What's worse? A film that celebrates violence or a film that celebrates violence while scolding the audience for celebrating violence? If you feel a little lightheaded at this point, imagine watching a film as thick as "The Condemned" try to solve that riddle.

An ambitious reality television producer is about to take his latest work to the internet. The project is called "The Condemned," and sends 10 death-row prisoners from around the world onto an island to battle to the death for a chance at freedom and for the viewing pleasure of the paying audience. Sent to the island is Jack Conrad ("Stone Cold" Steve Austin), a dangerous man with a secretive past who is more interested in figuring out a way to undermine the program than killing his way off the island.

"Condemned" is a WWE production, the same fine folks who thought "See No Evil" and "The Marine" were worthwhile concepts to push into production. Truthfully, "Condemned" has a quality the earlier films did not share: potential.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE WAR FROM DVDTALK

The fatal flaw of "War," the lazily titled, frenetically produced Asian gangland thriller starring Jason Statham and Jet Li, is that I don't give two craps about anyone in it. Statham plays a San Francisco FBI agent named Jack Crawford who wants to find the assassin who killed his partner three years ago. Li plays Rogue, the aforementioned assassin who was once trained by the CIA before going, um, rogue, changing his face with plastic surgery (he does it every six months to keep the Feds off his trail), and becoming a freelance killer. Rogue has generally worked for the Japanese Yakuza, but now he has apparently switched over to the Chinese Triad. This change in allegiances from one Asian organized-crime syndicate to another means a great deal to everyone in the movie, primarily because it escalates the war between the two groups. It would appear that Rogue is intentionally pitting them against each other, and this affects how the FBI does its job in bringing them down. Me? I sincerely could not possibly care less who wins in the battle between the Yakuza and the Triad. Honestly. Sometimes people are exaggerating when they say they "couldn't care less," because in truth they DO care at least a tiny, tiny bit, and so they therefore COULD care less. But I am not exaggerating. I genuinely have no interest whatsoever in this conflict.

The Movie:
After the original "Neverending Story" gained an even wider cult following after its massively successful theatrical release in 1984, it became apparent that a sequel might not be out of the question. Director Wolfgang Peterson ("Air Force One", "Perfect Storm") did not come back, nor did any members of the main cast, who had obviously grown up beyond their characters at that point. The results of this 1990 effort aren't quite as imaginative or interesting, but the film still has its moments. Bastian (this time, played by Jonathan Brandis of the "Seaquest" series) finds himself generally in the same place this time around. He's still not getting along with with the other children in school and this time, he's starting to become at odds with his father. Again, he seeks out the old man's bookstore and, soon, hears the pleas of the Childlike Empress asking the young lad to return to Fantasia and save the day with his imagination once more. The first half seems like simply a Wizard of Oz clone merged with the opportunity to reintroduce the favorite characters from the first picture. Sebastian finds himself with the ability to grant wishes, but not only do his wishes not go well, they're being controlled by an evil witch. Every time Sebastian makes a wish, the witch takes away one of his memories - until he's left with no more. Joined again by Atreyu (Kenny Morrison this time), he sets out to save Fantasia before his memories are wiped clean. Characters like Falcor and Rockbiter make brief cameos.

The Movie:
I'll always be pleased that my generation seems to be the last one to receive quality family entertainment. Princess Bride, Secret Of Nimh, Goonies, Neverending Story, the list goes onwards. These are pictures that simply aren't made anymore, as studios recognize that flashy animation is certainly cheaper and can return a quick profit. As for the group I've mentioned, "Story" remains one of the best of the breed, a suprisingly creative and inspiring picture that remains as enjoyable for adults as it does for children. It also contains a wonderful message that isn't presented in a heavy-handed way. Suprisingly, it was directed by Wolfgang Petersen, who has been responsible for the classic submarine picture "Das Boot", as well as recent films like "The Perfect Storm". The film stars Barret Oliver as Bastian, a small boy who is attacked by bullies on his way to class and ends up in a bookstore. The owner doesn't like children, but the two eventually discuss books, including a certain book that the shopowner has in his posession. When the keeper's head is turned away, Bastian runs off with the book, but he finds that he's late for class. Hiding out in the school's attic, he begins to read and finds himself involved in a fantasy world called Fantasia. The creatures of Fantasia are an interesting bunch: a rock-biter that eats various kinds of rocks, a racing snail, a flying dragon named Falcor, an anicent turtle and others. Not all is right in the land though, as an evil force called "the Nothing" is sweeping over the land and destroying it. The princess of Fantasia has fallen ill and a young warrior named Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) to find a way to stop "the Nothing" from destroying their world. Meanwhile, Bastian finds that he's a part of their adventures, even though he's never left the room in the schoolhouse.

Swashbuckle is in curious short supply in "Last Legion," a mythology-flavored fantasy epic from Dino De Laurentiis's epic factory, tossed unmercifully into US theaters this weekend with only a wisp of marketing and no press screenings. Treatment typically associated with the kiss of death, "Legion" actually holds a small spark of pleasing adventure, making it passable matinee fare, just don't ask too much from it.

In the declining days of Rome, a young king named Romulus (Thomas Sangster, "Love Actually") is crowned. When evil forces storm the city, the boy, protected by royal officer Aurelius (Colin Firth), is taken to the countryside to find safety with his mentor, Ambrosinus (Ben Kingsley). When it's learned that most Roman forces have been eliminated, it's up to Aurelius to lead his band of men, along with a strange warrior from a foreign land (Aishwarya Rai), to a safe harbor where they can regroup and prepare to fight back. Along the way, Romulus discovers his destiny when he uncovers a special sword called Excalibur, meant only for the bravest of leaders.

There's considerable proof throughout "Last Legion" that some serious coin was spent to bring this peculiar story to the screen. The production didn't skimp out on the details, mounting a lavish costume spectacle that's ready to rumble, yet is assigned a lumbering story to sort out. Frightened to lean too heavily towards the fantasy elements of the plot, "Legion" crumbles when it focuses on banal Roman political maneuvering. There's a multitude of sniveling double-crosses and protracted battle planning in the script, which doesn't hold much interest. With actors in bad wigs and covered in ornate battle armor, taking elongated breaks between the action beats to chat endlessly about political allegiances seems to defeat the purpose of this gallant affair.

The Movie The cover art of many DVDs feature blurbs from movie critics (or people like Larry King who I don't really considered to be movie critics). I typically avoid reading these because, A) I usually don't care, and B) I don't want my opinion accidentally influenced. While watching School for Scoundrels, I thought to myself, "This is like Bad Santa meets Napoleon Dynamite." After viewing the film, I noticed that front cover was emblazoned with a quote from Rolling Stone which states "Bad Santa meets Napoleon Dynamite". Wow! Was this remarkable synergy that we both thought this? No, this is the reaction that most anyone would have while watching this movie, and I can only assume that this was the intention of the people behind School for Scoundrels. But does the movie offer more than this? In School for Scoundrels we meet Roger Waddell (Jon Heder), a shy, goofy guy who works as parking patrol (he's a meter maid) in New York City. A timid man, Roger finds himself constantly intimidated and pushed around by co-workers and even those he tries to ticket. He has a crush on his neighbor, Amanda (Jacinda Barrett), but he's afraid to approach her and he's usually scared off by Amanda's cranky roommate, Becky (Sarah Silverman). Roger's acquaintance Ian (David Cross), tells Roger of a man who can help him. Roger calls the phone number given to him by Ian and receives a mysterious set of instructions informing him to come to a local learning annex and to bring $5000. Roger shows up at the appointed time and finds himself in a class administered by "Dr. P" (Billy Bob Thornton) and his muscle-man, Lesher (Michael Clarke Duncan). Dr. P is an abrasive, insulting man, but he promises that he can make the class full of men, whom he refers to as losers, into confident and successful people. Roger is thrown by Dr. P's approach, but he's desperate for help and he decides to go along with it. Roger stumbles at first, but he begins to find his footing and he is able to assert himself at work and he even gets the courage to ask Amanda out on a date. But, while Dr. P enjoys success, he doesn't like for his students to get too cocky, and soon, Roger and Dr. P are locked in a battle of wills.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE BRING IT ON ALL OR NOTHING FROM DVDTALK

The Movie

So here's the equation: A medium-budget studio release goes on to become a surprise hit, so it only stands to reason that sequel-talks begin circulating. But the immortal rule of sequel-making dictates that you spend less money on the follow-up, which means when you're doing a Part 2 to a mid-budget flick, you're all of a sudden wandering into low-budget territory -- regardless of the fact that Universal is footing the bill.

Extra low budgets mean lesser stars, shorter production time, and less expensive experts -- which means you're now wandering into direct-to-video country. And if we learned anything from the Bring It On sequel, the cleverly titled Bring It On Again, it's that some movies, however profitable, do not warrant sequels. But hey, someone over at Universal figured that "cheerleaders = money," and that's basically how sequels get made these days.

So now with Bring It On Again more than two years gone (and entirely forgotten), Universal decides it's time for yet another pom-pom-romp, this one called Bring It On: All or Nothing. A sequel inasmuch as it deals with high school girls who are cheerleaders, this third entry in the perpetually leering series is precisely what you think it is: redundant, familiar, uninspired, drab, obvious, and endlessly generic. But I suppose the 12-year-old girls might like it ... if only if the flick weren't jam-packed with smarmy crotch jokes and nearly-latent racism.

One day, an unidentified monster suddenly appears from the depths of the Han River and spreads panic and death, and Gang-du's daughter Hyun-seo is carried off by the monster and disappears. HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE THE HOST FROM DVDTALK

The Movie
It's the rare monster movie that lets you see the creature right off the bat, and then hides it away, letting the human characters be the stars, and their interactions advance the plot. The Host is one of those films, as it follows the Park family, as it bands together, against the monster and the government, to find their youngest member, Hyun-seo, who was taken by the creature. Along the way, they run into frequent troubles, with everyone they encounter working against them and preventing them from saving Hyun-seo.

The creature, born of U.S. pollution in Korea, is as unsubtle a statement as could be made about the world's view of the United States, as it puts a foreign country in peril through no fault of its own, and when it can't solve the problem, it needs America to step in, take over and clean things up. But the film doesn't obsess over politics (at least for the bulk of the 119-minute runtime,) as it much prefers the Parks' dysfunction over any international scraps, keeping a close eye as frequent screw-up Gang-Du, his siblings, Nam-il and Nam-Joo, and their father Hie-bong, battle each other out familiarity, more than contempt. Unfortunately, focus is not the film's strong point, as it moves in fits and starts, bouncing between Hyun-Seo's struggle for survival in the monster's lair and her family's efforts to save her.

For a film that's peppered with moments of comedy, the more serious scenes manage to maintain a believable tone, thanks to some fantastic audio design and a score that's as tense andnerve-wracking as a Hitchcock film. Throw in some beautifully kinetic and artistic cinematography, and you've got a dramatic cult film that represents the best qualities ofidiosyncratic Asian filmmaking. The final climatic battle between man and beast alone would be enough to earn this film a spot in the film history books, but it's matched in tenacity and monstrous goodness by the opening scene, one of the most original, well-filmed monster attacks in recent history.

A History of Violence is one of the better movies of 2005, from one of the few directors left who imbues his films with a distinctive persona. In the middle 1970s David Cronenberg seemed like a tricky young horrorphile concerned with extreme effects and gory ideas. He shared a television interview (included on the Criterion DVD of Videodrome) with directors John Carpenter and John Landis; all three were engaged in making bloody horror films. Of the three, only Cronenberg has consistently had 'something to say.' He made the best Stephen King adaptation in The Dead Zone and proved with his brilliant re-thinking of The Fly that his 70s obsession with grotesque bodily mutations was a relevant theme. His later work has maintained a high level of intelligence while exploring a variety of bizarre, but always human, concepts.

Starting as an 'Everyman' tale, A History of Violence then takes a sideways detour, becoming an exploration of man-as-monster through the story of one very atypical man caught between two radically different identities. I'll try to review the picture without spoiling anything about it; if you haven't seen it yet and want some good surprises, don't even view a trailer. Knowing anything in advance will hurt the film's impact.

One expects going into a Fox Faith release to be inundated with a heightened sense of melodrama. After all, how better to present messages of hope and love than to mix it with tears and broad depictions of failure and success? "The Ultimate Gift" should be approached with an eye toward expecting the obvious. Only then do the life lessons have a fighting chance to sink in.

Jason Stevens (Drew Fuller, "Charmed") is a lazy trust fund brat with little sense of purpose to his life. When his tycoon grandfather Red (James Garner) passes away, his lecherous family claws away at the fortune, but Red saves his greatest gift for Jason. Through his attorney (Bill Cobbs), Red arranges a series of challenges for Jason, sending him around the globe in an effort to get the young man to better appreciate people and give to the world around him.

"Ultimate Gift" is adapted from the best-selling novel by Jim Stovall, whose story of personal inventory was intended to instill selflessness in people. In movie form, "Gift" won't have that type of reach, but it's not for lack of trying. It's a commendable production that sets lofty goals for itself, yet the film doesn't always have the tools to accomplish everything it sets out to.

Think of "Gift" as "Brewster's Millions," but without the comedy and with more focus paid to issues of the soul. In trying to cinematically cover this idea of the "12 Gifts" that help people connect, writer Cheryl McKay overworks the plot to fold all the messages into a single fluffy feature film. The story of Jason facing his empty existence for the first time is a persuasive one, and is executed well by director Michael O. Sajbel ("One Night with the King"), but there's inconsistency in the storytelling that constipates the overall objective of the piece.

Author Jack Finney's 1955 novel "The Body Snatchers" has been put through more Hollywood adaptations than most similar pieces of literary bubblegum. The odd thing is, a majority of these incarnations turn out to be terrific movies, from the 1956 classic starring Kevin McCarthy ("Invasion of the Body Snatchers") to a 1978 creeper from director Philip Kaufman to Abel Ferrara's lost cult beauty from 1993 ("Body Snatchers"). "The Invasion" picks up the baton for a new generation of moviegoers, but it's a bumpy ride, testing the narrow possibilities of what this story has to offer.

When an American space shuttle disintegrates upon reentry, fragments of the ship are scattered across the country, each one coated with unidentified spores that contaminate anyone it comes in contact with. Carol (Nicole Kidman) is an icy psychiatrist who starts to question the altered mentality of her fellow citizens, clinging to her son and a best friend (Daniel Craig) for answers. Isolated in an alien pandemic, Carol fights to survive the night as thousands of zombie-like, emotionally blank infected start to take over the city, spreading their disease. Trying to protect her child, while staving off the effects of the aliens by staying awake, Carol battles her way to find a safe haven, if there's one still left.

Crafty Hollywood insiders report that "Invasion" suffered from an unpopular initial cut, thus necessitating the introduction of the Wachowski Brothers to write, oversee a re-edit, and film a new ending over a year after production concluded. Even if one wasn't armed with that knowledge, it's obvious that something happened to "Invasion" as it wiggled through the post-production process. To be blunt: the film is one hot mess, filled with crazy editing leaps and narrative holes, with renewed focused placed on hustling through the story as rapidly as possible.

Ah, Chris Rock and Eric Rohmer, the two masters together at last. Wait a minute, Rock and Rohmer? If the combination sounds strange to you, "I Think I Love My Wife" doesn't disagree.

Richard (Chris Rock) is man with a great job, two beautiful children, and a wife (Gina Torres) who has long ago stopped paying sexual attention to him. Bored with his marriage, Richard finds himself vulnerable to the charms of Nikki (Kerry Washington), an old acquaintance who has floated back into his life. Richard embraces Nikki's advances under the guise that they're "friends," but when the reality of the potential infidelity hits him at home, Richard must confront his impulses and bad decisions.

French New Wave director Rohmer defined his career making movies about conflicted, morally shaky men, and it's interesting to report that Chris Rock has managed to maintain some of that bastard integrity for his film. Co-writing (with Louis C.K.) and directing "Wife," Rock is looking for a break from the broad comedies he's normally associated with, including his last directorial effort, the amusing 2003 political lampoon, "Head of State."

By writing himself the sad sack role of Richard, Rock is sneaking in a way to expand his career. "Wife" is a comedy, but the elements of drama and other shades of gray are shoveled into the film to lend it some weight beyond the lust for the laugh. I applaud Rock for challenging himself with the picture, but that doesn't mean it clicks.

Updating Rohmer's 1972 film "Chloe in the Afternoon," Rock has cherry picked all the ideas of infidelity and consequence but also lubes up the project with his own sense of humor. "Wife" is profane, awkward, and sprinkled with a strange racial subtext; basically the cinematic equivalent of Rock himself.

Rock doesn't know how to direct this material, and "Wife" can be an erratic moviegoing experience due to his hesitation. One minute the film has some comically dark, yet semi-profound ideas to share on the idea of marriage and the marital neutering of the American male. The next minute, "Wife" is a study in the mine field of fidelity, and the red hot lure of an alpha sexual partner. And in the moments where the picture is least attentive, gags are tossed in that could come from any one of Rock's comedy albums.

However, hotel manager Mr. Olin has strong objections to Enslin's stay and only warns him of possible danger to come. But Enslin is determined to go through and convinced that the horrific past of 1408 is just mere coincidence and a myth. HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE 1408 FROM DVDTALK

There seem to be two distinct flavors of Stephen King film adaptations. Either it's a full-on scare-the-dickens-out-of-you night at the movies or it's the journey to the center of the insane mind. "1408" falls into the latter category, yet a large percentage of the middle act wants to play by the now familiar rules of suspense cinema. It's a confusing mix, but then again, "1408" is a difficult movie to decipher.

Mike Enslin (John Cusack) is a non-fiction novelist specializing in the haunted attractions of America. Urged to try spending the night at the Dolphin Hotel in the cursed room 1408, it takes everything the hotel manager (Samuel L. Jackson, in a five-minute cameo) has to try and convince Enslin to change his plans. The author won't budge, and embarks on a stay that will challenge his skeptical nature, forcing Enslin to confront a torturous past with his deceased daughter and a lifetime of disbelief.

Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom made a dent on the American film scene with the 2005 thriller, "Derailed." A nicely detailed piece of trash, "Derailed" couldn't help but fall apart in the final reel, so it comes as little surprise that "1408" also suffers the same fate.

Adapted from a King short story, "1408" has to fill a 90+ minute running time with a concept that should rightfully take up about 30 minutes. However, Hafstrom is skilled at the build up to the hotel room sequences; giving the audience a nice feel of Enslin's testy personality before he's subjected to a barrage of nightmares.

It's takes a good half hour before we even get into the dreaded hotel room, and once it arrives, there's really nowhere for "1408" to effectively go. This is an origami-paper-thin concept about psychological confinement, and the screenplay works up a summer-day-20k sweat trying to fill the narrative with bits of character dimension and generic suspense. The director is actually able to breathe some life into the majority of the picture, drizzling on the required bits of evil and alarm; but he's punishing Enslin for sins the audience surely won't be invested in.

Becoming Jane sounded like a great idea. A biography of Jane Austen told in the style of one of her books, with Anne Hathaway cast as the young author. The actress was an excellent choice. Her command of the language, her intelligence, and doe-eyed beauty would be perfectly suited for the etiquette, clever outbursts, and period costumes such a role would surely require. In that sense, thankfully, the filmmakers did not fail, as Hathaway makes good on our expectations. The script, unfortunately, does not, somehow forgetting that Austen was actually a real person. Instead, TV writers Kevin Hood and Sarah Williams and Kinky Boots director Julian Jarrold truss up their heroine so tight, she all but disappears, relying instead on audience foreknowledge of Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility to provide any sort of connection with the movie at all.

Writers giving short shrift to a fellow writer in her own story. Surely Austen herself would enjoy the irony.

The set-up for the story is that young Jane is next in line amongst her sisters to be married. With elder Cassandra (Anna Maxwell Martin, Bleak House) engaged to a young priest who has been under tutelage to the girls' father (James Cromwell, The Queen), it's up to Jane to pick a proper suitor to settle down with. Her mother (Julie Walters, a.k.a. Mrs. Weaseley in the Harry Potter movies) feels that it's of particular import that Jane marry into money, as the family barely survives on what Mr. Austen makes at their local parish. Resident money maven Lady Gresham (Dame Maggie Smith) has a nephew she's ready to link to the rebellious girl, but poor Wisley (Laurence Fox) is like Lurch in a proper dressing coat, lumbering in both speech and movement.

Naturally, Jane can't marry Wisley, because she must marry for love, a principle her father has instilled in her. Like a heroine in her novels, she has been encouraged to dream, indulged in her early morning scribblings, and she's not willing to give in easily. Particularly when there are outsiders like the ghastly Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy, Starter For Ten) to secretly swoon over while outwardly declaring him detestable. Lefroy likes to drink, carouse, and even do some bare-chested boxing, and he's been exiled to the country in a kind of Victorian version of rehab. He must get his gadabout ways out of his system!

The Movie
The first of the Batman films to truly explore what makes a man with everything risk it all to fight crime, Batman Begins is the only Batman film to try and base the superhero in reality. Because of that, it works better than all the rest, even Batman, which to this point had been the standard-bearer for the character. In many ways, it's a companion piece to Spider-Man, which is the lighter version of the "real" superhero film. (X-Men, though an excellent comic-book film, doesn't match these two in terms of pure filmmaking.)

This movie tells the story of how Bruce Wayne became Batman and how Batman became a hero. Along the way, he trains Jedi-style with the mysterious Ducard (Liam Neeson), finds himself an ally in a friend of his father's, Lucius (Morgan Freeman), battles for control of his family's company, and deals with a childhood friend (Katie Holmes) who doesn't agree with his life choices. But despite these sidebars, in the end, it's a story about the maturation of a man. Starting with the character's origin and moving forward into how he became the hero he is known as, the movie tells stories about Batman that haven't been given such time before, and as a result, the film tells a fuller tale of Batman, making him more than an icon or a cartoon. In this film, Batman is a man first.

The key to such films is not focusing on the costume, and instead on the man who wears it. It doesn't hurt when the man who wears it is an actor of Christian Bale's abilities. While I felt Val Kilmer was an excellent Bruce Wayne, and Keaton a fine Batman, Bale combines the two halves of the role, and instills them with a darkness that was here-to-fore missing. Seeing the one and only American Psycho don the cowl reveals about as perfect a casting choice as could have been made, as Bale is able to slide from charismatic playboy to snarling beast with incredible ease. Much of what ends up on-screen obviously emerged from Bale's own chameleon-like capabilities as an actor.

Her brother Dwayne, a fanatical follower of Nietzsche, has taken a vow of silence, which allows him to escape somewhat from the family whose very presence torments him. And Olive's grandfather is a ne'er-do-well with a drug habit, but at least he enthusiastically coaches Olive in her contest talent routine. Circumstances conspire to put the entire family on the road together with the goal of getting Olive to the Little Miss Sunshine contest in far off California. The Movie

It's the little movie that could -- focused on a supremely dysfunctional clan, yet limned with a dark comic spirit and palpable empathy for its fucked up, fucked over cast of characters, Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton's big-screen directorial debut Little Miss Sunshine is that rare blend of pathos and the in-vogue awkward comedy. Most refreshing is that Michael Arndt's subtly lacerating screenplay takes stock clich�s and infuses them with quirks that approach reality, albeit an extremely heightened sense of reality; you watch Little Miss Sunshine and see a splintered, spirited family unit grow closer and approach something resembling understanding.

To ruin the surprises of Little Miss Sunshine would rob those coming to the film for the first time: the endearingly combative Hoover family � led by self-help patriarch Richard (Greg Kinnear), daughter Olive (Abigail Breslin) is a budding beauty pageant contestant and her brother Dwayne (Paul Dano) is going on nine months as a mute, studying the nihilistic works of Nietzsche. Mom Sheryl (Toni Collette) has her hands full with her suicidal brother Frank (Steve Carell) and Richard's caustic, drugged out dad (Alan Arkin).

In Cincinnati, the dentist Doug Madsen is in crisis, bored with his middle-class life and missing his reckless youth when he was known as the Golden Biker. The wealthy Woody Stevens is married with a top-model. Together, the four middle-aged friends in their motorcycles self-call the "Wild Hogs". I'm in a state of shock after watching "Wild Hogs." There was an assured recipe for disaster in this attempt to address the comedic edge to the Average Joe's mid-life crisis, especially considering some of the track records of the talent. Fortunately, "Hogs" appears to have one simple goal for itself: keep it silly.

Finding their lives have been swallowed by routine and disappointment, buddies Woody (John Travolta), Doug (Tim Allen), Bobby (Martin Lawrence), and Dudley (William H. Macy) decide to take their weekend hobby of riding motorcycles to the next level: a week-long road trip. Heading off to see America, the boys find only mishaps and accidents as they snake their way across the land. Their biggest offense is irritating the leader of a Hells Angels-like gang (Ray Liotta, in scenery-chewing Ray Liotta mode), forcing them to take refuge in a tiny New Mexico town, where they find love (Marisa Tomei), friendship, and the motorcycle gang right on their tail.

"Stardust" might be the "Princess Bride" of its generation: a darkly comedic and imaginative fairy tale full of witches, princes, and magic spells, not to mention a happily-ever-after ending. The story (based on a book by Neil Gaiman) is bursting with memorable characters and sly wisdom, with heroes you can love and villains you can love hating. A couple of small missteps aside, it's one of the most purely delightful movies of the year. Our hero is 18-year-old Tristan Thorn (Charlie Cox), an unremarkable but good-hearted lad in the 19th-century English village of Wall. He is in love with the vain Victoria (Sienna Miller), and when they see a falling star one night, he vows to bring the star to her as a token of his love. In exchange for this, she says she will marry him. The star has fallen on the other side of Wall's wall, in an enchanted land called Stormhold, and Tristan is surprised to learn that stars have a human shape. This one, named Yvaine, has the shape of Claire Danes. She finds Tristan rude at first, and Tristan has eyes only for Victoria, but they can help one another here: Tristan has a magic candle (bequeathed by his long-lost mother) that can get Yvaine back to the heavens where she belongs, and he agrees to let her use it if she'll accompany him back to Wall and let him show her to Victoria. Other people want Yvaine, too, though. The king of Stormhold (Peter O'Toole) is dying, and the throne will go to whichever of his sons can 1) get the ruby that is now in Yvaine's possession, and 2) avoid being killed by his brothers. The Stormhold princes have a tendency to murder one another, you see. Their ghosts, still bearing the marks of the way they were killed, are doomed to hang around, observing and commenting and continuing to quarrel, until the matter of heirship is settled.

"Hot Rod" isn't so much a comedy as it is an exclusive clubhouse for those who define their existence by the articulation of their zany. It's a wild one, but not without its charms. And yes, I do write that with the full knowledge that Will Arnett appears in the film.

Rod (Andy Samberg) is a wannabe stuntman, spending his time hanging with his group of friends (including Bill Hader and Jorma Taccone), executing daredevil spectacles poorly, and trying to win the heart of his neighbor (Isla Fisher). When his stepfather (Ian McShane) needs $50,000 for heart surgery, Rod hopes to cash in on his talents and raise the money by clearing 15 school buses on a motorcycle. Conjuring the spirits of the animal kingdom and harvesting the power of a fake mustache, Rod begins a laborious training period to achieve his goal.

"Hot Rod" is the starring debut for Andy Samberg, an SNL player who always seems to struggle on the show expanding his irreverence past the three-minute mark. The pop culture icon behind the "Lazy Sunday" and "Dick in a Box" digital shorts (sadly, my heart belongs to the laser cats), Samberg is a performer of sizeable energy, but his range of laugh impact is a limited one. He's born from the Sandler School of the Absurd, stitching together a haphazard series of jokes and non-sequiturs to make "Hot Rod" the new king of the dorm room DVD collection.
