The Movie:

Stephen T. Kay's Boogeyman is based on a great premise. As kids, we were all scared of what might be under the bed or hiding in the closet or looking in on us from an opened window. It's natural to be afraid of the dark at a young age, and the fear of the unknown has long been the source of many an inspired horror story and why not? The unknown is scary. Or at least, it can be when the unknown doesn't turn out to suck.

You know, there was once a time in which we as a culture hadn't become utterly desensitized to the site of Disney anally violating its heritage with a gaffe stick. There was a time, long long ago, in which the company retained a health sense of legacy about their timeless masterpieces. HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE FOR THE MOVIE CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2 FROM DVDTALK.

Movie: Remakes and sequels are two of the time tested way for Hollywood to either really score big or really lose a lot of money, with little middle ground worth mentioning. The idea of the remake is to use a basic scenario and update it for the sensibilities of the modern audience, forgetting that nothing works the same outside of the historical context in which it initially came to life. The idea of the sequel is to cash in on a proven franchise or, for the less jaded, to further develop the characters and their situations. This brings me to the subject of today's review of Cheaper By The Dozen 2, a movie that combines elements of both the sequel and the remake, as it was the second volume in the current series.

For the one or two of you out there who haven't heard of ID Software's Doom franchise, it was a huge hit when it first came out and for many gamers out there, it was their first experience to the 'first person shooter' premise in which the player takes on the perspective of the character in the game. It was an insanely successful game, in which a space marine took on hordes of demons who had found their way out of Hell and into Mars, it wasted many hours of my college years, and it's gone on to inspire countless knock offs and sequels and now a Hollywood motion picture starring The Rock.

The Movie:

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have never been afraid to take jabs at world leaders and celebrities regardless of whether or not it might be (to some people, at least) in poor taste to do so. South Park – Bigger, Longer And Uncut is a perfect example of how the two almost seem to relish in skewering those in the public light, whether it be by making fun of popular figure skaters or portraying Saddam Hussein as a homosexual having a torrid and carnal relationship with the devil himself. Parker and Stone's 2004 film, Team America – World Police takes their twisted talent for satire to a whole new level using not live actors or cartoons but by using puppets.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM FROM DVDTALK

Keeping the whole family entertained, including the kids and both Mom and Dad, is quite a chore. Family adventure movies usually send kids' minds into a state of dazed inertia, while the grown-ups get a little nudge-nudge, wink-wink substance with a few one-liners. Night at the Museum, Shaun Levy's new family comedy, gets the kids part right, but leaves the older audience high and dry. Sure, all the razzle-dazzle and computer effects are top shelf and extremely cool to look at. However, this is all a sweet icing layer that'll satisfy younger taste buds without giving that substance, whether it be sentiment or nudge-nudge comedy, to the older crowd.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE THE BENCH WARMERS FROM DVDTALK

The Movie

The Benchwarmers is a slapstick comedy about three men who standup for the unspoken youth of America and challenge a bunch of bully little leaguers in a game of America's favorite pastime, baseball. Directed by Dennis Dugan and produced by Adam Sandler, The Benchwarmers stars well-known feature film actors David Spade, Rob Schneider, and Jon Heder, and has a supporting cast of Jon Lovitz, Reggie Jackson, Tim Meadows, Nick Swardson, andCraig Kilborn. When The Benchwarmers was in theaters, it was not loved by film reviewers. The reviews were bad across the board. However, the movie still ran for seven weeks and grossed 57.6 million dollars before being pulled. I saw The Benchwarmers when it first was released in theaters and I found the movie to be a lot of fun. The story was over-the-top and unbelievable, but in a good sort of way.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE THE MATRIX FROM DVDTALK

A few years back the Wachowski Brothers made their debut with "Bound". I must admit, I stumbled into the theater not knowing what to expect from the film and walked out simply floored; "Bound" was, and still is, one of those films that you only see every so often. It rises above the level of simply a film; it's a film that is experienced; a film that thrills every sense to the point of visual and sonic overload. "Bound" was a small film about two women who plan to steal two million dollars from the local mafia. It took place, for the most part, in one apartment. There wasn't one moment, though, where I wasn't exhilarated; there were moments of absolute tension, dark humor and visual thrills that left me amazed, exhausted and in awe at the detail of every frame. The sheer quality of the screenplay as well as the phenomenal performances were absolutely stunning coming from a directorial debut.

Nicholas Angel is the finest cop London has to offer, with an arrest record 400% higher than any other officer on the force. He's so good, he makes everyone else look bad. As a result, Angel's superiors send him to a place where his talents won't be quite so embarrassing - the sleepy and seemingly crime-free village of Sandford. Once there, he is partnered with the well-meaning but overeager police officer Danny Butterman. The son of amiable Police Chief Frank Butterman, Danny is a huge action movie fan and believes his new big-city partner might just be a real-life "bad boy," and his chance to experience the life of gunfights and car chases he so longs for. Angel is quick to dismiss this as childish fantasy and Danny's puppy-like enthusiasm only adds to Angel's growing frustration. However, as a series of grisly accidents rocks the village, Angel is convinced that Sandford is not what it seems and as the intrigue deepens, Danny's dreams of explosive, high-octane, car-chasing, gunfighting, all-out action seem more and more like a reality. It's time for these small-town cops to break out some big-city justice. Written by Rogue Pictures

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE HOT FUZZ FROM DVDTALK

As much as it teeters on the thin line of absurdity, "Hot Fuzz" is no parody. It's a valentine to blockbuster Hollywood action film posturing and unrelenting violence, strained through the generous wit and perfect execution of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg.

Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is London's finest police officer and a great pain to his fellow, and far lazier, cops. Transferred to the small, peaceful village of Sandford, Angel discovers his co-workers are a group of complete boobs, led by an Inspector (Jim Broadbent) who seems more concerned with ice cream than crime. Partnered with goofball Frank Butterman (Nick Frost), Angel is aghast to find the village an absolute bore. His interests are soon piqued when a series of accidents turn out to not be accidents at all, but a string of murders nobody but Angel is prepared to deal with adequately.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE SAW III FROM DVDTALK

The Product:
It's one of the most unlikely horror franchises in the history of the genre. In an era which saw the Scream film deconstruct scary, and the homemade epic annihilate the reputation of vampires, serial killers and zombies, Australian auteurs Leigh Whannell and James Wan have parlayed their experiment in suspense into a yearly excursion into death and dismemberment. While the Resident Evils stumbled and the Texas Chainsaw efforts wore out their remake welcome, the boys from Downunder, with a little help from Lionsgate and a collection of like minded craftsman, have managed to create a brand new terror titan the cancer-riddled madman known as Jigsaw. After Saw II took off at the box office, earning $87 million, another installment was instantly greenlit. Naturally, fans wondered if the new film would compare favorably to the others, or just be a mindless cash grab for greedy distributors. The answer came when Saw III hit theaters last October. Bigger, bloodier and most importantly better than the sequel, something about this third go round really was the proverbial charm inside all the carnage. And like clockwork, an "Unrated" DVD has arrived to tweak your fear factors all over again.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE SUPER TROOPERS FROM DVDTALK

Over the past few months, I've been inundated with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of excruciatingly bad Austin Powers promos and ads with Dana Carvey chanting "turtle, turtle, turtle". It's truly beyond my comprehension that someone could see a thirty second sport of Mike Myers ceaselessly muttering "mole" and decide that equates to eight dollars worth of entertainment. The lack of any real comedic competition probably makes me appreciate movies like Super Troopers more than I may have otherwise. The brainchild of New York-based comedy troupe Broken Lizard, Super Troopers snuck in under the radar this past February. Though Puddle Cruiser, the troupe's 1996 feature film debut, had yet to be picked up for release, the members of Broken Lizard marched forward, undaunted. Super Troopers was produced for the modest sum of $1.2 million and without the benefit of studio backing. Fox Searchlight gobbled up the rights at Sundance for almost triple the cost of production, and their promotional push was enough to net a respectable $18.5 million at the box office. A TV series is reportedly waiting in the wings, and then there is, of course, the inevitable DVD release.

Onscreen titles at the beginning of "The Hitcher" tell us that 42,000 people are killed on American highways each year. While the rest of his high school graduating class is heading to the same old grind of college, skateboarder Eric Rivers and his best friends, Dustin, a goal-oriented workaholic, and misfit slacker Matt have one last summer roadtrip together to follow their dream of getting noticed by the professional skateboarding world--and getting paid to skate. When skating legend Jimmy Wilson's skate demo tour hits town, the boys figure that as soon as he sees their fierce tricks, he'll sign them up for his renowned skate team immediately, right? Unfortunately, the guys are intercepted by Jimmy's road manager and they can't get their foot in the door, much less their boards. But they do get some free advice: keep skating, stay true to yourself, and stay in the game--if you're good, you'll get noticed. Following their dream-- and Jimmy's national tour--Eric, Dustin and Matt start their own skate team, reluctantly sponsored by Dustin and his college fund. After recruiting laid-back ladies man Sweet Lou to join their crew and provide the wheels for their tour, team Super Duper launches the ride of their lives in an outrageous road trip from Chi-town to Santa Monica. The professional scene doesn't exactly welcome nobody skaters, but these outsiders stick together through extreme misadventures. In their quest to go pro, they meet professional vert skating champions Bucky Lasek, Bob Burnquist and Pierre Luc Gagnon, skate pro Bam Margera and his crew Preston Lacy, Ehren Danger McGhehey and Jason Wee Man Acuña, as well as sexy skate chick Jamie as they grind handrails across America and force the skateboarding world to give 'em a piece of the action. Written by Sujit R. Varma

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE GRIND FROM DVDTALK

The summer skateboarding flop Grind is rated PG-13 for crude humor, sexual content, and language. I think this review might have been slapped with the same rating if it had been run past the MPAA, but probably just for language. See, Grind is really fucking bad. The movie stars Mike Vogel as our determined young hero, Eric Rivers. There are only fifty or so sponsored, professional skateboarders around the country, and Eric is hellbent on joining their ranks. He schemes to catch the eye of pro boarder Jimmy Wilson (Jason London), who trots around the country in a posh tour bus and has his pick of fabulously beautiful women. Eric gathers a group of friends -- broke 'n college bound Dustin (Adam Brody, who looks like someone took Colin Hanks, MTV News' Gideon Yago, and an inability to say the letter 's', put them in a blender, and mashed the "Puree" button), womanizer Sweet Lou (Joey Kern), and loudmouthed chronic farter Matt (Vince Vieluf, who's better in movies where he can't talk) -- and follows Wilson on tour, posing as a group with a non-existent sponsor. Hilarity theoretically ensues as the four of them travel from state to state, skating incessantly, finding romance, and getting caught up in all sorts of zany misadventures.

The Movie

Back when I reviewed the '80s teen classic License to Drive, I shared the story of my last day at college, when myself and the good doctor, Matthew J. McCue, decided to recapture our youth and rent the Corey-filled License and the eminently-quotable, but criminally under-appreciated The Monster Squad (on VHS!). As the last thing I experienced before entering "the real world," these films hold a special place in my heart.

But sentimentality will only go so far when it comes to enjoying an old film or TV show (a fact cruelly learned in reviewing "He-Man".) Fortunately for The Monster Squad, there's much more than nostalgia going for it, as the story of a band of horror film fans battling the classic movie monsters is an fun piece of filmmaking that's also solid '80s nostalgia and an exciting action flick.

HERE IS A REVIEW FROM DVD TALK ON THE MOVIE THE ANT BULLY

The Movie:

Kids say the darndest things, even the animated variety. Leave it to a children's flick like The Ant Bully to nicely illustrate a grim but universal truth of life. The movie begins with scrawny little Lucas Nickle (voiced by Zach Tyler from television's "Avatar: The Last Airbender") suffering a wedgie at the hands of the neighborhood bully. "What are you gonna do about it?" Lucas' tormenter asks rhetorically. "Nothing, 'cause I'm big and you're small."

Almost immediately after the humiliation, Lucas releases his frustrations on an anthill in his front yard. He douses the insects with a squirt gun, boasting that he's entitled to do so since "I'm big and you're small."

As a wise man once said, poop (this is a kid's movie, after all) rolls downhill.

Based on an acclaimed children's book by John Nickle, The Ant Bully details how the aforementioned ant colony weathers continual abuse from Lucas, whom the bugs have dubbed "the Destroyer." A wizard ant named Zoc (Nicolas Cage) -- what's that you say? You didn't know there were wizard ants? -- resolves to halt the reign of terror. When Lucas' parents go out of town and leave the boy in the care of his wacky grandmother (Lily Tomlin), Zoc uses a magical potion to shrink Lucas down to ant-size. The boy awakens tiny enough to slide down his bed atop a potato chip.

Lucas is quickly spirited away to the colony, where the magisterial queen ant (Meryl Streep) sentences the destroyer to live among the ants and learn about their day-to-day lives. Writer-director John A. Davis slathers on the socialist utopia. Under the tutelage of idealistic Hova (Julia Roberts), Zoc's main squeeze, Lucas is educated about the camaraderie of a close-knit community where the ants share and do their part for the greater good. At last, a children's movie that Karl Marx could love.

Or Gandhi, for that matter. From pacifism to the importance of social diversity, The Ant Bully overflows with left-leaning life lessons. All of it is well-intentioned; some of it is genuinely affecting. Much of it is gratingly didactic.

Nevertheless, one particular aspect of the picture resonates above all else: The power of empathy. At its heart, The Ant Bully is about walking in someone else's shoes -- six shoes, to be exact -- as Lucas comes to realize how he has terrorized the ants. The moral is telegraphed from the opening minutes, but as morals go, it's not too shabby -- and one that hasn't really been explored in other animated flicks.

The star-studded cast supplies solid voice work. Particular standouts are cult-movie fave Bruce Campbell as a swaggering scout ant and Paul Giamatti as slovenly exterminator Stan Beals of Beals-a-Bug pest control.

Fortunately, The Ant Bully isn't all preaching. From the chopper-like wasps to a sad-sack glowworm, the imaginings of the insect world boast an overcharged visual style reminiscent of Davis' Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. The action sequences pack real excitement; a few scenes might even be too intense for the youngest viewers. And while there is no shortage of poop and pee references, the scatological humor is held in check more than most children's pictures.

The DVD
The Video:

As one would expect from a new movie, the DVD picture quality is excellent, bursting with vibrant colors and reasonably sharp detail. It is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen.

The Audio:

The Dolby Digital 5.1 is first-rate, but doesn't give the back speakers as much of a workout as one would have hoped. Audio tracks and subtitles are available in English, French and Spanish.

Extras:

It Takes a Colony (16:30) is considerably more entertaining than your usual making-of featurette – perhaps because it is hosted by an animated beetle (not to be confused with an animated Beatle, which, of course, would be Yellow Submarine). Interviews with director-writer Davis and the crew reveal the painstaking work involved in the CG artwork.

Also included are seven animated shorts that spin off from the Ant Bully storyline. Clocking in for an aggregate length of eight minutes and 18 seconds, the clips are mildly cute. Kids will probably dig 'em. Much more interesting -- and surprisingly meaty -- are 10 additional scenes (11:20) that didn't make it into the final film.

Rounding out the extras are a theatrical trailer and, for the easily amused, an ant habitat TV screensaver.

Final Thoughts:

Amid a slew of top-notch animated movies in 2006 (Cars, Over the Hedge, Monster House), The Ant Bully unfortunately found itself lost in the proverbial shuffle. It deserves better; hopefully this solid DVD package will do the trick.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY FROM DVDTALK.

"Chuck & Larry" is a clumsy comedy, made with heartening intentions, but a little wobbly in execution. But you know what? It isn't "Click," and that's something to celebrate.

Larry (Kevin James) is a widowed fireman left with two kids to take care of. His partner in flame is Chuck (Adam Sandler), a distinctly hetero bachelor who is beholden to Larry for saving his life. When his benefit package is threatened, Larry decides that arranging a sham gay marriage to Chuck will solve all his problems. As the new couple on the block, Chuck and Larry find intolerance and judgment everywhere they turn. For Chuck, the charade is especially hard when he falls for their lawyer (Jessica Biel), putting the whole scam at risk for exposure from snoopy outsiders.

The Movie: Before he was "King of the World" with "Titanic", director James Cameron had to start somewhere. After writing and directing a couple of low-budget features (as well as working on a couple of director Roger Corman's films), Cameron was eventually asked to take the helm of "The Terminator", a script that he had written with producer Gale Anne Hurd ("The Relic"). A low-budget feature by today's standards, the film went on to not only be one of the most highly regarded sci-fi pictures of all time, but it also pushed both its director and actor to new heights of stardom. The film revolves around Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), who is a waitress living an exceptionally ordinary life in the middle of Los Angeles. Things change for the much worse one night when a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) arrives from the future to take her out, since the son she's carrying will lead the human resistance movement against the machines after a war breaks out. She's informed of her destiny by another warrior sent to save her, Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn).

HERE IS THE SUMMARY FOR THE MOVIE FARENHEIT 9/11 FROM IMDB

In this film, muckraker Michael Moore turns his eye on George W. Bush and his War on Terrorism agenda. He illustrates his argument about how this failed businessman with deep connections to the royal house of Saud of Saudia Arabia and the Bin Ladins got elected on fraudulent circumstances and proceeded to blunder through his duties while ignoring warnings of the looming betrayal by his foreign partners. When that treachery hits with the 9/11 attacks, Moore explains how Bush failed to take immediate action to defend his nation, only to later cynically manipulate it to serve his wealthy backers' corrupt ambitions. Through facts, footage and interviews, Moore illustrates his contention of how Bush and his cronies have gotten America into worse trouble than ever before and why Americans should not stand for it. Written by Kenneth Chisholm (kchishol@rogers.com

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE FARENHEIT 9/11 FROM DVDTALK

There's no question that Michael Moore's films have bias. Moore isn't a director who makes 'objective observer' documentaries, he's a filmmaker who creates personal and often political essays with a very specific and strong point of view. Fahrenheit 9/11 is no exception. The core of the film is the hypothesis that through power, influence and family connections, George W. Bush not only stole the 2000 presidential election, but he took America to war with Iraq for reasons that had much more to do with money and the welfare of wealthy friends than 'national security'.

I'm sure some readers will stop right here. Judge this film based solely on Moore's 'politics', perhaps even brand Moore with all sorts of nasty labels because of this point of view. If that's the case, what they'd be missing out on is a truly phenomenal film. Fahrenheit 9/11 is so much more than a political jab at conservatives (both sides of the aisle take quite a beating here), it's a surprisingly emotional and personal film from an American trying to make sense of one of the most difficult and surreal points in American History. Moore, who is typically so heavy handed with his documentaries, so biting in his satire and often contemptuous of his subjects, brings a level of emotional honesty to this film that brings it to an entirely different level.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE THIRTEEN FROM DVDTALK

The Movie: Catherine Hardwicke has had a long and distinguished career as a production designer, serving on such films as "Vanilla Sky" and "Three Kings". "Thirteen" is her directorial debut, a picture that has generated controversy at various film festivals and whose ads offer the advice that all parents should see this "wake up call". Although the film has gotten a remarkably positive reception and a lot of hype, I found it rather difficult to pick out too many positive aspects of this sometimes repetitive film. The picture opens with two girls huffing various substances and finding that they're numb to the world around them. So they start hitting each other. First, it's just a slap, then it escalates to full-out smacks and bloody noses as the two laugh about their state. The scene cuts to "four months earlier" without ever really making an impact; it's a rather odd thing to start a movie with two girls we haven't met hitting each other - hard - and laughing about it.

It's always fun to glance back at a celebrity's formative years, but Tom Shadyac's Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994, at top and below left) was hardly the first time we'd seen Jim Carrey in full-on goofy mode. He first caught the attention of most fans during his time spent on In Living Color, the groundbreaking sketch-comedy smorgasbord that also put all 26 Wayans brothers on the map. Carerey was certainly noticeable in earlier films and shows like Earth Girls are Easy (1988) and "The Duck Factory" (1984), each of which catered to his off-kilter sense of humor. Still, it's the triple threat of Pet Detective, The Mask (1994), and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995, below right) that cemented his popularity---and though the charismatic actor nearly painted himself into a corner, he certainly made quite a name for himself in the process.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND FROM DVDTALK

The Movie

With so many people vying to have their ideas made into films, it's always struck me funny that Hollywood comes up with so many lame, boring and downright inane films on a consistent basis. I'm not talking about Die Hard on a "fill in the blank," but rather those ostensibly high-concept pieces that crash and burn, never making it off the runway due to any number of factors, but many of which suck in the script stage and continue sucking all the way until they land in the multiplexes. One such offender would be this summer's bomb My Super Ex-Girlfriend: neat idea on the surface -- neurotic super-heroine engages in typical rom-com shenanigans -- that was horribly muffed by director Ivan Reitman, screenwriter Don Payne and the assembled cast.
