a camp in the desert, where he befriends the inmates: Zero (Khleo Thomas), Squid (Jake M. Smith), Armpit (Byron Cotton), X-Ray (Brenden Jefferson) and Magnet (Miguel Castro). They all dig holes all day, supposedly to "build character", but obviously for a secret reason the camp's counselors (Jon Voight, Sigorney Weaver and Tim Blake Nelson) are withholding from them.

Once Stanley enters the camp, he finds more about Kissin' Kate Barlow (Patricia Arquette, who looks even better in Western wear), an old-time robber who fell in love with a local admirer (Dule Hill). Unfortunately, their romance was never to be. Her fortune, however, may have been very real. It's to "Holes" credit, however, that it keeps the audience guessing throughout much of its nearly two-hour length. While that may be a little too long for this tale, but director Andrew Davis does keep things moving fairly well. An interesting soundtrack that's a mixture of modern (Beck, Moby) and bluegrass also adds to the mood.

Where to begin? Whatever you're expecting from this film before viewing it, throw your notions of what to expect out. Completely. Nothing(and I mean nothing) can prepare you for the sort of stream of agressive profanity that is packed into the 80 minute length of "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut". IN 1995, Kevin Smith fought the MPAA to get "Clerks", the story of a day in the life of two very vulgar convience store clerks, to be released as an "R" instead of NC-17. "Clerks" was very profane, but at the same time, there was a very witty undercurrent to the proceedings. Sitting through "South Park", I can honestly say that the language here makes "Clerks" look positively tame by comparison. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone gleefully push the limits here, packing in what seems like hundreds(possibly thousands, I simply lost count) of the most absolutely raunchy language ever heard on film. The film tries it's hardest to pack in a whole lot in its short length: the famed SP four(Kenny, Cartman, Kyle and Stan) are off to see the new movie by Canadian stars Terrence and Phillip, "Asses Of Fire"(which contains one of the most profane song numbers ever in film). The adults in the audience walk out, but the kids love it(Cartman states, "it warped my fragile little mind"). Soon enough, the kids are spewing four-letter words throughout their school and shocking not only their teachers but their parents. The parents are angered and seek the source of their kids decent into vulgarity: Terrence and Phillip are from Canada so it's decided that the US will not only go to war against Canada, but execute Terrence and Phillip.Meanwhile, poor Kenny has been killed once again, and finds himself in hell. While there, he not only finds Satan and Saddam Hussein having a relationship, but a secret that could cause the end of not only South Park, but the World.
