Last year's "Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector" was a no-brainer comedic skid mark. It didn't take any energy to loathe it, and the film didn't exactly court quality with a screenplay written on cocktail napkins in magic marker and its ten-cent production polish. "Delta Farce" is the follow-up, and while I could say the quality of Larry's feature film work has improved, that isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for the picture. It's like saying drowning is more welcome than being set on fire.

Larry (Larry The Cable Guy), Bill (Bill Engvall), and Everett (DJ Qualls) are three Army reservists lacking every conceivable skill a good soldier should have. On their way to the battlefields of Iraq, led by their bellowing commanding officer (Keith David), the trio fall asleep on the plane, accidentally jettison themselves, and wake up in the middle of a desert...in Mexico. Stuck in a small village, the military stooges need to screw up their courage when a group of Mexican outlaws, led by Carlos Santana (Danny Trejo), come by looking for trouble.

It used to be one of the more meaningful motion picture metaphors: sports as a microcosm of life. All throughout the early days of cinema, when motion and action were mandatory to keep audiences interested in the fledgling artform, through the glory days of classic studio system films, athletes and the games they play have provided the backdrop for discussions of courage, leadership, discipline and self-discovery. But in the post-modern era, all that has changed. Championing the underdog, rooting for the good guys, using competition as a moralizing mannerism to determine the superior from the sad has become the order of the day. Without some adversity to overcome, a last act challenge to rise up to, and a god-like leader who provides tough love and selfless motivation within a context of team and trying, the current sports film is lost. These are the clichéd confines that something like Gridiron Gang must break out of. Sadly, it can only embrace, not erase, the archetypes.

It's not overt sentimentality either, just this odd way the film conducts business bloodlessly, hitting latter plot points like an assembly-line worker.

Kate (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is a feisty, control-freak executive chef who's recently inherited her mousy niece Zoe (Abigail Breslin) after her sister dies in a car accident. While Kate is away taking care of Zoe, her restaurant hires Nick (Aaron Eckhart) as her new sous chef, and he wins over the crowds with his relaxed approach to cooking. Kate bristles at the competition, but the chemistry between them is combustible, leading Kate down an anxious path where she's forced to open up her heart and embrace other people for a change.

Stop me if you've heard this one before: an inexperienced singer, fueled by hopes of stardom, rises from poverty to become a sensation, marries the girl of his dreams, and then loses it all to...wait for it...drugs! Now how many times have we shuffled down this road? Perhaps there will come a time when a musical bio-pic doesn't hang its hat on misery, but at the end of the day, "El Cantante" is pretty darn good despite the odious familiarity of the ingredients.

Hector Lavoe (Marc Anthony) is a Puerto Rican kid hunting for fame in New York City during the 1960s. Finding the call of the burgeoning salsa movement spoke to his talents, Lavoe took to the stage and refused to back down for over 30 years. His success afforded Lavoe luxuries beyond imagination, including a wife, Puchi (Jennifer Lopez), who adored him and a buffet of drugs, which he took to as easily as the music, sliding him into a depressive state that killed his career and took his life in 1993.

As the 2003 summer movie season drew to a close, I was somewhat puzzled that Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines didn't generate more excitement during its theatrical run. Helmed by experienced action director Jonathan Mostow (Breakdown, U-571), T3 is a way-above-average summer spectacle that triumphantly confirms the Terminator saga as one of the most satisfying in science-fiction cinema. I concede that the early trailers for the film didn't inspire the average moviegoer (including myself) with confidence. But fortunately, T3 crashed through the low expectations engineered by its trailer and really delivered.

I remember sitting in the theater, just waiting for T3 to suck. I was sure that moment would arrive at some point—that sighing moment of sagging hope—and my head would drop, and I would repeatedly wince, and I would let the movie stagger toward its end credits. But that moment never came. In fact, the more T3 unspooled before me, the more I found myself excited by its action spectacle, its true characters, and its relentless and inevitable crash course toward its conclusion. And what a conclusion! This is a movie with guts, and largely because of that, it's one of my favorites of the year.

Ramis was lucky to have a cast who liven up the material greatly. Rodney Dangerfield and Chevy Chase are extremely funny, as is Bill Murray, but Ted Knight plays the cliche comedy villian. The story revolves around Danny Noonan(O'Keefe) who is trying to get the new scholarship for caddies. "Run" by Judge Smails(Knight), the rest of the story focuses on the the war that's going on on the course between Smails, the new golfer played by Dangerfield and the zen-master played by Chase. A second, and funnier battle is going on at the same time between Bill Murray's groundskeeper and a local gopher.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE GRINDHOUSE FROM DVDTALK

As an exercise in aging-movie-geek nostalgia, "Grindhouse" is a bloody good time. It's an homage to the theaters of the 1960s and '70s that would show double features or marathons of schlocky, exploitative films -- kung fu flicks, blaxploitation, zombie movies, spaghetti Westerns -- the kinds of films whose titles and posters were always more creative than the movies themselves. Gratuitous violence and nudity were the rule. The prints were usually scratchy and damaged, having been run through a thousand projectors a thousand times already. My description comes from a purely historical, not personal, standpoint. For the most part, the grindhouse theaters died with the '70s, and it's a good bet that the vast majority of "Grindhouse's" target audience has never actually been to one. We've seen some of the films, sure, but mostly on video or at midnight screenings at the local college theater. The whole grindhouse experience -- the battered prints, the noisy projector, the salacious coming attractions -- that's all academic. We're taking Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's word for it that this is how it was.

Steven Spielberg surprised everyone last summer. His remake of The War of the Worlds is an intelligent and engrossing updating of the original H.G. Wells book, delivered with an intensity seen in few previous science fiction movies.

That's really quite an accomplishment for several reasons. When Hollywood remakes a Sci Fi classic the result is usually a disaster, as with 1986's Invaders from Mars or 1988's The Blob. The remakes fail because their specific fantasies, perfect for a particular time and place, are no longer relevant. It's like telling a bedtime story to adults - not only are they bored with the same plot, they miss Mom and Dad's bedtime manner. The rare movie that improves on the original -- Cronenberg's The Fly is the best example - re-thinks the original concept for a new era. The 1958 Fly functions well enough when regarded from a certain nostalgic angle. The '85 Fly is a much more complex fusion of fears and anxieties.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE RATATOUILLE FROM DVD TALK

With the brilliant animated films "Iron Giant" and "The Incredibles" already under his belt, writer-director Brad Bird comes to "Ratatouille" with great expectations heaped upon him. Adding to the pressure is the fact that many people viewed "Cars," Pixar's last effort, as representing a slight decline in quality after such acclaimed efforts as "Finding Nemo," "Monsters Inc.," and Bird's own "Incredibles."

"Cars" must have been an anomaly, then, because "Ratatouille" is as almost as funny, joyful, and heartfelt as anything that Pixar's merry band of genius-nerds has ever done. We're at the point now where you can just say, "It's a Pixar movie," and that sums it up.

Our hero is Remy (voice of Patton Oswalt), a rat of undetermined age who lives with his colony in the French countryside near Paris. He is unique among rats because he has a refined palate. While everyone else sees mere garbage and feasts upon it, he sees the individual ingredients and is appalled by them. Like so many of his Disney brethren before him, he yearns for something more than this humdrum existence! He longs to dine on tasty foods exquisitely prepared. He wishes he were someplace where his gourmet sensibilities were appreciated, not mocked, as they are by his father (Brian Dennehy) and simple-minded brother (Peter Sohn). (Another thing Remy shares in common with his Disney brethren is that he does not seem to have a mother.)

An emergency forces the rats out of their dwelling into the sewers, where Remy is separated from the group and winds up, as luck would have it, in the crawl space at Gusteau's, the finest restaurant in all of France! The late Chef Gusteau (Brad Garrett) was famous for his "Anyone can cook!" philosophy. Remy has seen reruns of his TV show, courtesy of the old woman whose attic the rats used to live in, who frequently fell asleep in front of the TV. Now the spirit of Gusteau appears to Remy as a guide, a conscience, and a figment of his imagination, encouraging him to follow his dreams.

From Remy's vantage point in the ceiling, we see the kitchen at Gusteau's. The new chef is Skinner (Ian Holm), a short, angry little man who has sold out Gusteau's name to merchandisers, with microwaveable products like Gusteau's BBQ Dip 'n Ribs now in your grocer's freezer. The restaurant's five-star rating has dwindled to three, due in part to negative reviews from the great food critic Anton Ego (Peter O'Toole), an austere, humorless man who takes no pleasure in anything. The restaurant is surviving, but just barely.

Skinner is obligated to hire a clean-up boy named Linguini (Lou Romano), an awkward young fellow whose mother was a friend of Gusteau's back in the day. Linguini doesn't want to become a chef, particularly, recognizing he has no talent for the culinary arts; he can barely take out the trash without screwing it up.

Through a series of hilarious and strangely logical events (if you can accept that a rat understands human speech and knows how to cook), Remy and Linguini become partners. Remy can cook, but he's a rat. Linguini is in the kitchen and has the opportunity to make something of himself, but he has no skills. Together, they can do it. Or as Linguini sums it up to his new rat friend, "You know how to cook, and I know how to appear human!"

Soon Linguini is the toast of the town, elevating Gusteau's back to its original place of prominence. He prepares his masterpieces by putting Remy under his chef's hat, where the rodent pulls Linguini's hair like a rider controlling a horse's reins, guiding him to the right ingredients and preparations. No one can know his secret -- they would think he was crazy if he told them a rat was his mentor -- and Skinner becomes increasingly jealous and suspicious of this gawky new prodigy.

I am delighted by every aspect of the film, from Michael Giacchino's perfectly breezy score, to the whimsically bizarre storyline (how does anyone even think of something like this?), to the way that crazy story is brought to life reasonably and intelligently by Bird's nuanced script. There is a surprising complexity to the film, with multiple relationships being juggled all at once. There's Remy's connection to his dad and brother, his conflicting desire to be a gourmet chef, Linguini's crush on fellow cook Colette (Janeane Garofalo), Remy's association with Colette (they're both competing for attention from Linguini), Skinner's paranoia that there's a rat living in the kitchen. The rightful ownership of the Gusteau brand name comes into play, as does Remy's desire to stop being a "thief" (that's what rats are, you know). And somehow, Anton Ego figures into the whole thing.

The comparative ease with which computer-animated films can now be made has led to a rash of bad ones: "Hoodwinked," "Happily N'Ever After," "Everyone's Hero," "Madagascar," and so forth. Enduring those movies' gracelessness makes you appreciate it all the more when someone comes along and does it right. "Ratatouille" is packed with beautiful images of Paris, drawn to look quaint and old-style, though the film is apparently set in the present. There are imaginative camera angles and movement, and a stunning attention to detail. The characters move and emote with fluidity, not stiffly, the way some films would have it. Even the way Skinner pours a glass of wine, with that slight rotation of the bottle at the end of the pour, is perfectly rendered. Pixar has, once again, raised the bar on the technical side of making an animated film.

The non-technical elements don't lack, either, though it's fair to say it's not the most emotionally overwhelming thing Pixar has done. It doesn't pack the punch of "Toy Story 2" or "Finding Nemo," for example; the characters, while engaging and sympathetic, don't connect with the audience at quite that level. That's more an observation than a complaint, though. There really isn't much at all that I would change about this visual, imaginative feast.

Some filmmakers seem to be doing multi-tasking lately. Barry Levinson did it with "Sphere", where his "Wag The Dog" was done on a break from "Sphere". Robert Zemeckis ended up filming the horrid "What Lies Beneath" between what I think is actually one of his best works and certainly one of the year's very best. "Cast Away" is not a perfect film, but at it's best moments it is a marvelous, moving picture that is held together by a brilliant performance from Tom Hanks. Before I go further into the review, I will probably talk about some details of the plot, but since the trailer has already given away more than it should have, I will go forward with the discussion. The film revolves around Chuck Noland(Hanks) a Fedex troubleshooter who, as we open the film, find organizing a Russian outpost, coaching them on the importance of time. He returns home, pleased to be able to put "time" aside to spend Christmas with his girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt). But, mid-dinner, he finds himself called away to Malaysia. The plane ride suddenly gets into trouble with a storm and, in one of the most terrifying sequences I've seen in quite a while, the plane crashes into the ocean.

One imagines if you're sharing a bill with a fella who prefers action over oration there'd be a certain pressure to fill the silence, yet even the most ardent Freddy fan's gotta be dumbstruck by how Kruger's aged into such a yammering yenta. Perhaps it's some sad boogeyman strain of Alzheimers that encourages this incessant yapping about "his children forgetting" and how Jason Voorhees is his errand boy outside of Dreamland. More likely, it's rooted with Tinseltown's post-Scream fixation on horror "rules" and overall penchant for leading audiences through most movies by cracking plot point after plot point over their skulls. Presumably pleasing for some random focus group of yayhoos. Goldang annoying to those of us with opposable thumbs. But, but, but Freddy and Jason FIGHT, right!?! Well, yeah, they most assuredly do, as in the grand tradition of terror titan bouts dating back as far as when Frankenstein first looked crossways at the Wolf Man.

The Movie:

Florent Siri's 2005 action/thriller Hostage was a bit of a sleeper. I think a lot of people expected crazy Matrix style action scenes and rapid fire editing but instead what they got was a clever and suspenseful film with good performances and an emphasis on the story as opposed to the gun play.

Bruce Willis plays Jeff Talley, a tough guy with a big heart (a real stretch for Willis there) who used to be a hostage negotiator who has since taken a job as the chief of police in a small California town after a young boy was killed on his last big job, shot to death by his crazed father.

The Movie

The producers of Guess Who would have been better off naming it Ebony & Ivory or Big Black Daddy or just about anything else, because connecting it in any way to the classic race-relations film Guess Who's Coming to Dinner was to doom the movie to comparisons it didn't need and couldn't stand up to. You don't put Tara Reid in a movie about publishing and call it Kane. You're just inviting trouble, especially when the only real similarity between the two films is the set-up. Instead of a white girl bringing a black guy home to meet her family, the races are reversed, as Theresa (Zoe Saldana, Pirates of the Caribbean), brings Simon (Kutcher) home to meet her family. After that, this movie bears little resemblance to the Stanley Cramer film.

So, in fairness to this film, I will be reviewing Big Black Daddy instead. In Big Black Daddy, Simon has to curry favor with Percy (Bernie Mac), his girlfriend's father, after he is surprised to find out that Simon isn't the "brother" he expected. Percy is a tough, traditional man who loves his daughters and doesn't trust any man with them, going so far as to pull a credit report on him. Meanwhile, Simon's got bigger problems than Percy, but because of them, he has to lie to his host.

On "Saturday Night Live," Will Ferrell was a utility player. He could play regular guys -- fathers, businessmen, doctors -- as well as bizarre characters, central or supporting. And in any case, he was nearly always funny. He improved almost every sketch he was in. He's now doing for movies what he did for "SNL": He's always funny, even if the films he's in don't quite cut it. In "Blades of Glory," he plays Chazz Michael Michaels, a disgraced, bad-boy figure-skater (an "ice dancing sex tornado," someone calls him) who returns to competition by teaming up with his former rival to create the first-ever same-sex figure-skating pair. Ferrell is a comedic workhorse, as usual, with his mix of physical awkwardness and verbal non-sequiturs ("I could not love a human baby as much as I love this brush!" he says of his favorite hair-styling appliance), but the film is only slightly better than so-so. I think Ferrell is a genius, but there's only so much even a genius can do.

After the game, Jay invites Chris and his friends to spend the night in his casino on him, but when Chris finds that the casino stick-man is cheating with the dices, he fights against the security men and is almost killed by them. When his nephew Pete has an OD with amphetamines sold by the security men of the casino, Chris realizes that the town is dominated by the mobsters and the corrupt sheriff and with a huge piece of wood, he breaks the casino and the criminals. He is prosecuted and in the trial, he promises to the jury and to the population that if he is considered non-guilty, he would be candidate to the sheriff position and clean the town. The�Movie

Walking Tall is the latest action film from charismatic wrestler-turned-action hero The Rock, and all at once it demonstrates exactly how The Rock is primed to inherit the action movie mantle form such previous stalwarts as Arnie, Sly, and Chuck, while at the same time limiting his potential by surrounding him in silly, demographically-marketed material in order to maximize his appeal to a greater cross section of filmgoers.

I refer, of course, to the insipid PG-13, popcorn-munching, huzzah-to-the-good guys attitude that permeates Walking Tall. A remake of the 1973 film from director Phil Karlson and starring Joe Don Baker as the legendary Buford Pusser, the movie features The Rock as Chris Vaughn, a Special Forces veteran who has returned to his home-town after years of military service. Looking (nay, yearning) to return to a simpler life working at the local mill, Vaughn finds the mill closed down and his hometown overrun by the crooked dealings of the local casino, operated by an old acquaintance Jay Hamilton (Neal McDonough). After visiting the casino and discovering the crap tables to be cheating with loaded dice, Vaughn gets accosted, beaten, sliced up, and left on the side of the road. Soon after his recovery, his nephew Pete (Khleo Thomas) suffers from a crystal meth overdose, and Vaughn learns that the drugs are originating out of Hamilton's casino. Enraged, he grabs a 4x4 and engages in a one-man rampage, smashing slot machines, overturning gaming tables, and breaking the bones of security officers. Arrested and put on trial, Vaughn makes a courtroom plea that his town used to "walk tall", and that, if acquitted, he would clean the whole damn thing up as Sheriff. Needless to say, cut to a scene in which Vaughn is cruising around town with his shiny new Sheriff's badge, cedar 4x4 in hand and buddy/deputy Ray (Johnny Knoxville) by his side, determined to root out the corruption flowing like torrents out of Hamilton's casino.

Serving as a sort of racial Short Cuts, writer/director Paul Haggis' Crash is a soulful, compelling and flawed ensemble drama that showcases some stellar performances but ultimately strays into didacticism � it's raw, it's darkly funny and it's certainly provocative, but the occasional missteps keep this film from truly achieving greatness.
