The Movie:

At this point in time everyone knows how Snakes On A Plane came to be – a few movie execs were joking around about the worst pitch imaginable, the title came up, the internet blew it sky high, New Line added more sex, violence and bad language and voila. With so much hype around the movie there was no possible way that it would live up to everyone's expectations but even with (or, perhaps because of) the movie's huge plot holes, stereotypical cookie-cutter characters and insane logic gaps, the movie turns out to be a perfectly enjoyable action-horror hybrid. High art it is not, but it's a great beer and pizza movie.

When the movie begins, a surfer named Sean Jones (Nathan Phillips) is driving around Hawaii on his dirt bike and sucking back some Red Bull when he comes across a gangster named Eddie Kim (Byron Lawson) in the midst of killing someone who got just a little too close to him. Unfortunately for Sean, Kim sees him and sends his cronies after him – they can't leave any witnesses alive. Sean heads back to his apartment (which is stocked with more Red Bull) and just as he hears someone breaking in through the front door he heads out back and meets Neville Flynn (Samuel L. Jackson), an F.B.I. agent who has somehow managed to find out what's happening and arrive just in time to save him from certain death.

After Flynn and his partner convince Sean to testify against Kim, they decide to fly him back to Los Angeles where the trial is going to happen. They commandeer the first class section of a big ol' jetliner and, with the rest of the supporting cast tucked firmly away in coach and a witty pilot named Rick Archibald (David Koechner) in the cockpit, they leave Hawaii for the lengthy trip over the Pacific Ocean to sunny California. Unfortunately for everyone on board, Kim has somehow managed to get a gigantic box of poisonous snakes on the plane and has had all of the lei's that the passengers were given by the airline doused in a pheromone that is known to make snakes unusually aggressive. Once they're up in the air, the snakes are unleashed and Neville has to take charge of the situation to make sure that he gets Sean safely to L.A. while trying to save as many innocent civilians as possible. Thankfully, he's not completely alone – there are four members of the flight crew (Lin Shaye, Julianna Margulies, Sunny Mabrey and Bruce James), a rapper (Flex Alexander – a great name for an action figure!) and his two body guards, a couple of kids flying alone for the first time (Curtis Brown and Tommy Brown), a cute but ditzy rich chick with a dog (Rachal Blanchard), a snooty English dude (Gerard Plunkett) who doesn't like Americans or the rich chick's dog, and a young foreign lady (Elsa Pataky) and her newborn baby. Oh, and there's a competitive kickboxer (Terry Chen) on the plane too, but he doesn't really do much.

While Jackson's screen presence and penchant for chewing through even the thickest of scenery are reason enough to give this a look, the best part of the movie is the creativity and complete stupidity of the snake attacks themselves. You wanna see a couple who smoke a doobie and try to join the mile high club get attacked by snakes? You got it. Why not have the snake chomp down on her titty while you're at it! Maybe a guy should go to the rest room and take a leak and a snake should jump out of the toilet and bite his wang... yep, they thought of that too. Snakes are all over this plane, biting women in the eyes and fat black dudes on the ass with reckless abandon. You've got big snakes, small snakes, in-between snakes - snakes of many colors, shapes and size are all here, and they're all biting people like crazy.

If you're the type of viewer who wants realism in their cinema, Snakes On A Plane is not the movie for you. Even if you're able to suspend your disbelief easily enough, it's hard not to scratch your head wondering why certain characters do what they do or even how exactly the snakes got on the plane undetected in the first place. There are so many flubs in the film that it's hard to keep track of them all, and nothing really happens for any logical reason here. The characters are all stereotypes of some sort (with Jackson playing the stereotype of himself) and the dialogue and actions of these stereotypes play exactly as you would expect them to. That being said, Snakes On A Plane is a lot of fun. It's a big, dumb trash film that works in elements from disaster movies, horror movies, and action movies with plenty of darkly comic touches. The end result is a sort of tasty can of cheap genre stew. Not something you'd order at a fancy restaurant, but a tasty meal of a movie that warms your belly and which satisfies your hunger.

Some reviews and summaries of "The Game Plan" will refer to Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character as an NFL quarterback. This is incorrect. He plays for the Boston Rebels, which of course is not a real NFL team. (It seems to me that "Rebels" calls to mind the Southern states in the Civil War more than it does the American revolutionaries of 1776, but never mind.) The Rebels' opponents are carefully referred to by their city, never by team name. And the big game at the end of January -- which in real life would be the Super Bowl -- is just called the "championship game." In other words, the most likely scenario is that the NFL wouldn't let Disney use any of its teams, logos, or trademarks. I mention this because how bad does a movie have to be for an organization that employs mostly felons and miscreants, and which will put its name on just about anything, to want nothing to do with it? This is the kind of movie that Disney used to make a lot of back in the day: live-action, simple-minded, aimed at children, and kind of stupid. The difference is that at least the old movies usually had a goofy supernatural element to them, like donkeys kicking field goals, or boys turning into dogs, or Tommy Kirk being interested in girls. "The Game Plan" is allegedly set in the real world, with the normal laws of physics and logic being applied ... which makes it disappointing when nothing makes sense anyway. Former wrestler/current Vin Diesel impersonator Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson plays star Rebels quarterback Joe Kingman, a narcissistic showboater who makes full use of his swingin' bachelor pad and his millions of dollars of discretionary income. His life is turned upside-down, and he learns valuable lessons about What's Really Important, when he finds out two things: 1) he has an 8-year-old daughter; 2) he has to take care of her for a month. The girl is named Peyton (Madison Pettis), and since this is a Disney movie, Joe was actually married to her mother years ago: She was newly pregnant when the divorce became final, and she never told Joe about it. Now she's run off to Africa on a humanitarian mission and dumped Peyton at his apartment, without notice, accompanied only by a letter informing him of her existence and asking him to take care of her for a month. If you see a lot of implausibilities in this situation and immediately start questioning things, then you are smarter than the characters in the movie, who just sort of go, "Really? Huh. That's weird," and then forget about it. That includes Joe's conniving, no-nonsense agent (Kyra Sedgwick), who really should be smarter. Peyton is a precocious 8-year-old (I believe "precocious" is the only style of 8-year-old that Disney produces) with a fondness for classical music, ballet, and TV shows about ponies. Needless to say, she totally wrecks super-manly Joe's lifestyle! She puts a tutu on his dog! She takes a bubble bath that fills the whole bathroom with bubbles! She leaves her doll on the floor, and stepping on it causes Joe -- the most athletically gifted football player in America -- to slip frantically and land flat on his face!

Unbreakable was a largely underrated movie that came out late last year from the creator of The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan. I was not able to see the movie when it came out in the theaters because of a death in the family and I was quite excited to get my hands on this DVD. If you've ever been into comic books or are a former or current comic book collector, you should like this film quite a bit. The two people I watched this with were neither and they both liked it as well. Unbreakable is the story of David Dunn (Bruce Willis), a football security guard that seems to have a normal life. He and his wife (Robin Wright Penn) are on the mend, he's looking into finding a job elsewhere and there's a son in the picture as well. The beginning is set on a train where Dunn is talking to the woman next to him. Next thing you know, the train has derailed. We go to the hospital with the mom and son and find out that David survived the derailment without a scratch on his body while everyone else on the train died. So, why did he live through the train wreck and why, from the best of his knowledge, has he never been sick? This is when we meet Elijah Price, the other main character in the movie. Elijah has a condition where his bones easily break. He owns a comic book shop called "Limited Edition". Elijah is very serious about his trade. A man comes in saying he is buying an art piece for his son who is very young and Wood tells him to get out because the son would not give it the care it needs. Elijah believes everyone has an opposite person in this world that has strengths where the other has weakness. He believes he's found his opposite person in David Dunn. Elijah contacts David about him possibly having superpowers, but David brushes him off. Elijah goes to many lengths, including breaking himself severely, to prove that David does indeed have these superpowers. But does he? That's the setup for the movie. The rest of the movie is David testing out whether he truly has superpowers and what this would mean for his life and his family's life. There are some very shocking and uplifting moments in the film, but you'll have to watch it as I feel I cannot give spoilers out in case people have not watched it. I was really intrigued by the movie and think it is a well written story that moves slowly, but not enough for you to tire of it. At its base, this movie is a character development study and it succeeds well. I've heard the critiques about the swerve at the end. I personally thought the movie ended wonderfully, but it honestly was not as much of a shock as The Sixth Sense was the first time I saw it. I highly recommend this movie and I also highly recommend watching it at least another time just like The Sixth Sense.

If so, "Mr. Woodcock" is a fine addition to that list; the entire film reliant on the deadpan glare of Thornton and his anvil-like touch with a punchline.

After suffering years of humiliation at the hands of his hard-ass gym teacher Mr. Woodcock (Billy Bob Thornton), John Farley (Seann William Scott) has grown up to become a best-selling self-help author, urging his readers to put their past behind them. Returning home to Nebraska to enjoy the local "Cornival" and accept a citizenship award, John finds his widowed mother (Susan Sarandon) has become engaged to Woodcock, leaving him with the desire to break the two up and ruin Woodcock's life forever.

Shot over two years ago, "Woodcock" should be treated more as a studio misfire oddity than a coherent feature film. It's a hodgepodge of comedy and melodrama, stapled together by massive reshoots, and sold as a dangerous autumn farce (they say cock in the title, hee-hee!). Of course, following a randy summer of "Knocked Up" and "Superbad," "Woodcock" is about as tame as a WB pilot, and retains about the same level of production value. It's a sitcom immersed in the wit of its two lead actors. Too bad those guys are Thornton and Scott.

Purists looking to tear apart this update of Neil Simon's 1972 screenplay, "The Heartbreak Kid," should relax and embrace what the Farrelly Brothers have done with the material. Blending Simon's work with their own frothy brew of filth, they've turned the "Kid" into a scream.

Eddie Cantrow (Ben Stiller) is hungry for love, but unable to find a woman who fits his needs. Into his life comes Lila (Malin Akerman), a gorgeous creature who Eddie can't believe is as perfect as she seems. To avoid a job relocation, Eddie and Lila quickly marry and head to Mexico for their honeymoon. It doesn't take long for Eddie to sense Lila's repulsive personality quirks, which only worsen over the course of their trip. Finding himself in deep martial trouble, Eddie finds comfort in the company of Miranda (Michelle Monaghan). As romance starts to blossom between the two, Eddie contemplates how he can get rid of his wife.

After a steady stream of PG-13 efforts, "Heartbreak Kid" orders Peter and Bobby Farrelly back into the warm waters of the R rating. This is the Farrellys of "Something About Mary" fame, returning an exquisite edge to their comedic pursuits. "Heartbreak" also brings Stiller back into the fold, and the coupling couldn't be more fruitful. For Stiller, last seen in the entertainment whiffle ball "Night at the Museum," "Heartbreak" allows him a chance to raunch it up as well.

While keeping Simon's structure, the new "Heartbreak" quickly tears off to become its own creature. This is a comedy about bubbly energy and smutty delight. It's the Farrellys picking up where they left off with 2000's "Me, Myself & Irene," dishing out a line-up of audience-goosing bits; spiky material that returns a little of the water-cooler visibility they used to enjoy (two words: donkey show).

The character of Lila alone is more than enough ammo for the directors, exploring her acrobatic and uncomfortably violent sexual desires, personal grooming habits (or lack thereof), and the character's general penchant for deviated septumless slapstick. Sold with impressive bravery by Akerman (truly the MVP of the film), Lila's sequences are the barnstormers of "Heartbreak" that pinch the viewer raw.

To best summarize the violent tonal changes that plague "Good Luck Chuck," imagine for a moment if "Bachelor Party" had a subplot concerning the events of 9/11.

The recipient of a curse as a teenager by a spurned goth girl, Chuck has spent his life chasing love, but unable to make progress. When it's revealed his curse allows women he sleeps with the ability to find romantic perfection with the next man they meet, the whole town is calling up Chuck to abuse his gift. When Chuck meets accident-prone Cam (Jessica Alba), he falls in love, but can't seal the deal with her out of fear she'll turn away. With the help of his best friend (Dan Fogler), Chuck is off to rid himself of his powers and win Cam's heart.

I'm doing my best to embrace Dane Cook as a big screen star, but he isn't bringing the thunder like I know he's capable of. Last year's flat-tire comedy "Employee of the Month" muted Cook in an effort to promote him to romantic leading man status, leaving the jokes to unpleasant actors like Dax Shepard and Andy Dick. Why cast Cook only to write him a role that requires the stand-up comic to be a bystander to the fun? Well, that was one of several reasons that made "Employee" one of the worst films of last year.

"Good Luck Chuck" isn't quite the twisting knife "Employee" was, but it furthers the strange beautification of Cook as he lunges to be taken seriously as an actor. More power to him, but he isn't comfortable with himself in front of a camera yet, and "Chuck" is a film that's hasn't the foggiest idea what it wants to say.

"Chuck" opens like a traditional romantic comedy. It holds a jokey premise, contains a meet cute, and revels in the "electricity" between co-stars Cook and Alba. Then, to best explore Chuck's curse, the film transforms into a lewd, slightly graphic sex comedy with a mighty display of naked breasts and more intercourse jokes than you can shake a stick at. Suddenly, we have this unwieldy randy comedy. Soon, "Chuck" switches back to the lovey-dovey material, begging the audience to care about these two crazy kids as they chase the brass ring of love. Then it U-turns back into a slapstick farce. Then it wants weepy hearts again. Back and forth it ping-pongs until it resembles a soupy muck of intentions and performances, offering neither warmth nor humor, just a headache.

The event seems to have jarred loose some memories in the back of his mind. Those glimpses of the past, plus his fury over the murder of his girlfriend in the last film, make him more determined than ever to learn who's responsible for all this, and to deliver the appropriate punishments. That's "Ultimatum" in a nutshell: a sublimely uncomplicated film in which Jason Bourne tries to find the truth and the people who have the truth try to kill Jason Bourne. Directed, as was the last film, by Paul Greengrass ("United 93") and written by Tony Gilroy from Robert Ludlum's novel, "Ultimatum" is as lean, efficient, and ruthless as Bourne himself. Dialogue is used sparingly, but when it's used, it crackles with serious-spy-movie electricity. This movie is not kidding around, and that no-nonsense attitude during all the clever reversals and bruising fight sequences makes it an absolute thrill to watch.

With the news that there was going to be a sequel to 28 Days Later came the inevitable dread of "how bad are they going to screw this one up?" The success of Danny Boyle's 2002 film was a mixed blessing. One of the better horror films to come along in many years, 28 Days Later delivered nearly everything diehard fans of fright flicks could hope for. But it wasn't exactly an open-ended film that left itself screaming for a sequel, at least not artistically. Financially is another thing altogether. Which is why the notion of a sequel was reason for a bit of concern.

The good news is that as far as sequels go, 28 Weeks Later is actually a pretty good movie. Not nearly as good as 28 Days Later, the follow-up suffers in some of the same ways the predecessor did. It runs a bit too long, and feels a bit padded out at times. But all things considered, 28 Weeks Later manages to deliver a solid bit a horror entertainment.

Despite the title, 28 Weeks Later starts off during the height of the plague chronicled in the first film. As the film begins, the highly contagious Rage virus that renders its victims mindless, homicidal maniacs is still sweeping through England. A small band of survivors has taken refuge in a barricaded cottage removed from civilization. Among the survivors are Don (Robert Carlyle) and his wife, whose children were away when Rage hit England, and a group of requisite expendables who will only serve as fodder for the impending slaughter. With the introductions and cursory exposition out of the way, the film launches into its first attack, as a horde of the infected swarm down on the cottage and lay waste to most of the inhabitants. Don flees the scene, cowardly refusing to help his wife, as an army of the infected pursues him across the lush green countryside. The whole sequence is an adrenaline-fueled nightmare, and as good as any of the action/horror sequences in 28 Days Later, and it's just the first fifteen minutes of the movie.

Having narrowly escaped the infected, Don drifts down a river in a small boat, left to wrestle with the guilt of what he has done, and what the future will hold. Fast forward to six months later: The Rage virus has run its course, the last of the infected have starved to death, and England is in the process of rebuilding. With the backing of NATO, the U.S. Army now occupies London, where is has set up blockades, defense perimeters, facilitated the clean up of a decimated nation, and begun helping repopulate. Don is part of a small band of survivors that makes up the population of a tiny district that has been deemed safe. Among a group of British citizens arriving to repopulate London are his children, Andy and Tammy. But things quickly turn sour when the children, who want a photograph of their mother, enter into part of the city that is still under quarantine. When they arrive at their former home, Andy finds his mother, half-crazed, living in the attic, where she has been hiding for who knows how long. The problem is that dear old mommy has been infected with Rage, and though she does not show any of the symptoms, she is a carrier of the disease. Once she is brought to a military complex for testing, it is only a matter of time before all hell breaks loose, and the disease once again begins to spread like wildfire.

It's a grand thing to see "The Simpsons" on the big screen, isn't it? Everyone knows the 18-year-old show show isn't as funny as it used to be, but those of us who still watch it can testify that about every fourth episode is as brilliant as ever.

"The Simpsons Movie" is almost exactly the length of four 22-minute episodes, and sure enough, about one-fourth of it is brilliant. Like most of the TV episodes, the funniest parts are in the first act -- the loopy parodies and freewheeling tangents that dominate before the real plot is introduced. Once the story kicks in, the film has its moments but isn't quite as breathlessly funny as it was in the beginning.

And yet, it's still the funniest movie I've seen this year that wasn't rated R. It has the same anarchic spirit of the TV series, the lightning-fast sight gags, the clever self-awareness, and the amazing ability to satirize modern American life without being cruel. "The Simpsons" can make fun of something you love and you'll still say, "Thank you. May I have another?"

The story comes from the Homer Screws Up and Marge Almost Leaves Him drawer in the big "Simpsons" filing cabinet of plot devices. This time, Homer (voice of Dan Castellaneta) is 1) doing chores around the house, which leads to him 2) getting a pet pig, which naturally leads to 3) the destruction of Lake Springfield, which can only result in 4) the Environmental Protection Agency sealing Springfield inside a protective dome to keep it from infecting the rest of the country. And if those numbered events don't sound like they could really cause the next numbered events to occur, then you must not have watched much of "The Simpsons."

With the entire town furious with Homer, he takes the family and flees. They escape to Alaska, where Marge (Julie Kavner) wonders if she has finally been pushed too far by Homer's cluelessness. Ultimately she decides she must try to save Springfield, and she takes Bart (Nancy Cartwright), Lisa (Yeardley Smith), and baby Maggie with her, leaving Homer to contemplate his fate until an epiphany inspires him to action.

I'm not positive a discussion of quality could even enter a critique of the new film, "D.O.A." Either you're moved by the fist-first filmmaking pledge or you tune out after the first 30 seconds. No doubt, the film is dumb. Real dumb. Gas-huffing-Elly-May dumb. But I'll be damned if this uncontainable piece of junk didn't keep me entertained for a whole 78 minutes.

Three dangerous women: Christie (Holly Valance), Tina (Jamie Pressly), and Princess Kasumi (Devon Aoki), each facing their own personal demons, have been summoned to a far away island for the "D.O.A." fighting competition, run by the billionaire Donovan (Eric Roberts). Once there, the brutal game begins, but as the women begin to scrap their way through the rankings, a darker secret concerning the tournament is revealed. Now, with the help of an insider named Helena (Sarah Carter), the women must band together to stop those who want to harvest their might for evil.

"D.O.A." is based on a series a videogames that I have never played, but being male and of a certain age, have an apple-cheeked awareness of. Featuring scantily-clad women engaging in all sorts of fisticuffs and, er, volleyball, the game made a name for itself due to its violence and titillation factor, leaving the film adaptation wide open when it came to exploiting those possibilities.

Legendary action director Cory Yuen seems the proper man for the job. "D.O.A.," without having an enormous budget to work with, is one of the more visually cutting pictures I've seen in recent months; Yuen and his crew take great pains to inject the frame with a sense of life beyond the expected pow and zap. Hustling known Asian choreography goods, Yuen transforms the action into a nonstop opera of smacks, rarely letting up on the acceleration.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE BALLS OF FURY FROM DVDTALK

I'm honestly stunned to consider how dreadful "Balls of Fury" actually is. This picture had the potential to be the break-out sillyfest of the year, yet nothing comedic sticks to the screen. The film just stumbles around, without any personality or direction, looking for laughs in all the wrong places.

After blowing the 1988 Olympics due to parental issues, Randy Daytona (Dan Fogler) ditched competitive Table Tennis to work the seedy nightclubs of Nevada. When an FBI agent (George Lopez) offers the slob a chance for redemption at evil warlord Feng's (Christopher Walken) underground Ping-Pong tournament, Randy quickly agrees and heads to Master Wong (James Wong) for training. With the help of fellow pupil Maggie (Maggie Q), Randy starts to find his old paddle mojo again, setting him loose in Feng's secret palace where danger lurks everywhere he steps.

Clearly "Fury" is abusing the template from 2004's sleeper smash "Dodgeball," a similar obscure sport farce that had far greater luck sniffing laughs out of the minutiae of elementary school gym class recreation. "Fury" is much more slovenly concoction, figuring the very inclusion of Ping-Pong equals comedy gold, letting the rest of the picture slide by without much thought. I hate to break it to the filmmakers, but Table Tennis just isn't all that funny, no matter how much competitive masculinity is assigned to it.

Writers Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant (who also directs), veterans of the "Reno 911!" franchise, aren't putting in much of an effort with "Fury." Outside of the Ping-Pong theatrics there's nothing to snack on in the script. There's a huge build up to Feng's tournament which promises goofy excitement, but once there, the film wanders away from that potential. Other scenes suffer from the same Post-It note mentality; a loose string of emaciated ideas that probably cracked up the writer's room, but on the screen it looks sloppy and unrehearsed.

Garant tends to lean on his cast for support, which leads directly to the feet of star Dan Fogler. While backed by a series of brief B-list cameos, Maggie Q in skimpy outfits, George Lopez celebrating his 100,000th lame Mexican culture joke, Christopher Walken killing his career further (personally, I blame his obnoxious cowbelled self-awareness), and Jason Scott Lee (as Randy's Chinatown bully) taking a few gulps of theatrical release air before he's sent back to the Blockbuster shelves, "Fury" hinges on Fogler's appeal with far more desperation than I was expecting.

The Movie:

From Mary Lambert, director of the halfway decent Pet Semetary and the awful Pet Semetary II comes the third film in the Urban Legends series (it's really a sequel in name only, and the first to go straight to video), Urban Legends � Bloody Mary.

The film begins in 1969 where three young ladies are drugged at the homecoming prom by their jock dates. Mary Banner (Lillith Fields) manages to escape from them and runs back into the school, but her boyfriend gives chase and winds up cornering her in a back store room. He punches her, she falls down and knocks her head pretty hard. Panicked, he puts her in a chest in the corner of the room, locks it, and leaves her there to die alone.

Fast forward to 2005 and three brand new girls find themselves on the receiving end of some eerily similar treatment from a trio of football players. One of the girls, Samantha (Kate Mara of Nip & Tuck), wrote an article on how football players were awarded school credit just for showing up to practice and they didn't take too kindly to that. What did the big dumb jocks do in retaliation? On the night of the homecoming prom they drugged the three girls and left them in the basement of an old abandoned building, sending their friends and families into a panic.

Soon, the guilty parties start showing up dead in some rather unusual ways that seem to live up to a few of the tales that have been told as of late. You see, the three girls were having a slumber party and discussing urban legends, the legend of Bloody Mary in particular, and when they spoke her name three times they unwittingly unleashed the fury of the ghost of Mary Banner who is out to get revenge on the people involved in her death by killing off their children. Samantha and her brother, David (Robert Vito), track down the only remaining girl from that fateful night way back in 1969, Grace Taylor (Tina Lifford of Hostage), to see if she can help, but it might already be too late to stop Bloody Mary from exacting her revenge.

It is spring, 480 BC Persian King Xerxes, continuing his fathers, Darius, master plan to conquer the Hellenic city-states, arrives in Hellas. The previous Persian invasion and diplomatic attempts have already turned most northern Hellas tribes and states to the Persian side. But the people of Athens and Sparta, the largest Hellenic powers at the time, feel quite insulted by the Persian emissaries requesting their surrender to Xerxes and slay them. In Sparta, King Leonidas consults the local oracle, which gives two options: either a spartan king will have to be sacrificed or Sparta will be burned to the ground. A year earlier (481, BC) a panhellenic consortium of all southern city-states have already recognized the superiority of the spartan army (the best organized and trained army at the time) and have announced King Leonidas supreme commander of the combined Hellenic army. It is then decided that a small force should block Xerxes' way to southern Hellas in the Thermopylae passage.This passage was at that time 12 meters wide.The great historian Herodotus, possibly exaggerating, states that there were 1700000 Persians(their true number could be anywhere around 100000 and 1000000) against 7000 Hellenic hoplites and slaves, including the 300 men of the spartan king elite guard. King Xerxes waited for 4 days for the Hellenes to be frightened and eventually surrender and was quite astonished by his opponents complete apathy who were following their daily program practicing and making their hair! After that Xerxes tried to convince Leonidas to drop weapons, give up his position, kneel before him and live on as a local governor under Xerxes. King Leonidas replied "molon lave", which means "Come and get them". Then the 3 days battle begun with the 300 Spartans, and 700 thespians (the other Hellenes where sent by Leonidas to protect passages to their flanks) slaying thousands of Persians with minimal losses. The whole Persian campaign would have fail if there wasn't Efialtes who showed Xerxes a secret passage to the Hellenic flanks. After a final battle lead by king Xerxes himself the Hellenic force was completely slain and their heroism and glory was written forever in history. From the beginning of the battle the Hellenes buried their dead in the spot they fell dead. After the battle signs where made for the dead of each Hellenic faction. For the pelloponisians generally (including the 300 Spartans) the sign reads(free translation) 'In this place 4000 thousand pelloponisians fought 30 millions), for the 300 Spartans(lakaedaemonians) especially the sign reads(free translation) 'Oh foreigner tell the lakaedaemonians that we are buried here obeying their laws' meaning that they never hesitated and never retreated from the enemy. The impact of the battle was enormous for both sides. The Persians' morale dropped to zero and the Hellenes lost their fear for the Persian conqueror and organized their defense. The Movie: Who by now has not heard the tale of King Leonidas and the brave 300 who kept the uncountable numbers of Xerxes' Persian Army at bay, at the cost of their own lives? And if this glorious feat of ancient history was destined to be relayed only as an aside in history classes around the world, it spurred enough interest in author Frank Miller (best known for The Dark Knight Returns and Sin City) to pen a graphic novel retelling the story, albeit with a twist. And now Miller's version has been immortalized as a feature film by director Zack Snyder (the Dawn of the Dead remake, the director of the upcoming Watchmen adaptation). And while the ads for it certainly looked exciting, no one expected the runaway success the film had in early 2007, making over $70 million in its opening weekend, and over $200 million overall.

King Leonidas of Sparta (Gerard Butler), born and bred for war, is met by a messenger of the Persian King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), hellbent on conquering the known world. The messenger requests that Sparta give an offering of earth and water, as a symbol of their submission to Xerxes' rule. Despite the misgivings of some on the Spartan High Council, Leonidas rejects the offer and prepares to go to war. But before he does, he must get the blessing of the Spartan oracle. Unfortunately, the priests of the oracle have been paid off by Xerxes, and they declare that Sparta is not to go to war under any circumstances. Bound by ancient laws he dare not break, Leonidas makes a desperate gamble and takes 300 of his best warriors to fight, as a personal bodyguard. These men face legions of Persian soldiers, so numerous that their marches shake the very ground. But these Persians face not just men, they face Spartans. And they, they shall learn is no small thing indeed, as wave after wave of Persian attack break against the Spartans like water against rock.

There was a King Leonidas of Sparta. He did lead his army to fight the Persians. At his last stand, he had 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians at his command. The days that Leonidas held off the Persians allowed the Athenian Navy to collect themselves and eventually defeat Xerxes. This is known as The Battle of Thermopylae. Beyond these details, there is very little connecting the actual historical events to 300, whether we're discussing Miller's graphic novel or Snyder's cinematic adaptation. Miller was not interested in a line for line retelling. He used the battle, and the story of the 300 as a symbol. A symbol of freedom, a symbol of glory, pride, and bravery. That he throws in mythical beasts, grotesque creatures, and massive exaggerations matters not. They're included to make the telling more grand, to make the Spartans victory that more astonishing. Prequal to the 2003 version of 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' is set in 1969, the height of the Vietnam War. When Hewitt finds out what is happening, he savagely murders the foreman of the plant. Meanwhile, the two young men and their girlfriends are headed down a lonely highway towards the town when they are involved in an car accident that cripples their vehicle. Soon they encounter the local sheriff, who is not really the sheriff, but the homicidal Charlie Hewitt, the uncle of Leatherface who has murdered the sheriff and taken his job and police car knowing that with the town deserted, no one will notice. Uncle Charlie/Sheriff Hoyt kidnaps three of the teens and takes them to his home where he, Leatherface Hewitt, the senile Uncle Monty, and Charlie's sister, Luda Mae, reside. The cause of some controversy upon its theatrical release based on the intensity and severity of the violence that was so prevalent throughout the movie, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning did prove to be reasonably popular at the box office despite the highly touted cuts required from the MPAA for the film to earn an R rating rather than a dreaded NC-17. New Line has now reinserted that grisly footage and put it back into the movie with this un-rated DVD release (those who want the R-rated cut can rest easy, as that version is available as well - albeit as a seperate release).

When the movie begins, a woman gives birth to a deformed baby inside a derelict slaughterhouse somewhere deep in the heart of Texas. The freakish infant is left in a dumpster to die when a woman finds him and takes him home to raise him as her own. Fast forward a few years into the future and the little boy has grown up to be Tommy Hewitt (Andrew Bryniarski, reprising his role from the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to which this film serves as a prequel), a hulking and somewhat retarded man who spends his days working at what one can only assume is the same slaughterhouse where he was born. When that place is condemned by the government and shut down, Tommy refuses to leave until his employer insists he split which lands the poor sap on his deathbed. On the way out, Tommy grabs a chainsaw.

The toilet mugging Ghoulies was first into theaters, trailed the following year by the slightly more overt, yet oddly beloved knockoff Critters. It began as the story of eight alien escapees known as "Crites" who lamb it to Earth when an asteroid prison fails to suit their tastes. These toothy creature creations of the Chiodo Brothers then proceed to FEED on hayseeds, lay slimy sequel-friendly EGGS and generally behave badly through four dang-near IDENTICAL flicks. The Movie

Zoom: Academy for Superheroes is a family-oriented action/comedy about a small group of youthful degenerates turned superheroes. It is based on the comic book "Zoom's Academy". The movie debuted in summer of 2006 and had big names like Tim Allen, Courtney Cox, and Chevy Chase to pull in viewers. In general, the movie was not well received by audiences and had very bad marks from the media. The reason is that "Zoom" is a typical, cliched film with cheap attempts at humor and a storyline seen far too many times. Despite its bad qualities, I enjoyed it (to a certain degree). Read on to find out more...

Once long ago, Zoom (Tim Allen) and his brother Concussion (Kevin Zegers) were part of a top secret government project called the Zenith program. Dr. Grant (Chevy Chase) was the lead scientist on the program. Zoom, Concussion, and three others had shown special abilities as children. The government took them into this project and exposed them to Gamma 13 radiation to make them stronger, faster, and all-around more powerful. At first, everything went well. Zoom and his fellows were successful in their endeavors. Unfortunately, Concussion developed side effects to the Gamma 13 radiation and turned on his teammates. Zoom was able to overcome Concussion and send him into an alternative dimension. But it didn't happen without cost, as Concussion had killed the other team members.

Approximately thirty years later, the world is in need of another superhero team when a new threat emerges. General Larraby (Rip Torn), who runs Area 52 (the military installation that housed the Zenith program), sends Dr. Grant to recall the world's only remaining superhero back into action. Zoom, now in his human identity of Jack Shepard, is out of shape and runs an auto repair shop. Grant and psychologist Marsha (Courtney Cox) convince Jack to help them train a new batch of superheroes in a short time frame of twelve days.

The team of superheroes includes four youthful, troubled kids who have never fit in because of their abilities make them oddballs. Dylan (Michael Cassidy) has the ability to turn invisible. He is a brash, typical bad boy who likes to rebel against authority. Summer (Kate Mara) is an unpopular girl at school because everyone thinks she is weird. She has extensive telekinetic ability and an aptitude for foresight. Tucker (Spencer Breslin) is an obese kid who always is shoving some kind of snack into his mouth. He has an odd power, which is the ability to expand his body at will (imagine a balloon inflating). The last member is Cindy (Ryan Newman). She is a young six year old girl with superhuman strength.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE SICK FROM DVDTALK

When Michael Moore makes a movie these days, all hell seems to break loose. It gets to a point where whatever message he's trying to communicate is drowned out by all the media attention, knee-jerk reactionaries, and general resentment. With "Sicko," Moore is embarking on a topic that is vital to the might of America, seeded with a message that everyone in the country should be, at the very least, aware of. This is health care, and it is killing our nation.

Of course, I've been a great admirer of Moore's for some time, always willing to embrace his big screen pole vaults of satire and acidic truth. "Sicko" comes after the unreal success of "Fahrenheit 9/11," a picture that gave Moore the most power he's ever enjoyed and sent his loudest critics into a spastic, wildly entertaining Curly-shuffle of frustration. It comes as little surprise that Moore, now with the world's attention, has selected the hornet's nest issue of health care for his latest picture.

"Sicko" is a persuasive piece of "informational entertainment," (perhaps "documentary" no longer covers what Moore is trying to accomplish here), picking up a rock and throwing at the fanged, mile-high, tentacled beast called privatized health care. It's a spectacular look at America and the corruption that rots our very core, swallowing the interests of our leaders and mercilessly disposing of our most needy. Did I mention the film is a comedy?

Narrated by and appearing in the second half of the film is Moore, who is astounded that his country is unwilling to fix what clearly is a broken system. "Sicko" isn't a comprehensive argument for repair, but it isn't meant to be. Moore gives the viewer enough examples of failure and deception to cook up a frothy stew of amazement and poignancy, spending time with the individuals instead of a flow chart of indifference. Not every corner of health care is exposed; Moore leaves that minutiae to the political pundits, as they chase their tails to a point of exhaustion and social irresponsibility. Instead, Moore paints a dramatic picture of the way things are headed, and his point of view is shocking.

"Donnie Darko" was one of the most talked about films at Sundance last year, a film that looked to be a success story once it eventually released theaters. Unfortunately, the studio didn't seem to be quite sure about how to market a film that largely revolves around a disturbed teenager who recieves prophetic warnings from a large, talking rabbit (possibly the cousin of the Mothman from this year's "Mothman Prophecies".) Newmarket (who also released "Memento") should have built up a wider release, but did not. The film soon dissapeared from theaters, snapped up by Fox Home Video for a DVD release. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Donnie, said troubled teen who, as the movie begins, has just started taking his medication again. Shortly after, the visions begin to appear. Frank, a six-foot-tall individual who wears a bunny suit and an insect-ish face, casually informs Donnie that the world will end just under a month. If Donnie had not ventured into the outdoors to hear more, he would have been in his room, which is demolished by a jet engine that falls out of the sky while he'd taken the stroll.
