HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III FROM DVDTALK

The Movie

For all the couch-jumping craziness, Scientology oddity, creepy romances with budding ingenues and public spankings from corporate overlords, one fact got somewhat lost in the shuffle: Mission: Impossible III (or M:I:III if you're nasty) is a damn fine return to form. The M:I franchise was on life support after John Woo's artful but inert 2000 sequel to Brian De Palma's invigorating 1996 adaptation of the Sixties TV classic, one of the better films of the Nineties. Overblown and drained of any real spy-centric sequences, Mission: Impossible II often felt like a trailer in search of a film; Cruise's sizzle-less chemistry with Thandie Newton, that absurdly protracted fist-fight between Cruise and the bland Dougray Scott, as well as a needlessly overheated plot didn't exactly help matters either.

Some time away from the material seems to have rejuvenated both Cruise and the creative team — after cycling through a series of directors who came close to pulling the trigger but ultimately walked away (including David Fincher and Joe Carnahan), Cruise ingeniously tapped "Felicity," "Alias" and "Lost" mastermind J.J. Abrams to overhaul the ailing series and start fresh, from both a screenplay and directorial standpoint. It's a move that worked, but in all of Cruise's self-sabotaging PR bumbles, might have been obscured — fortunately, now that much of the TomKat madness has subsided, Mission: Impossible III can be appreciated for what it is: a top-shelf Hollywood summer blockbuster, served up with panache and wit and featuring one of the more chillingly realized villains of 2006, Owen Davian (played with obvious relish by Capote Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman).

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE OFFICE SPACE FROM DVD TALK.

The Movie:

"Office Space" was released in the early weeks of 1999 with little fanfare and not much advertising. The movie was quickly bumped out of theaters and ended up with a gross of a little over $10m. The movie then became an enormous hit on DVD, and the cult following the film has attracted has only grown since.

Directed by Mike Judge ("Beavis and Butthead"), "Space" stars Ron Livington as Peter, a worker at a generic tech company as software engineers. He's introduced in the middle of morning traffic, veering between lanes to try and get ahead, but only finding himself still locked in the bumper-to-bumper traffic. Looking over to the side of the road, he spots an old man with a walker who looks like he's getting to his destination faster than Peter is. Once he arrives at work, he is told by three different managers that he forgot to add the new cover letter to his report.

Deeply dismayed with his current employment ("I was sitting in my cubicle today and realized that every single day of my life has worse than the day before it, so every single day that you see me is on the worst day of my life."), he eventually agrees to see an occupational therapist recommended by his irritable girlfriend. When the therapist has a heart attack in the middle of the treatment, Peter has something of a "break" - he decides to persue his dreams of doing nothing ("I did absolutely nothing, and it was everything I thought it could be.") He sleeps late, doesn't come in on weekends if he's asked, and tries to romance the waitress (Jennifer Aniston) at the chain restaurant next door. He's not going to quit - he's just going to essentially stop going.

Meanwhile, "consultants" have been brought in, and everyone knows they're there to decide who stays and who goes. Peter, who strolls in without a care, ends up managing to impress them enough not only to not fire him, but to actually give him a promotion. Despite that, Peter and friends Michael (David Herman), and Samir (Ajay Naidu) decide to go ahead with a plan to take money from the company through a program that will take off little bits of change from every transaction. Needless to say, it doesn't go according to plan.

Full of quotable lines and hilarious moments, "Office Space" gets all the details right and the laughs do often operate on the fact that almost everyone finds themselves at a job like this at one time or another (I once worked at an office doing data entry and no one really told me what to do. While I worked there for an entire Summer, I didn't find out until the last day that I had been doing an aspect of the job wrong for months. Every day, every one went to their cubicle and there was barely any communication.) However, the film's spin on office culture is funny and sharply realized, with "we all have wanted to it at one time or another" moments like when the three take the troublesome printer out behind the office and destroy it. The film's use of rap music is also nothing short of priceless.

The performances are terrific, as well. Gary Cole's boss is a classic character, droning out every word of every sentence and offering a flat, insincere thanks when he snares someone to come in to work additional hours on the weekend. Livington is a great "everyguy", and Naidu and Herman are superb as his co-workers. Aniston makes something out of a pretty minimal part, and convincingly plays an average girl tired of having to wear "flair" on her uniform at the restaurant. Finally, Stephen Root ("Newsradio") is amusing as quiet, mumbling worker Milton (the film is based on Judge's "Milton" animated shorts).

"Office Space" is shot in a pretty minimalist way by Judge (his first live-action effort), but the characters and dialogue work supremely well and absolutely carry the movie.

The DVD

VIDEO: "Office Space" is presented by Fox in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen (the previous DVD edition was non-anamorphic), "Office Space" still isn't the strongest movie visually, but the picture quality is noticably better this time around. Sharpness and detail are improved, as the picture appeared consistently more detailed and crisp this time around.

Additionally, the picture looks smoother and more "film like" here, with no edge enhancement, pixelation or shimmering. There are some moments where some minor specks are spotted on the print, but these are pretty minor and not distracting. Colors appeared somewhat richer here, and black level looked solid. Overall, while the prior release didn't look too bad, I was pleased to see that this new transfer does certainly look better.

SOUND: "Office Space" is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1. This is the same audio presentation as the prior release. Largely a "comedy"-style presentation, the majority of the audio comes from the front speakers, with the surrounds only providing minimal reinforcement. The rap songs on the soundtrack deliver some solid bass, but otherwise this is a fairly straightforward, dialogue-driven audio presentation.

EXTRAS: "Out of the Office" is a nearly 30-minute "look back" documentary that has Judge and the cast talking about their thoughts on the film, their characters and working on the film. It's only in the last quarter of the documentary that we learn more about things like a potential PG-13 rating, the popular Swingline stapler, and the reaction to the movie. The featurette does have some fun interviews with the cast and a few insights, but there's a lot of time spent on praising each other and quite a few movie clips added in. Some outtakes from John C. McGinley are also added in during his segment, and are quite funny.

Also offered here are eight deleted scenes presented in rough form, with no optional commentary. Some of the scenes are quite funny, and I thought a couple should have been included in the movie. There's also the trailer, and some additional DVD-ROM content (audio clips, an interactive game, wallpaper, screensaver and more.)

Final Thoughts: "Office Space" remains a smart and hilarious office comedy, with great performances and memorable characters and dialogue. Fox's new Special Edition doesn't offer much in the way of supplements (a commentary from Judge or the cast would have been nice), but image quality does get a boost here.

REDLINE NOW AVAILABLE

REDLINE NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

HERE IS THE SUMMARY FOR THE MOVIE REDLINE FROM IMDB

"Redline" is an auto/action thriller that features the personal exotic car collection of the producer, real estate investor Daniel Sadek. Sadek who is financing the $26 million movie used his own cars including a Phantom Rolls Royce, Lamborghini Murcielago, Enzo Ferrari, Ferrari F430, Ferrari Scaglietti and two Mercedes SLR McLarens. Sadek's $450,000 Porsche Carrera GT is actually crashed during one sequence. Eddie Griffin accidentally crashed and destroyed the Enzo Ferrari, one of only 400 ever produced. Written by Deidre Woollard

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE REDLINE FROM DVDTALK

"Redline" is based on a fantasy of filthy rich producer Daniel Sadek. His wildest dream? To see his entire luxury automobile collection used in a racing film. He even paid for the making of "Redline" out of his own pocket. So what does 26 million dollars buy you in today's film market? Apparently a smorgasbord of awful.

For kicks, a group of millionaires (Eddie Griffin, Angus Macfayden, and Tim Matheson) gather together to bet on illegal races using their collection of exotic cars. Natasha (Nadia Bjorlin) is a singer with a racing past who unexpectedly gets caught up in this pastime and she wants out. With the help of Iraq vet Carlos (Nathan Phillips, "Wolf Creek"), Natasha attempts to tamper with the race results to best exact revenge on one of the tycoons who has threatened her family.

"Redline" is perhaps the most obvious vanity film of the last decade. Even the worst projects from Hollywood's A-list couldn't compare with the ballooned ego of this movie. It's a motion picture literally built around the display of fancy cars, with minimal attention to plot or performance. Sure, the same could be said of its forefather, 2001's "Fast and the Furious," but even that piece of junk had some production value. "Redline" is a direct-to-knucklehead release that refuses to bow out gracefully.

HERE IS THE SUMMARY FOR THE MOVIE THE INCREDIBLES FROM IMDB

Mr. Incredible is a superhero; or he used to be, until a surge of lawsuits against superheroes submitted by the people they've saved forced the government to hide them in witness protection programs so they could lead normal, anonymous lives. Now known exclusively by his secret identity, Bob Parr, he lives with his wife Helen, formerly Elastigirl, and their three children Violet, Dash, and Jack Jack. He works as an insurance claims specialist, and he's fed up with his pushy boss and his immoral profession, but his wife's worked too hard to build a normal life for her family to abide his nostalgia for heroism. When Mr. Incredible's offered the chance to play the role of hero again by a mysterious informant, he jumps at the opportunity, but when it turns out to be a trap set by an old nemesis he had a hand in corrupting, the whole family must reveal themselves to save Mr. Incredible and countless innocents. Written by Michael Loughrin

Fifteen years ago, superheroes walked the streets of Metroville, performing acts of great heroism and inspiring many to follow their example. But a string of lawsuits by disgruntled people they'd helped lead to political and public outcry, and the Supers were forced into retirement and government-funded anonymity. Bob Parr used to be Mr. Incredible, one of the greatest and strongest Supers; now, he lives a mundane life as a suburban insurance agent. Although his wife Helen (formerly Elastigirl) has moved on and is more concerned with raising their children Dashiell (who is super-fast and super-confident), Violet (who can turn invisible - and is super-shy) and baby Jack-Jack than battling evil, Bob still yearns for the good old days - and his chance comes when he is approached by a shadowy government organization and asked to join their numbers. But all is not as it seems, and Bob will find himself trapped by Syndrome, an embittered enemy who in his youth once idolized Mr. Incredible - and only his family will be able to save him now... Written by Scott Nisbet

Metroville was once flooded with superheroes saving the day. One of the greatest was Mr. Incredible, who found himself annoyed by the young chatterbox fanatic of his, Buddy Pine, who referred to himself as 'Incrediboy.' As Mr. Incredible fought crime, he met another legendary hero, Elastigirl and the two superheroes wed. shortly afterward, a string of lawsuits banned superheroes from ever saving the day again! 15 years later, Mr. Incredible, now known as Bob Parr is itching to become a superhero again. Mrs. Incredible, or Helen Parr, is trying to persuade him not to. Their son, Dash, who has the ability to run extremely quickly, wants to try out for sports, but he can't because of his powers being revealed. Violet, the Parr's daughter, wants to be normal and fit in as a teen. And the baby, Jack-Jack is only itching for a good time. Then, Bob hears about a top secret assignment regarding a powerful machine attacking Nomanisan Island. Thinking this is his way to become a superhero again, Bob accepts and yet again becomes Mr. Incredible...however, this anonymous villain has a grudge... Written by theoneandonlyultiman

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE THE INCREDIBLES FROM DVDTALK

The Movie

On the surface, The Incredibles is a superhero movie, but in truth, it's a movie about superheroes. It's a small difference, but an important one. Sure, there are big superhero battles, villains and the usual comic-book trappings, but those are just part of the story. The more important aspects are the family interaction, the struggles of being different and being true to one's self. That may sound like an afterschool special, but in the hands of the Pixar storytellers, they are the hallmarks of a film classic.

The plot follows the life of Bob Parr ("Coach"'s Craig T. Nelson), an insurance company worker, who at one point was Mr. Incredible, a super-strong defender of innocent people. Then a few lawsuits started a crackdown on superheroes, forcing him into seclusion, so he married a fellow hero, Helen, a.k.a. Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), and settled into suburban life. Now, he's going through a super-midlife crisis, missing his days as someone special; someone who made a difference. While his wife has adjusted to being a mom swimmingly, Bob is bored and frustrated, much like his kids, Dash and Violet, who don't understand why they have to keep their own powers secret.

With his friend Lucius (Samuel L. Jackson), who was once the icy hero Frozone, Bob tries to keep his skill sharp, listening to the police scanner and responding first. His actions draw the attention of a shadowy operative who has an offer Bob can't refuse, or rather wouldn't want to. He's also drawn the attention of someone from his past who isn't on friendly terms. Bob might be in over his head, and his family are the only ones that can help him. The final hour of the film is almost non-stop action, with some truly incredible and well-choreographed set pieces that are thrilling and exciting.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE MR AND MRS SMITH FROM DVDTALK

The Movie:

"Mr. and Mrs. Smith", while not flawless (and not "Grosse Pointe Blank"), is a feature that works well despite the realization as the credits roll that there's not a great deal to it. Of course, everyone knows by now that stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are a couple, the mere fact of which has somehow managed to be covered in every single edition of every single tabloid in every single country. The film, from "Bourne Identity" director Doug Liman, stars Pitt and Jolie as Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a suburban couple who lives in a large, beautiful and ultra-modern house on a quiet street. The two met cute and got married, despite keeping a rather large secret from one another - that both are actually assassins who are working for rival organizations. The marriage has obviously cooled over the years, and now discussions over decorations and minor dinner changes are the only thing keeping things from falling into uncomfortable silences. Things get nasty, however, when the two are sent in on the same job - an operative (Adam Brody, from "The O.C.") and find that their cover has been blown by the person they'd have least expected. From there, "Smith" turns into a more violent "War of the Roses" as the two, despite still being together, wage war on each other in their suburban estate. However, when it becomes clear that their bosses want them eliminated, they realize they have to turn to each other.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE OCEANS 13 FROM DVDTALK

The last time we encountered the guys and gals of the "Ocean" films they were stuck in a hepcat paralysis. 2004's "Ocean's Twelve" wasn't a disastrous picture, but it was a cataclysmic mistake in execution, stripping away the friendly magnetism of "Ocean's Eleven" to pursue an insidery tone that felt exclusionary and humorless. From the introductory ribbons of colors backing the main titles, it's obvious "Ocean's Thirteen" is here to say "I'm sorry" to anyone who was shut out of the merriment last time around.

Willie Bank (Al Pacino) is a ruthless Vegas casino owner bent on buying up the strip. When Bank screws over business partner Rueben Tishkoff (Elliot Gould), Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and his boys (including Brad Pitt and Matt Damon) are herded in to even the score for the ailing old-school casino czar. Using careful planning and research, the team hopes to disrupt the grand opening of Bank's latest gambling palace. But, as with any revenge scheme, not everything goes smoothly.

"Ocean's Thirteen" won't tax your senses. Steven Soderbergh's latest caper isn't intended to wow with complexity or depth; it's more a ride down the scenic cinematic highway with the top down and the music blasting. It plays it safe, perhaps too safe for more demanding attention spans, but it does so with a jubilant charisma and enough neon-infused spirit to make it impossible to hate.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE SHOOTER FROM DVDTALK

The Movie

It'd be far too easy to dismiss Antoine Fuqua's Shooter as mindless multiplex mayhem. Disguised as a gory B-movie light on coherent plot and heavy on bad-ass action, there's actually something a bit more subversive at work in this pseudo-Death Wish for the Dubya administration. You have to wonder just how many popcorn-munchers caught on to the not-so-thinly-veiled caricatures of America's governmental elite. It's a tactic (not having read Washington Post film critic Stephen Hunter's novel upon which Fuqua's film is based, adapted here by Jonathan Lemkin, it's hard to know just how much politically charged material already existed) that elevates and makes more timely a film that would otherwise be nothing more than a straight-to-video snooze.

When a devastating hit knocks a professional football legend and quarterback Cap Rooney (Denis Quaid) out of the game, a young, unknown third-stringer is called in to replace him. Having ridden the bench for years because of a string of bad luck stories and perhaps insufficient character, Willie Beaman (Jamie Foxx) seizes what may be his last chance, and lights up the field with a raw display of athletic prowess. His stunning performance over several games is so outstanding and fresh it seems to augur a new era in the history of this Miami franchise, and forces aging coach Tony D'Amato (Al Pacino) to reevaluate his time-tested values and strategies and begin to confront the fact that the game, as well as post-modern life may be passing him by. Adding to the pressure on D'Amato to win at any cost is the aggressive young President/Co-owner of the team, Christina Pagniacci (Cameron Diaz), now coming into her own after her father's death. Christina's driving desire to prove herself in a male dominated world is intensified by her focus on the marketing and business of football, in which all coaches and players are merely properties. HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE ANY GIVEN SUNDAY FROM DVDTALK

Oliver Stone never does anything by half. In each of his films, from Platoon to Wall Street, JFK to Nixon, he always seeks to make THE definitive movie on any given topic. Even though his main focus has been on the Viet Nam war, its aftermath, and the culture that grew up around it, his other films have been equally grandiose. That's why it's no surprise that his football epic, Any Given Sunday includes everything but the kitchen sink. His other recent off-topic film, U-Turn, sought to include every twist-and-turn available to films noir in the Detour vein, and Any Given Sunday doesn't skip anything either. On-field drama, back-room business deals, medical shenanigans, locker room trash-talking, media braggery, sexual tomfoolery, coke snorting, and just about everything else (except, perhaps, a steroid scandal) is pulled out to define football as, predictably, the gladiatorial sport of our times (or rather, as one player puts it while watching Charlton Heston in Ben Hur, those were the gladiators of THEIR time).

Any Given Sunday, which follows a difficult half-season for the fictional Miami Sharks, reminded me of an overstuffed meatball hero: full of balls, a lot of fun, but in the end, maybe a little too much meat and not enough nutrition. From the opening shot (a huge close-up of a football shot like a 2001 monolith), Stone is reverent of the game itself and what he perceives as the ideals of team play, of glory, of awe in the physical achievements of other men. He reins in his visual style for most of the movie (well, reined in for Stone) so that we can really appreciate the movement of the players and the bone-crunching hits they take. The games are very cinematic; He approaches the opening moments like it's D-Day and he's Steven Spielberg. When a player more used to warming the bench steps onto the field for the first time the disorientation he feels is palpable. You can tell that he never expected the field to feel so different during game-time.

Director Davis Guggenheim eloquently weaves the science of global warming with Mr. Gore's personal history and lifelong commitment to reversing the effects of global climate change. A longtime advocate for the environment, Gore presents a wide array of facts and information in a thoughtful and compelling way. "Al Gore strips his presentations of politics, laying out the facts for the audience to draw their own conclusions in a charming, funny and engaging style, and by the end has everyone on the edge of their seats, gripped by his haunting message," said Guggenheim. An Inconvenient Truth is not a story of despair but rather a rallying cry to protect the one earth we all share. "It is now clear that we face a deepening global climate crisis that requires us to act boldly, quickly, and wisely," said Gore. Written by Plantation Productions

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE INCONVENIENT TRUTH FROM DVDTALK

The Movie

To paint An Inconvenient Truth as anything less than what it is -- a near clarion call to action -- would be to slight former Vice President of the United States Al Gore's seemingly indefatigable need to alert everyone within earshot of his voice about the mounting dangers of global warming. Why this film, directed by Davis Guggenheim, succeeds where so many others have fallen short, is that Gore never strikes the viewer as anything other than rational, collected and impassioned. He's not alarmist, he's not half-crazed about melting glaciers or raging forest fires -- he's merely sad and determined, armed with facts and figures and set upon making some sort of positive impact.

With a relentless torrent of scientific data at his fingertips (and a "Futurama" clip or two), broken down into easily digestible and understood chunks, Gore lays out the past, present and downright harrowing future of our globe, as it continues to reel from the effects of our callous hyper-consumption. One chilling statistic after another (often backed up with stunning photographic evidence) piles up until you're left, shaken and unnerved, as the credits roll, listing several ways you yourself can engage in making a difference.

Woven into the fabric of An Inconvenient Truth is an informal biography of Gore himself, following his journey from the family farm in Tennessee to the halls of power in Washington to his globe-trotting adventures as an eco-missionary. These interludes punctuate his presentation, offering respite from the dizzying amount of information, but also deftly providing insight into why he pursues this avocation so devotedly. It's a trick that could've very well failed, dragging down the otherwise essential message of An Inconvenient Truth, but Guggenheim seamlessly integrates this necessary information into his overall narrative.

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE SHAUN OF THE DEAD FROM DVDTALK

The Movie: After the series of horror films I've seen in the last few years ("Dawn of the Dead", etc), it's refreshing to see a horror parody that not only works, but works on other levels. The film focuses on Shaun (Simon Pegg), an average British guy who spends his time either in the pub or working in an electronics store with teenage co-workers. However, his girlfriend, Liz (Kate Ashfield), is fed up with the nights hanging out in the pub with Shaun's flat-mate/best friend, Ed (Nick Frost) and wants something new. When Shaun forgets to make a dinner reservation that would celebrate their anniversary, Liz calls the whole relationship off. Meanwhile, there are reports on the TV in the background of strange goings-on, which go completely ignored by our main characters. Shaun, so desensitized to his existence, travels the same route he does every morning, completely oblivious to things like the ominous stain on the freezer at the grocery store, or the puddle below it that he nearly slips on. Even when confronted with a couple of zombies, Shaun and his friends are really none the wiser. But, as the situation proceeds to get worse, the two finally realize that there's some seriously weird events going on outside. The plan: Ed and Shaun will try and go to their car, drive to Shaun's mother's house, get her, drive to his now ex-girlfriend's house and get her (and end up taking her flat-mates along), then they'll all go to the pub and have a pint while they wait for things to calm down outside. As the group tries to make their way past the walking dead that are on patrol throughout the neighborhoods, Shaun has a wake-up call, and starts to become a (moderately) good leader on what will become known as "Z-Day" (Zombie Day).

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE FROM DVDTALK

One thing about this film is for sure, the title stinks. I'm sure it sounds elegant on the cover of the novel this picture is based on, but slap it on the screen, and you're begging people to laugh. Having now seen the film, perhaps a better title would've been, "Hot Topic: The Movie."

Vivian (Agnes Bruckner, "Venom") is young woman living with her relatives in Romania. During the day the innocent girl bides her time working in a chocolate shop, but at night, she reveals herself to be a crucial member of a pack of werewolves. The leader, Gabriel (Olivier Martinez, "Unfaithful"), is ready to marry again, and all signs point to Vivian to be the new bride. Plans changer, however, when an American artist, Aiden (Hugh Dancy, "King Arthur"), takes a shine to Vivian, capturing her heart, but enraging her protective and sinister family of werewolves, or "loup-garou."

First and foremost, "Blood" is harmless entertainment. Outside of the complete and utter bastardization of Annette Curtis Klause's original story, the film plays unexpectedly quietly and with occasional dreamlike elegance if you squint hard enough. Director Katja von Garnier brings an almost sensual quality to the screenplay, and her fascination with the movement of wolves stands out as an odd highlight of the picture.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE FIREHOUSE DOG FROM DVDTALK

"Firehouse Dog" is a mess, but it's a good-natured mess. It's about a boy and his dog, and also about firefighters, and so I don't see how it's possible not to have warm feelings toward it. Kids? Dogs? Heroes? This movie was custom-made to make my mom cry. It's part feel-good family romp, part Hollywood satire, part kids-save-the-day mystery. Like I said, it's a mess. It has too many dog farts, and by "too many," I mean "more than zero." It also has the dog taking a dump in the stew -- BUT AT LEAST NO ONE SUBSEQUENTLY EATS THE STEW. That's a small victory, but nowadays, with family films as poop-centric as they are, you take all the victories you can get. So yeah, big jumbled mess of a film with way too many things going on, and it's far too long for a kid flick. And yet I'm sort of casually recommending it, because a) it's not boring, b) it's sometimes kind of funny, and c) it's heartwarming. Too many family films are idiotic and pointless and confuse chaos with comedy. "Firehouse Dog" is calm and assured. It doesn't dance around like a monkey and honk its big clown nose to try to convince you to like it. It just does its thing, smoothly and somewhat intelligently, and lets you decide.

Tom Dobbs, comedic host of a political talk show - a la Bill Maher and Jon Stewart - runs for President of the US as an independent candidate who, after an issues-oriented campaign and an explosive performance in the final debate, gets just enough votes to win. Trouble is he owes his victory to a computer glitch in the national touch-screen voting system marketed by Delacroy, a private company with a rising stock price. To protect their fortune, Delacroy executives want to keep the glitch a secret, but one programmer, Eleanor Green, wants Dobbs to know the truth. Can she get to him? Written by {jhailey@hotmail.com}

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE MAN OF THE YEAR FROM DVDTALK

The Movie There's a simple fact of film criticism which can be very, very hard to follow: One can only review the film as it is presented. Many critics, myself included, are tempted to criticize movies for what they're aren't, or for what they could have been. (Gene Siskel was often guilty of this.) Keeping this in mind, how does one judge a film which was mis-represented by its advertising? The critic can't blame the filmmakers for this and can only look at the film in question. Thus is the case with Barry Levinson's Man of the Year. Robin Williams stars in Man of the Year as Tom Dobbs, a Jon Stewart-esque host of a talk show which mixes political and comic overtones. One night, an audience member asks Tom why he doesn't run for president. When Tom mentions this on his show, the e-mails pour in and he begins to take the idea seriously, much to the chagrin of his manager, Jack Menken (Christopher Walken), and his head writer, Eddie Langston (Lewis Black). Given the clear support that he's getting and the feedback from viewers who are tired of the political parties, Tom decides to throw his hat in the ring. Meanwhile, a computer firm called Delacroy has received a contract to supply computerized voting booths to every precinct in the country. Employee Eleanor Green (Laura Linney) finds a glitch in the system which makes the program unreliable. She takes this to company president Hemmings (Rick Roberts), who assures her that it will be taken care of.

HERE IS A REVIEW FOR THE MOVIE LORDS OF DOGTOWN FROM DVDTALK.

The movie

The trouble with remakes is that the compulsion to compare them to the original is so strong. In the case of a remake that tackles a relatively recent film, it's even more difficult to avoid the comparison. Lords of Dogtown is such a film: though there's no previous feature film on the topic, it's very much a remake of the 2001 documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys. Chronicling the rise (and sometimes fall) of a group of young toughs in Venice, California who set the skateboarding world on fire with their talent as part of the Zephyr team, Lords of Dogtown follows the trajectory of Dogtown and Z-Boys pretty much to the letter. As to whether you like the results or not, it's down to whether you like seeing this slice of skateboarding history straight-up or acted out.

I'll be up-front and say that while I found Lords of Dogtown to be reasonably entertaining, I don't think it offers anything that Dogtown and Z-Boys doesn't also offer more effectively. Keep in mind that I liked Dogtown and Z-Boys quite a bit, of course; the documentary wasn't perfect, but it was quite compelling and had a very distinctive style, so that it's a lot more memorable than, I think, Lords of Downtown will be.

HERE IS THE SUMMARY FOR THE MOVIE MALLRATS FROM IMDB

Brodie Bruce, a Sega and comic book obsessed college student, and his best friend, TS Quint, are both dumped by their girlfriends on the same day, and to deal with their loss, they both go to the local mall. Along the way, they meet up with some friends, including Willam, a guy who stares at Magic Eye pictures, desprately trying to see the hidden image; Gwen, one of TS's ex-girlfriends; and Jay & Silent Bob, of Clerks fame. Eventually, they decide to try and win back their significant others, and take care of their respective nemesises (TS's girlfriend's father, and a store clerk who hates the two for not having any shopping agenda). Written by MTRodaba2468

Mallrats gives us a viewing of a day in the life for two teenagers, T.S. and Brodie, as they wander around all day in a local mall while the girls who recently dumped them do the same. The two guys encounter characters like Jay, Silent Bob, 15-year old sex novel author Trish the Dish, 3-D visionally challenged Willam (the guy just wants to see the sailboat!) and many others. T.S. and Brodie have decided that they will attempt to win back the hearts of their ex-girlfriends before scumbags like Brodie's arch nemesis Shannon Hamilton get to have sex with them in very uncomfortable places, while Jay and Silent Bob attempt to wreck one of their ex-girlfriend's father's game show in the meantime. Written by Zack H.

T.S. and Brodie are two suburban high-school friends, both of whom are dumped by their respective girlfriends on the same day. They then go to the local mall to commiserate and hang out, as they often do. Meeting up with punk troublemakers Jay and Silent Bob (played by director Kevin Smith), they collectively hatch a plan to wreak mall havoc and win their loves back. Smith's film is filled with sophomoric and scatological humor, hip 'alternative' music, and pop cultural icons ranging from video games and film (Star Wars and Batman) to comics (including Stan 'The Man' Lee, as himself). Written by Tad Dibbern {DIBBERN_D@a1.mscf.upenn.edu}

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE MALLRATS FROM DVDTALK

The Movie

Following the mega-success that was the low-budget indie film Clerks, Kevin Smith could have likely done just about any film he wanted to as long as the characters swore liberally. What he wanted to do was write and direct a movie about a guy who hangs around in a mall. Scratch that...a comic-book geek who hangs around in a mall. He also wanted to bring back his cult slacker heroes, Jay and Silent Bob.

Unfortunately, what Smith wanted to do didn't jive with what audiences wanted to see, and a black mark was placed on his record for all to see. He would rebound with the classic Chasing Amy, the sacre-delicious Dogma and the rest of his empire, but Mallrats will, in most film-goers' eyes, forever be his Heaven's Gate.

In your humble reviewer's opinion, it's an unfair stance that is taken against Smith's sophomore film, mainly because it wasn't Clerks. Instead of going to the well again, Smith took his gift for on-screen gab and unleashed it on the teen comedy genre. The film is essentially the story of T.S. (Jeremy London, "Party of Five"), a moronic student with the vocabulary of Noam Chomsky, who messed things up with his girlfriend Brandi (Claire Forlani, Meet Joe Black) and her insane father (Michael Rooker, Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer). The tale is told during a day spent palling around with his slovenly friend Brodie (Jason Lee, "My Name is Earl") at Brodie's home away from home: the mall. Brodie has lady troubles of his own, having been dumped by Rene (Shannon Doherty, "Charmed").

HERE IS A REVIEW OF THE MOVIE ACCEPTED FROM DVD TALK

Background: College means different things to different people. For some, it means getting a better job while for others it means an extension of their partying days on their parent's dime. Having spent a considerable amount of time in institutions (of higher learning, smarty!), I've met all the stereotypes you see in movies and television shows; typically a mixture of several real personalities though many I've met based their personas in characters they saw in popular culture media outings but I'll pass on deciphering which came first (chicken and the egg discussions are best suited for another format). The popularity of movies based on the so-called college experience runs pretty high though, especially with a certain male demographic that are willing to overlook gaping plot holes, poor acting, and all the issues associated with the genre, with the rare title proving worthy of your time & money. Today's review is on a movie released by the "studio that brought you American Pie, a rough little gem called Accepted, that sugarcoats many of the usual standards of the format, almost to the point of absurdity.

Movie: Accepted is the story of Bartleby Gaines (Justin Long); a high school senior that engages in various criminal enterprises in order to fund his various monetary needs. As one of the go to guys about town, a hustler in the purest form of the word, he sails through life on a combination of playing the odds, figuring out the loopholes, and catering to the baser elements in life. In reality, he'd either end up a pimp, a porn producer, or dead in a ditch, or all three depending on his run of luck holding out. Well, his clueless parents kind of expect him to go to college, even while realizing that their youngest daughter is the one with all the brains in the family. They haven't really paid much attention to him but they have to keep up with the neighbors so they figure Bartleby will do what any of his peers worth a spit will do and get an education unlike the previous four years in high school. The catch is that Bartleby's talents for lying and scamming have left the colleges he's applied for somewhat unimpressed so all he has for his admittedly limited efforts are a bunch of rejection letters from even the lamest of schools.

This was as risqu as the movie got, sadly enough.

On a lark to keep the old man off his back, Bartleby uses a friend's acceptance letter to a nearby college as the template for making up a similar school but in this day and age, he has to invent a website for the parents to visit. He employs a nerdy friend of his Sherman Schrader (Jonah Hill); a guy that combines John Lovitz's character from The Critic with Animal House's Flounder, and a significant amount of brains and cowardice, to work one up for him in record time using general platitudes and heavy borrowing from the school he's going to, Harmon School of Technology; a relatively exclusive school. This convinces his parents just enough to give Bartleby his first semester's check for ten grand, but also opens up a can of worms that I'll get to. Dad still wants to meet the dean of the college and Bartleby is too much of a loser to cut his losses and fess up so he and a group of his friends rent a broken down old mental hospital and start to clean it up, hiring a burnout professor turned shoe salesman to play the role (Lewis Black in another scene stealing role).

Well, each of the group tell their parents the same thing; they are going to South Harmon, the "sister school of prestigious Harmon". Bartleby's parents securely out of the picture for the moment, the following day has hundreds of other losers showing up to start their education, having been accepted by the website that defaulted to letting anyone who applied into the program. Each time Bartleby is confronted with the prospect of jail or a mob that would tear him apart for scamming them, he builds further onto the lie, even misleading the woman he loves into dropping out of the real college and joining his institution. The movie's flimsiest of premises reminds one of the lies that Bartleby tells to get through life, passable on first glance but upon the slightest bit of inquiry falling apart.

The women were under utilized.

So, not having a curriculum, a teaching staff, most modern facilities required by a college, the gimmick is how to stay afloat and one step ahead of all those who would shut him down; particularly in the form of the real Harmon authorities once they stumble onto the scam almost by accident. All the needed elements of a college comedy are present in liberal amounts; a rival fraternity full of stuffed shirts, the eventual arrival of the police, and a wide variety of jokes that range from sight gags to slapstick humor as the leads are put through the generic paces by freshmen director Steve Pink (the writer of Gross Point Blank, High Fidelity, and a few other choice comedies). Like Bartleby's lies, the movie works best if you're extremely forgiving of the paper thin material and can accept that it was purposely watered down to obtain a PG-13 rating (even bleeping to keep from losing it to an R).

Adam got all the ladies in the movie.

It was well meaning enough and should have gone the direct to video route given how weak so much of the material was but the included trailer and credentials of the producers were enough for a minor success in theatres. My biggest problem outside of the writing (and largely weak acting) was how unsympathetic the characters were, especially Justin Long as Bartleby. If embracing a snake that would sell you down the river for momentary gain works for you, he'll be right up your alley but his attitude of being smarter then everyone and confidence in his ability to cheat his way out of any situation (regardless of the cost to those around him) grated on my nerves more than a little. In the end, he wasn't trying to do the right thing (like most morality plays, this is the only way to redeem the character) but still trying to cheat his way out of the consequences with a series of rationalizations that defied logic. There were numerous goofs, plot holes, and assorted problems with the movie that made me initially think it was self financed on a shoe string budget, using relative unknowns and by calling in favors. Still, it had just enough going for it that I think fans of the genre, if totally wasted and/or drunk, might consider it as a mid week Rent It when all the better movies (and we're talking hundreds and hundreds of thematically similar titles) have all left the local Blockbuster.

Accepted, then, was acceptable to the chief demographic it catered to; white males under 18 that possess the kind of power fantasy that lets them think they can beat the system by luck and perseverance rather then applying hard work and talent. Sadly enough, the DVD extras were better then the movie itself, always a bad sign for this reviewer but at least enough to broaden the appeal to the kind of hardcore movie buff that watches (and listens) to such features. Check it out if you fall into said demographic but don't expect a whole lot or you're going to be disappointed at how watered down a good idea this could have been.

This was the curriculum board.

Picture: Accepted was presented in the same 2.35:1 ratio anamorphic widescreen offering it was shot in by director Steve Pink. As a recently released flick, it looked pretty sharp with solid fleshtones, decent lighting, and only minor issues in regards to edge enhancement or compression artifacts. If you watch it sober and pay attention, you'll find scores of technical errors like mikes slipping into view, continuity errors, and other issues that some people care about. It looked pretty good overall and this was not one of the areas in need of repair.

Sound: The audio was presented with a choice of either English, French or Spanish in a 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround with optional subtitles in each of those languages. I listened to the English language track and found there to be relatively little separation between the channels except for the music and the dynamic range was consistent with a new release on a major label as a budget title. By and large, the audio was nothing special but also didn't get in the way of the movie.

Extras: The selection of extras was actually pretty solid this time, another case where the extras clearly outshined the main feature. They started off with an 11 minute feature called Adam's Accepted Chronicles where the actor for one of the lead characters, a spaz named Glen (Adam Herschman), is allowed to provide a mockumentary of his role with the help of some of the others in the movie. Had the movie shown as much creativity and humor, I'd have loved it so it's sad that secondary features were where the talents went this time. The same could be said for the 10 minute long Reject Rejection: The Making of Accepted feature where the cast and crew goofed around a lot. This was followed by a self guided tour of the campus that is mostly a selection of short clips of the making of the movie focused on those areas. That led into two music videos; Hangin on the Half Pipe, and Keepin' Your Head Up by The Ringers; the former a skateboarder bit and the latter a bunch of bits from the movie. Next up was a director's audio commentary with director Steve Pink and actors Justin Long, Lewis Black, Jonah Hill, and Adam Herschman. I listened to it while writing this review and found it to have more of interest to me but I wished that some of the creativity and energy going into it was applied on the movie instead. There were then 13 minutes of deleted scenes of various merit (chopped for a reason in most cases), an 8 minute gag reel presented by Volkswagon (don't ask), a section of movie music MP3's, and a short easter Egg at the bottom right hand corner for an extended version of the hazing incident on the college green with Jonah, Justin, and Blake Lively.

Final Thoughts: Accepted wasn't the worst movie about college that I've ever seen but it was far from the best too. The acting was on par with any of the aforementioned American Pie movies and the production values were okay for a lower budget movie with third tier actors. The limitations of catering to a PG-13 audience aside, the whole movie seemed to bounce between fair, decent, and weak moments with far too many provided on the lower end of the scale. If you set your sights low enough, Accepted might prove to be worth a viewing or two, especially for the extras, but I didn't think it would have been taken off academic probation with anything higher than a C- (at best) given the overall picture.
